I always love your videos. Right now, I am a bit nervous. I can't "winter" my trees at my house because my furnace is in my garage and pretty much never gets below 50 degrees F at any time even when outside temps drop into the teens or below. I sent all of my trees off to my sister's place where she can keep them from freezing but still get cold. I have no idea what to expect when I pick them up in the spring BUT I am pretty sure that I won't see a 100% loss. "Wintering" bonsai is very difficult for me and depending on someone else is my only option to keep the roots from freezing.

Hi Milton, love watching your videos! They’re very informative. Do you have any recommendations or guidelines for someone who is starting their bonsai journey in the winter? I recently purchased a few nursery plants, but I am hesitant to repot or put them in the ground since it is winter. I am also somewhat concerned about watering it rains a lot where I live. For reference I am in Washington, zone 8b-9a. Thank you!

Growing them in the ground should. be fine...and do want to prevent the rootball of your bonsai freeze over. Enjoy your bonsai...they are very forgiving... Also never worry about overwatering...jsut don't let them sit in water...Bonsai pots hav good drainage holes.

Love your videos , i love bonsai trees 🥰 i have a baby jade, trying to learn as much as I can to make it a beautiful tree someday

I recommend traditional bonsai material, which by definition willl increase its beauty over time. Some only looks nice never spectacular.

@@MiltonChang I want a variety someday could you recommend some trees that are easy? Lol , I have a disability, but I love the trees.

Hi Milton, happy and successful new year, That was interesting I wouldn't disagree with any advice on styling you gave the owners of the trees. I hope they have taken your advice, the whole thing boils down to time and patience with any tree to create a credible bonsai.

Yu got it! everything has to be self consistent... For example...I only wire my tres sometimes...because I rather spend 1/2 hour over 4 times (two hours total) instead of spending 1/2 day to wire a tree to speed up the process by 1/2 year. We all have different priorities...NEVR point fingers!

Happy new Year to you too! I am an eternal optimistist...See possibilities in failures...that keeps me going. Bonsai give me reinforcement...because I can always envision what it took like down the road.

Eastern Red Cedar is juniperus virginiana. I don't see it used often as bonsai in my area, but would like to see it under serious development. From my front porch I can see old growth red cedars, towering over other forest trees. From the typical Christmas-tree shape as young trees, they develop into trees with a lot of character. Probably the goal should be a somewhat large bonsai; the coarse foliage might not lend itself to shohin or slightly larger.

I live in the Memphis area and I have a bunch of eastern red cedar and a forest group, they make awesome bonsai except for the cedar apple rust that pops up once a year but yeah they are good material

@@JoshAbston138 I wish I could see your forest. I have eastern red cedar all around me; I should collect some in late winter/early spring. A suburb south of Dallas is Cedar Hill, a cedar paradise. I am aware that club members did some collecting, but nothing ever turned up at meetings or exhibits. Thanks for your reply.

If I have a great bonsai contender in my backyard, is it possible to keep it in the ground or is it a must to take it out of the ground and pot it?
