They used to have an early version of this 40 years ago (at the local pizza place). You put your finger in and gave it a quarter and it would measure your stress level. The second lowest reading was 'calm, cool, and collected'. I always got the lowest reading 'are you sure your alive'. 😁😁 (BTW congrats).

So again it boils down to regular sleep and exercise... Unlike some other influencers and health gurus would like to tell you, there's no magic health trick around the basics :) Also don't take this as a criticism against you ofc the Samsung partnership probably pays the bills and keeps the channel running, but I really don't see why people need these "smart" gadgets to tell them this. Like I can feel my energy levels without my phone telling me the exact heart rate I have at any given moment.

Totally get this, I was trying to give general advice with the sleep regularly/physical activity that people can use outside of having any wearables/devices etc. always helpful to be in touch with how you're feeling. @PhotonBeast

I don't disagree though I will push back gently as not everyone's body or mind may necessarily respond to sleep signals in the same way or may be cognizant of them. They may need a little nudge(s) for various reasons. That said, that may be something as simple as a regular alarm on their phone or having their Google Home/Alexa/Siri announcing that it's bed time or whatever trigger or habit may be useful. For me, I actually have two alarms. One is a 'It's time to wind down' alarm which reminds me to start wrapping up whatever I'm doing, wash up, as well as to avoid starting any task that will be time-intensive such as starting a load of laundry. I have a second one that's a 'last call' to remind me that I now have an active choice - I can either not go to bed right now and miss my sleep cycle window (which won't come around again until like... 4-6 AM) or I can get into bed, do any small last minute things, and fall asleep.

I was with you up until the conclusion which appeared to infer the the outcome of a week of tailoring your habits to include daily exercise and the subsequent increase in the app energy score should be taken as an indication of 'supporting' the research. Especially if Samsung's metrics and (likely fairly simple) score model were based off such research - which it sounded like earlier in the video it was. It's not really that your personal experience from the week can't be aligned with the research, it's the inference that the samsung app/model output can be seen as supporting the research. Personally I would anecdotally agree that sleep regularity not just duration plays a part, so it is interesting to see it coming out in the research. Thanks for sharing the video, and congratulations on future bub.

Idk how I missed that memo but I didn't know regularity was more important than amount. I have dsps (natural bedtime 5am) and kids so I have to be up early on weekdays so I'd been just trying to get to sleep as early as possible and then feeling guilty when I got less than what I thought I needed per sleep debt. I'm gonna lower my goal and instead shoot for a consistent but achievable bedtime and see if that works 😊

I tried a smartwatch for a year or two, and for me the best thing about it was that it just helped to give me a general idea about how long I slept for, so I could kind of align that with how long I _thought_ I slept for. So it was more of a guide than anything else so that I could tell how long I slept when I wasn't wearing it. But it was really interesting to see how crap my sleep was after I drank alcohol, my heartrate never dropped down into the 40bpm like it usually would when I was asleep, and it stayed more around the 60bpm range, almost as if I was still awake..
@braincraft
@braincraft Ай бұрын
Totally agree - When I started using a smart watch the reaction to alcohol on sleep/heart rate really blew my mind. And 'sleep state misperception' (the gap between your perception and reality with how long you're sleeping for) is totally a thing!
@JoeBob79569
@JoeBob79569 Ай бұрын
@@braincraft Yea, exactly. I didn't know that sleep state misperception was really a thing until now, but I definitely noticed that too on a few of the nights where I thought I hadn't slept at all. I'd think I was awake for the whole night, but then my watch would tell me I got maybe 4 hours of sleep. I kind of thought the watch was bullshitting me! But another fun thing I noticed was that my heart rate would go up a little bit when friends called over. I think just the effort of talking, listening and thinking requires a bit more energy than just sitting by yourself. I suppose it's because you're using different parts of the brain when interacting with people.

I have a crazy idea to help people, particularly young people, maintain a more consistent sleep schedule. I have always found that the days i find it easiest to wake up (big struggle for me) are the days when i have something exciting i want to do in the morning. Sometimes that exciting thing has just been a video game i really wanted to play. We all know how addictive mobile games can be, what if you could make an addictive mobile game that rewards you for bookending your sleep routine with it. So the more constently you do activies in the game before and after bed the more rewards you get in game.

Genuine question: is there a point on using a ring when you already wears a watch?
@braincraft
@braincraft Ай бұрын
If you wear a smartwatch it will capture pretty much the same data (The Samsung Galaxy Watch also does the Energy Score, for example). I've been into the ring over a watch since trying it as it's more of a 'set and forget' - I get to wear an analog watch again and feel more disconnected (in a good undistracted way!) because I'm not getting notifications or constantly checking the weather on my watch. But do what works for you!

@braincraft
@braincraft Ай бұрын
Totally get this! Base model smartwatches tend to be cheaper than the ring (links in the description), and you could always get an older model that tend to go on sale when the new ones come out. You can also use a sleep diary - a good old pen and paper - to record the time you go to bed and get up every day for a few weeks to get a sense of your sleep regularity. And depending on your phone's operating system, it can give you an idea of sleep regularity (assuming you use your phone before you go to bed and when you get up). Hope that helps!

My most important question is will this ring collect your data and be collected by Samsung? if so this will be a massive no.

There are definitely options with this - for example there are more private modes where you can turn off syncing with the cloud to just collect data locally on your phone, you can not consent to sharing your data, you can erase your data at any time. From my experience most companies that make wearables are very sensitive to this and give you options to align with your comfort level

Relying on gadgets is ineffective to determine why you're feeling tired all the time. All the gadgets do is keep track of what few elements they can measure, and then show that data to you. But the subset of data they can show excludes a lot of information that also leads to feeling tired. Improving sleep regularity, sleep duration and physical activity is great. But psychological and pathological issues also lead to feeling tired all the time, and the ring is incapable of alerting you to such causes.
