"You can't break what's already broken!" That's actually so sad. McGucket's story hit me hard when I first watched the show. The way he ruined his own life without even knowing it is heartbreaking. I'm glad he can be somewhat his old self again.

A few fun facts about this episode: - Months before Season 2 aired, Alex Hirsch created a fake screenshot of McGucket writing the journals, posted it anonymously, and then had it deleted while publicly complaining about leaks - The gibberish McGucket shouts at one point in his recorded memories is actually the phrase “BILL CIPHER TRIANGLE” run through a code that inverts the letters of the alphabet - The items that get sucked into the portal machine during the stinger can be seen falling out of a random portal in a Season 1 episode of Rick and Morty

@@maxmyhalchuk3506 *Big spoilers ahead* I wasn't around for it, so all I can say is what I've heard. From what I understand, prior to the fake leak, the leading theory for the author's identity was that Stan had a twin brother, which of course turned out to be correct. I've even heard that the fanbase being so on board with this theory is part of the reason why Alex made the leak. McGucket was also a popular suspect though, and when the fake leak came out it threw a lot of people off course before this episode (where the reveal McGucket wasn't the author, he just knew him).

24:10 You actually see Mcgucket making a triangle shape over his eye. Fun fact: If I remember correctly, the Gravity Falls team "leaked" a fake image of Young Mcgucket writting in a Journal and then deleted it to further inflate fan speculation. The twist in this episode is still great, and tragic, but it was an awesome attempt to misdirect the audience on a meta level XD

Alex posted on 4Chan images of the studios from a supposed tour: one was of Gideon holding the Journal in _Gideon Rises_ (to give it credibility, since that episode had not aired yet) and the other was the aforementioned fake image of McGucket writing the Journals. Once people took notice, he tweeted out "Fuming right now", then deleted the tweet.

He did it because people someone figured out the actual answer pretty early, and posted it as a theory online, and they wanted to control the narrative. @Axius27
@Axius27 21 күн бұрын
@@Raptor_Ren Speculating further, his son likely moved out to gravity falls after McGucket's mental health began to decline. It's likely that his madness prevented him from accepting any treatment, and now the son, who likely abandoned his life to help his father, can't afford to leave and is now trapped in the town. Yeah, if that speculation is true, then I kinda understand why McGucket and his son aren't on speaking terms. Or maybe the son just thinks that building a giant robot after McGucket's wife divorced him was completely out of line and he's not willing to forgive him for it. That's probably the simplest solution with the existing evidence :P
@andrewlance3898

Based on how young McGucket is at the start of the recording, his son was probably in single digits when McGucket started deteriorating. Some of his earliest memories would be seeing his father tearing out his hair and erasing every unpleasant experience from his memory. That stuff would traumatize you and leave you with a lingering fear of your own father.

24:51 In all fairness Alicia, helping someone in mental decline isn’t easy. For one this was likely happening over the course of years. Secondly it was likely the Son was just a child when this began. And lastly Mcgucket in spite of his mental decline is a highly competent person trying to avoid things so even if people encouraged him to seek help it would involve facing the things he was running from.

This is one of the key episodes of the series, and the one that solidified McGucket as one of my favourite characters. As for the ciphers there's actually 3 here: At the end of McGucket's memories, he speaks in tongues and makes a triangle with his fingers, he's actually speaking a code in atbash: "BILL CIPHER! TRIANGLE" Credits:"IGNORANCE IS BLISS, BUT BLISS IS BORING" AND MY FAVOURITE, the page cipher: "Gideon's tantrums" "Mispelled tatoos" "Shandra's rejection" "Society's views" "A fear of witches" "A life of regret" "THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT THEY TRY TO FORGET" And if you look at the members of the society, you can figure out what corresponds to each one based on what we know and can see about them. The Society of the Blind Eye is a great episode as it puts so many things into perspective. Not just for McGucket, but Gravity Falls itself. The reason why everyone acts so strange or dumb (and probably why Stan always gets so much business) is because the citizens are actively, and perhaps consistently, are given brain damage. The Gleeful family being no different, as the memories of Bud’s own wife is located within the storage. Which has….implications to say the least

After re-watching this episode and "Little Dipper," I came up with a theory that Bud has used the memory eraser on his wife multiple times. She had seen some traumatic things, including certain things Gideon got up to, and Bud erased the memories of them to try and keep her safe. However, while the memory of the actual event may have been gone, some of the trauma remained, as well as the knowledge that her husband erased something from her memory. As a result, she lives in a state of denial, refusing to acknowledge anything out of the ordinary, because doing so would mean getting her memory erased again.

Now that we know he was a Blind Eye, it was very fortunate or unfortunate that Gideon acted before Toby did. IMPORTANT FUN FACTS • After McGuckett points out how weird it is that he has a bandage on his beard, we actually see in his memories why it's like that. He got hurt and put a bandage on his face, and then just... forgot about it and the beard grew out from underneath the bandage. • At the end of this episode, Stan's pen, coffee mug, and notebook get sucked into a portal. What happened to them? Well, those exact same items can be seen coming *out* of a portal in "Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind", the tenth episode of the first season of Rick and Morty. The creators of both shows are friends, and this tiny crossover was planned out between them. • The last bit of "gibberish" that McGuckett says in his memories is "Yroo Xrksvi Girzmtov", while holding his fingers in a triangle shape around his eyes. This is a simple letter-swap; if you switch every letter for its opposite in the alphabet (a becomes z, b becomes y, etc.), it translates to "Bill Cipher Triangle".

1:50 - *“I'll let this intro play, while I eat my grapes.”* In the back half of the season, you may want to keep the intro playing every time. Apart from a couple of times when the intro gets cut down for time, there are also two instances where the intro actually changes. You'll know it when you see it. 3:42 - _"Queen of the Manatees?! And she's _*_so beautiful!"_* This is one of my favourite Mabel moments. Like the time she told Grenda that there would be no point putting on makeup, since Grenda is _already_ so beautiful, this shows what a wonderful human bean she is. She looks at the photo, and and her reaction is, "How could I ever hope to compete with _her?"_ Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, and clearly Mabel's eyes are overflowing with it. 4:01 - *“NO! It can't be! That has to be a misdirect.”* In fact, this episode _ended_ a prolonged misdirect perpetrated by Alex Hirsch and his co-creators on the fanbase. Towards the end of season 1, one of the fan theories gaining traction was very close to what Alex had planned for the series. In order to redirect the fandom (and troll them, the jerk), Alex orchestrated a faked "accidental" leak of a supposed animation cel from a upcoming episode. They drew a younger version of McGucket (though not the _actual_ younger version we see in this episode), without his permanent cast, revealing six fingers on his hand, writing in the journals with a quill. They put that fake image on the monitor of one of the editing bays, and took a snapshot of it through a doorway from the hall, making it look like a visitor to the studio had accidentally caught one of the future episodes being edited. To lend verisimilitude to this "leak", they also included an image from a _real_ upcoming episode, namely the season 1 finale. When the finale aired, and it really contained the "leaked" shot, that would make the _other_ shot immediately more believable. When this episode starts with the _appearance_ that the leak was real and McGucket is the author, that's them setting up the punchline of revealing the hoax they pulled on the fans. 24:07 - _"[speaking gibberish]"_ The subtitle _LIES!_ He isn't speaking "gibberish", he is speaking in _code_. YROO XRKSVI! GIRZMTOV! 24:12 - *“Oh my god! That's actually so heart-breaking!”* Sure, but what if Mabel _liked him better_ with a broken brain? _Then_ it would be perfectly fine - in fact, heart-warming - to erase his mind. You established that, last episode. BTW, Did you notice that the memories actually _explain_ why McGucket had a band-aid on his beard? He received the cast on his arm and the bandage on his face, when he got into an accident in town - but then he forgot all about it and never had the cast taken off, in the next 30 years, and his beard grew out underneath the bandage, carrying it along. This is the kind of attention to detail these guys put into their episodes: even a silly little visual gag that was originally meant to communicate "this guy isn't all there" gets a tragic backstory. 26:07 - [Mug, notepad, and pencil get sucked into the portal.] Remember when you were watching _Rick and Morty?_ In season 1, episode 10, "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind", when they're fleeing from the pursuing Ricks across a world of Shmoopidoopidoos, Rick shoots a whole series of portals to lay false trails… and one of them disgorges a question-mark mug, a black notepad and a yellow pencil!

Since we’re bringing up behind the scenes facts, the commentary revealed the Society of the Blind Eye and McGucket’s backstory were all created during season 2. They were not planned since season 1. I like when things are planned out since day 1, but I also can appreciate a creative team that can create new mythology on the fly and have it fit into the overarching narrative. As the commentary mentioned, people are willing to forgive minor inconsistencies here or there if the overall plotline is a strong narrative.

I loved this episode for so many reasons including the fact that I suspected all along that McGukett was the author who just went senile in his old age. Him being the assistant to the author was so close to my prediciton that I completely freaked out. He was just enough in the background that it wasn't obvious but at the same time I knew McGukett was showing up too many times to not be relevant. I know that crazy geniuses like that can exist in real life but McGukett was too smart, to crazy, and to reoccuring to not have a major backstory! This episode has such a good lesson that it is better to remember the bad things an learn from them than go denail crazy trying to forget. This was also an interesting twist on the trope that minor characters often don't notice what is going in a series but now we know there is a reason Gravity Fall's weidness isn't common knowledge and if you think about it the agents who were from OUTSIDE Gravity Falls did react to the zombies the way normal agents would react not being dumb or in denial. So even the way a lot of people in this town are not very bright could be because they have a lesser version of the brain damage that McGukett had. OH MY GOSH I always suspected that the 2 cops in this town were victims of the Soceity of the Blind Eye because as actual cops they probably would have been called to investigate several of the weird events in Gravity Falls thus they were blasted multiple times, thus there rediculousness may not be there fault. However, it just now occurred to me that Soos was probably a major victum of the blind eye as well! He doesn't seem as smart or as crazy as McGukett but he shows so many signs as being similar to McGukett just not as majorly. Soos is handy with fixing things as a repair man despite him have so many comedy moments making fun of him. It fits perfectly if Soos was "almost" as smart as McGukket but had the memory ray used on him "almost" as much as McGukket. Bill did say "you guys are a lot smarter than you look especially the fat one".

We are getting so close to my favorite episode. So we know that McGucket worked with the author and built several of the high tech devices in and around Gravity Falls. This episode does make you wonder if it isnt someone that was already introduced but no longer remembers doing it. That sixth finger is a little harder to cover up

The secret text at the end: "Gideon's Tantrums, Misspelled Tattoos, Chandra's Rejection, Society's Views, A fear of witches, a lifetime of regret. These are the things each tries to forget." Rather poetic, It's an explanation as to why the foremost members were members in the first place! As follows: Gideon's tantrums: Buck Gleeful maintains his happiness by experience Gideon's outbursts each as if they were the first time. Now that he'll remember them... Misspelled Tattoos: The Large Soul with Tattoos takes quite some pride in them, so I suppose it's understandable. Chandra's Rejection: Toby may well be started on the path to acceptance after this. Or not, considering he didn't choose so earlier, going for Erasure instead. Society's Views...Oh, Mr. Woodpecker. Understandable, in any case, but it seems a change may be ahead for the man, so there's that. A fear of witches: The Farmer Man ust have had a classic Gravity Falls Encounter at some point, and decided to skip therapy or processing entire. Poor man. And the last one is the one I consider the most Tragic: A lifetime of regret. When he was creating the society, It's creator wouldn't have wanted a villain at all! He likely found Blind Ivan when he was a young man with determination, goodness, etc! But the dark task took it's toll, over time I believe, until eventually Ivan had to remove the founder's memories himself. That was likely the moment he decided to remove his own regret. And what is a man doing a dark task with no regrets? A villain, with hints of the old him. "Maybe a little...But not anymore." An accurate if sad summary of events. Thank you for taking the time to read this take, have a good day! TLDR: Secret words were the Society's Sads.

8:06 is one of my favorite Wendy moments because she totally crossed the line but the look on her face really sells that "Oh, that was a really shitty thing to do." feeling. Usually, in a comedy, the joke would just be that she's randomly an asshole & doesn't care. 10:27 is also one of my favorites.

So, remember how it seemed like Bill Cipher didn't hold up his end of the deal in 2x4? I, and a lot of other fans, were confused about that for a hot minute. I read some articles about statements from Hirsch and the writers; it turns out that Bill intended his hint differently than implied. He wasn't talking about a hint to the password of the laptop; he meant a hint to get Dipper one step closer to the identity of the author and the general mysteries of GF. Busting the laptop open and making the manufacturer's label barely visible was the least helpful hint Bill could manage within the stipulations of their deal.

I like it when Characters, who at first was introduced to seemingly be nothing more than Side-Characters, becomes more significant as their respective Shows/Series goes on. Why was Gideon’s Father part of that Cult? Anyway, we’re getting really close now.

I think the best part about this episode was the buildup to it. Where fans actually thought McGucket was the author of the journals. So Alex Hirsch decided to make a fake screencap of the show and post it on 4Chan as if it were an actual leak of the show, purely just to misdirect the fans from the real twists.
