This might get lost in the comments but feel like I should say something as someone who works with people with Schizophrenia. Yes, you can’t CURE schizophrenia but you can bring someone back to BASELINE or close to baseline with life long medication and for a time, therapy until they don’t need it anymore. This is a proven thing and I see it everyday. These are people who are capable of the same things as you and I but have to deal with the stigma of being labeled as “dangerous” and “beyond help” which is not the case. HOWEVER, you need to have people provided with basic necessities such as food and housing to even be able to get stable enough to adhere to medication and therapy. That’s why a lot of people end up in a cycle of poverty and homelessness because without your basic needs being met you don’t realistically stand a chance.

While I agree, it also wasn't what they said. They were talking about the potentially unsaveable. Are there people with mental illnesses or whatever that are so far gone that no amount of help will bring them back to an acceptable quality of life? Interpretation time: when he brought up his friend it was probably a bit of introspection as to if things could have been different. Some people talk like this, "I was always going to get into drugs". I'm so sick of the twisted framing in the comments to make a point, there was no need to imply that you were refuting/answering their question.
@grieftick4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAwesomoe I’m not sure if you’re referencing my comment or not, but I work in Schizophrenia research and conduct treatment with folks who have this diagnosis or related diagnoses, so when psychosis related mental illness comes up I do make it a point to inform people that the people I see daily are just that-people. And homelessness and being provided basic needs are vital in recovery and treatment (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs etc etc) which is what I was saying (and echoes to an extent what Hassan was saying). This is a supplement to the conversation, not an attack. Promise.

For the issue of individuals that are so “far gone” and require sustained mental health services, there needs to be public institutions to humanely treat and care for them. Behavioral health institutions got heavily defunded because some of the horrific state mental asylums, but kicking these people onto the streets is not the solutions. Correcting the housing, healthcare, food and other basic needs for humanity is important, but there will be those that require behavioral health institutions for their dignity and care. These should be invested in and professional occupations should be fostered so more people enter this field of work.

It has been along time, but I remember reading that the horrible conditions that some of these hospitals were being ran was a tactical choice by politicians hoping to defund this social service. So for many years they would vote for less money to be allocated and less regulations for quality care given. After so long the case was made that it should be left to the private sector to take care of this particular class of people bc the government just "couldn't get it right". Exactly what is happening with the USPS and Public Education.

I'm surprised with Andrews knowledge he is a great interviewer . Seeing all gas I thought maybe he was just super good at editing ...but he is actually knowledgeable and a great interviewer ! Not just good at getting the memes . I'm looking forward to following him in the coming years !
