I remember seeing a tweet or reddit post about how a new mom was furious that her mother kissed her new born baby. Unknowingly, I thought that was insane and super over protective. Reading the responses I quickly learned why, and was so surprised I had no idea how dangerous it is to give a new born a kiss. I wish it was common knowledge so people just would not do this or push try it when parents tell you no.

Glad that people educated you and cleared you of your ignorance. It’s not just bad for newborns by the way, children aren’t born with bacteria in their mouth that causes caries, it’s adults that give it to them via kissing them on the mouth or sharing utensils. Yeah, herpes can be deadly to newborns. Most hospitals are supposed to do a preventative test just to make sure newborns don't have it, but since this probably happened a few days after Breelynn was released from the hospital, her initial test right after birth probably showed as negative, and she only got the deadly herpes virus after being kissed a couple of days after being at home, by a carrier who didn't know any better, and kissed her on the mouth for whatever reason(I just don't understand why you would kiss someone else's child on the mouth, or at all really, it's just very odd to me...)

Actually for adults in a monogamous relationship kissing can potentially help expose each other's immune systems to the same pathogens & help build immunity......But infants & particularly delicate newborns are a different story due to their immune systems not being fully developed yet.Something mild for a older kid/adult can potentially be serious for babies under a year.

I'm not a nurse and I've argued with so many people who say that's what immune systems are for. A baby's immune system has to build up first. This is why other countries limit contact with the baby and mother for a whole month, the whole point is to limit risk of infection until the baby's system and bolster some.

@MidnightSociety75 Yup. People are so disappointingly ignorant about it anyway. Thinking that if they don't have a cold sore, it's impossible to carry HSV1 or HSV2. Doctors also don't help because they never advise people to get tested as they already know that the majority of the world population has it and as an adult its not typically life threatening yet, since there is so much stigma they would rather have people live in ignorance so it doesn't affect their mental health
@pippadawg703710 ай бұрын
@@MidnightSociety75 Most babies contract herpes simplex encephalitis from the mother via the birth canal, not from a stranger and not through a kiss. Luckily the modern miracle of cesarian section spares the baby contact with germs and viruses that may be present in the mother's birth canal. Exposure to the breast/nipple and consuming human milk poses a risk the baby will contract herpes encephalitis as well. Bottles can be sterilized in the dishwasher, the breast can't. Also commercial formula is pasteurized and breastmilk is not. Even if the risk is small, the sacrifice is small too. You can't be too careful.. Although yes, "they'll be people who won't listen" and mothers will no doubt recklessly continue to kiss her baby, nurse it at her breast and even most dangerous of all -give birth vaginally.

Very young babies are fragile and really nobody but the parents and pediatrician should be handling them extensively. Once they grow a bit, get a few of their vaccines, and more exposure to the environment it's less of an issue but too many people have boundary issues and a feeling of entitlement about babies. What always blows me away and makes me cry when watching these interviews, is how much it contrasts with broader society. Society devalues disabled lives, sees us as “unproductive”, but you can always see in these interviews, how the truth is really the opposite. The disabled family members are the most powerful people in the room. They’re the heart, and the love they generate in the people around them is so pure and unconditional. It shows how backwards society is. The only productivity I strive for is producing a world where everyone is valued and worthy.

the fact that he goes out of his way to connect with and befriend these children is incredibly touching, yet heart-wrenching to me. my whole life, I was treated differently for my mental disabilities, especially by those older than me. I never could truly connect with an adult or have an older figure I looked up to, and I would constantly be undermined/talked down to. even as a teenager, I faced constant belittling and underestimation from those around me, and it's so wonderful to see this man treat these disabled children as humans equal to him. truly beautiful and inspiring, while also heartbreaking. i wish more people treated me like this as a child. props to the mother, also. she's so patient and understanding of the girls means of communication and expressing herself. she seems so caring and supportive of her daughters disabilities, and not only that, but she's so affectionate and sweet!! more parents need to be able to empathize and communicate with their children like this, regardless of disability.

@flixtrue630010 ай бұрын
It’s not about kissing on the mouth. Anywhere on the body can make this happen. And an other fact: you don’t have to see the cold sore. It is already active in the body of the person before you see it so clearly. I have family in law that all have the Herpes virus, first 3 months no kissing at all, with or without active sores: and never on the mouth never ever! With sores I don’t want you around at all before 3 months. Other fact: if you or the dad has the virus and will give it to your newborn, it can become very sick as well, only the change of dying is less likely. After 3 months the baby will not be at that amount of risk anymore. Just be careful ❤ your child is your everything

If you are pregnant, your immune system is repressed and you aren't allowed most meds. I am asthmatic on top of things. I remember a relative decided to come and visit when they had flu and I was a couple of months pregnant. She gave it to me and I was very, very sick for about a month.

My boyfriend has cold sores occasionally and I will not let him kiss me, much less breathe on my face or in my ear. He's 77 and had Shingles when he was younger. I took the shots for it since I nearly died of Covid in '20 and didn't want to get anything else I could prevent since I have pre-existing conditions myself. I think this bit about not kissing babies-or even children with immune-compromised systems should be taught to youngsters, teens, and adults to keep them from making this mistake if alone with them.

Breelynn is so alert and seems to understand everything. I think she would really benefit from one of those computer visually communication boards thingamybobs. I don’t know what they are called. The ones that there is a computerised voice that is activated when she looks at a certain word/object. I think she’s a bright little bunny and would really enjoy having a conversation, saying I love you or being able to tell them if she’s in pain or feeling unwell.
