But the fact is, the roots tear up the wall (you saw the paint from the window come off as well), causes wood to rot, and will cause the house to crumble far faster than if you took it off and did the required patch work and wood replacement.

Don't say you're not part of that number. The first time that happened to me, I actually DID put it in park, but the transmission mount was bad and it was only part way in. I walked back to the rear of the truck to get a shovel out and when I stopped, it kept going. I watched, then heard that tell-tale sound CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG as the transmission hook was trying to finally grab the flywheel. (I guess it hit enough of a bump to cause the transmission to shift just enough...) That was a very weird feeling.
