I also like how he shows both maturity (I feel like Season 1 Dipper would more easily give in to the ghost's temptations. Even if he agrees with him, he also knows he's too dangerous and unstable, especially with Mabel in the crossfire) and compassionate (his heart to heart with Pacifica). Some fun facts about this incredible episode: 1. Matt Braly, the creator of Amphibia and one of the main creative forces of the Gravity Falls team, was the director of "Northwest Mansion Mystery." He went on record stating that Pacifica was his favorite character to write for and came up with the best material for the season 2 episodes focused on her. He also won an Annie award in 2016 for Outstanding Achievement, Directing in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production for this episode in particular. 2. Although not a full redemption arc, Matt's writing for Pacifica gave her a brief but amazing opportunity to defy the one-dimensional, rich girl bully stereotype season 1 had seemingly set her on. Her brief signs of self-improvement and breaking with toxic influences of authority figures also became the foundation for one of the female main characters when he started creating Amphibia after the series ended. The only difference is that, while Gravity Falls only gave a small amount of time to show the beginnings of Pacifica's redemption and coming-of-age story, Amphibia was structured entirely around it's main character recognizing the toxic mindset she'd been stuck in and actively working to improve herself and the lives of those she touches. 3. The ship name between Dipper and Pacifica is most commonly known as "Dipcifica." The ship itself existed back in season 1, but there were few fans following it then and found themselves overshadowed by the far larger "Wendip" ship of the time. That instantly changed after this episode. Waves of fanart and stories centered around Dipper and Pacifica together began flooding the fan sites and continues to see a steady stream to this very day. Alex Hirsch hadn't factored a romantic pairing between these two into the show, but the outpouring of support by fans didn't go unnoticed. They left some clues in Journal 3, the comic series "Forgotten Legends," and recent "Book of Bill" and its ARG website that strongly implies they have an attraction to one another, but (in classic rom-com fashion) don't want to fully admit it. In essence, Dipcifica is the Lumity of the series but without the explicit confirmation from the creator. Regardless, their ship is by far the most healthy and natural one that came out of the fandom and the pair has become a foundational pillar in most of the great fan art and stories that explore events after the series. You can find the best Dipcifica pieces by asking for recommendations on one of the Gravity Falls subreddits. Just be ready to see a lot of people in the comments repeating "this is the way" like their pairing is some kind of sacred creed (even though it is). 4. the comic upon which you are referring to, is known as "Lost Legends" not "Forgotten Legends" upon which the ending of the first story functions as a confirmation that Pacifica is indeed into Dipper, and the fact that Mabel ships them also, there's another example of this ship being found, that is in the book "don't colour this book! It's cursed!" which is another 'canonish' book which shows, again, Mabel shipping the two and to be in her future plans as the matchmaker. and yet again, in the blacklight edition of journal 3, Mabel is shown to know about Dipper's crush on Pacifica, so yeah that's neat lol.

I love the way this episode shows how good the Pines twins are for Pacifica. Mabel's ability to accept Pacifica as she is opened Pacifica up to accepting others in turn. But Mabel could never make Pacifica truly reconsider her value in her family. That's where Dipper came in. While Mabel was easy on her, Dipper never relented in telling Pacifica how it was, and actually pushed her to change as a person. But he'd have never gotten that opportunity if Mabel hadn't softened her up first. It's a perfect balance!

Fun fact, Pacifica was originally intended to be a one-note rival character for Mabel in Season 1. Alex Hirsch and Co. were so surprised by Pacifica's popularity with the fandom, that he and his crew decided to actually explore her depth as a character and give her a little redemption arc in Season 2. Big kudos to Matt Braly, who directed this episode (And the Golf War episode as well). He's a big reason why Pacifica came so far. He's really good at writing complex and nuanced characters in the episodes he works on.

Not-so-fun fact: Pacifica wears red gloves to signify that her family has blood in their hands Blood that, according to the "Book of Bill", she still tries to wash off. Also the Ghost still haunts her dreams. According to the Book of Bill's accompanying website, if you type out the appropriate code (EDIT: It's "PLATINUMPAZ"), you find out that her parents grounded her after this, which is why she doesn't show up until the final few episodes of the series. And, yes, Bill Cipher did try to make a deal with her then, at her time of desperation but Pacifica turned him down. Gravity Falls is *DARK* man!

The worst she's ever done was have Stan pelted with tomatoes by the townspeople and makes fun of Mabel's sweater. Which is nothing compared to what Gideon and Robbie did. It isn't much of a trauma dumping either, the moment Dipper came back, she was genuinely happy to see him before he confronted her about the truth. She could've owned up and have no shame in lying to him... but she felt afraid, ashamed, trying to fix the misunderstanding up until her father rings the bell. I would say they did a lot to flesh out her character and redeem her than what they did with Robbie in the last episode, and up until that episode, Robbie was seen as an annoying jerk who you don't feel much or any sympathy for. Still, it would've been nice to see more of Pacifica fleshed out or more interaction with Dipper in later episodes (I would vastly prefer that over that one Road Trip episode later on...)

So a couple not so fun facts about this episode: 1. The pose that Dipper takes when he’s turned into wood is the same pose that the shapeshifter said would be the “last form he would ever take.” 2. The bell is likely some form of Pavlovian conditioning. Based on how Pacifica visibly winces when the bell is rung it’s likely that her dad used to use it as an indication for when they would beat her. To the point that now they only need to ring the bell for her to “get the message.”

Honestly despite all the gothic and hardcore imagery easily the most unsettling thing in the episode is the Bell pacificas dad uses to Control her. Cause the Implications are So Gross the fact that they probably conditioned Pacifica her entire life up to this point to never disobey the bell ringing making her more of a servant and even just a possession to her parents instead of a child. Also Fun fact Pacifica Was the inspiration for Sasha’s character in Amphibia, design, personality and character arcs are just Pacifica but much more fleshed out and focused on which is a real shame if they allowed like 1 more episode after this for Pacifica to like become a Part of the Mystery Gang it would’ve been a fun capper.

One of the best episodes that give us the best ship of the series. Dipcifica is just one of those ships you didn't realize you wanted/needed until you got it. Alex Hirsch even posted after S2E3 that now that things were settled with Wendy that they could now focus on Dipper/Pacifica. Speaking of which, such growth and understanding of her character. BTW, that bell use is a form of child abuse meant to control and condition. Basically, you start at infancy, where you ring the bell and then do something bad o the infant (scare them, yell at them, slap them, make a loud noise, etc), and the child comes to associate the sound of the bell with something bad happening. So whenever you ring the bell, the child does what you want out of fear. It's illegal and sick. This is done with animals too in some cases for training.

This is when things started to change in Gravity Falls, when everyone could finally remember the weirdness. When the Society of the Blind Eye was still around, people still wouldn't recognize the work Dipper has been doing. So it was neat to see that change so early in this episode. Loved that moment where Dipper and Pacifica click and it surprised them both.

If I had a nickel for every time Kevin Michael Richardson played a demonic blue ghost in this series, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but hey if the shoe fits…what? This is Gravity Falls. To point out something’s weird would be like saying birds fly. Also points to Archibald (who has been classified as Dipper as a Category 11 ghost after this incident) for recognizing that Pacifica may be different other Northwests who came before her and not immediately petrifying her or trying to stop her from opening up the gates. There’s a fine line between justice and vengeance, and while Archibald seemed like the vengeful sort at first and would probably be satisfied with turning all of the Northwests into wood for eternity, he ultimately wants to see justice done for all the common folk of Gravity Falls who’ve been trampled on time and again by the Northwests and their ilk while they get away with it. And then per the Book of Bill and the ARG associated with it, Archibald becomes a guardian angel of sorts for Pacifica too to shield her from Bill’s intrusive and manipulative thoughts. I’d like to think that might give way to Pacifica and Wendy forming a kinship too and paving the way to a better healthier (non-romantic; Dipcifica is what the writers seem to be pushing and I’m not going to argue with that not that I’ve any want or intent to) relationship between the Northwests and Courderoys centuries later.

Judging by the episode’s climax where she defies them finally, the bell’s definitely not magic. If it were, she would never have been able to resist its control. No, there’s definitely something horrible associated with that bell that makes Pacifica know to expect severe punishment if there’s further disobedience. And that’s kinda true, as she’s grounded for most of the summer after this (explaining why she doesn’t show up after this episode until the very end)
