In my opinion, Monarch made some of the highest quality lathes ever, and you would make them proud to call you one of them.

I am also amazed at the folk who designed this over 80 years ago, without CAD and CAM. All manual, then a lot of testing.. Theory is great but testing is essential to iron out any glitches. Now Keith shows great ingenuity to recreate all these bits using unconventional (to us) machining methods. Have learnt a lot from this and his previous videos, over at least 10 years. Self taught machinist in Land Down Under.

Too late now but a checkerboard or xxx type pattern has been found to be probably the best for wet clutches and brakes. It prevents irregular wear like the grooves in the original hub while also allowing space for the oil to go on application and free flow back to lube the surface on release.

Keith, would there be a benefit to balancing all of the rotating parts to reduce the chance any possible vibration being induced into the operation? Maybe the intended application does not warrant that degree of precision. But watching the care you are taking, it makes wonder if it is worth the effort. Love the versatility of the K&T universal. Thanks for sharing.

The big clutch on the outside of the gearbox has been ballanced back in the day and that has weight pull over the differences of keyways and what not on the input shaft.

Lovely match pair cone and taper, that brake material looks like it machines really nicely and I guess it makes sense being a 7 degree taper as that's very similar to the camlock on my Harrison at 7 1/4 degrees.

From the start of this episode I’ve tried to wrap my mind around this break system. “ To me” shove a cone inside a cone, check that works. Friction material in an oil bath system, yep that works too just like in an automatic transmission. Unfiltered oil is my hang up. As the shoe and drum ware the debris has to go somewhere and will stay in suspension until the machine is off for a while ( several hours or even days). Is the volume so small that it a non issue? What is or was the thinking behind not filtering the oil? By the way I’ve enjoyed watching you build this break system. Thanks
@Paul-FrancisB2 ай бұрын
Its no different to the clutch on the primary of an old motorbike (of a similar era), that's why you use a gear oil without detergents in it (and not ATF which is full of detergents) so the rubbish can settle out at the bottom of the casing
@bcbloc0212 күн бұрын
The next series of Monarchs had oil filters on the pressure lube to the headstock. They were just developing oils at this time, much less filtration. In practice its literally thousands of hours of operation for it to damage things so it is not ideal but also not an issue.

What a nice result! Why not measure across the original oil groves bottom to determine how deep to cut the new groves. The original groves bottom dimension should not have changed?
@KeithFenner2 ай бұрын
What I did is figure the amount of travel for the taper to bottom out and made sure the groves were deep enough to still be effective.

Im curious if the really nice surface finish you gave the cone will cause it to glaze over early in its life cycle, reducing its efficiency. I suppose the oil prevents that from happening. It's also important to have the correct brake material for oil bath applications.

What is up with the jerky/ stick slip start on the K&T X travel? Is something worn out there?

Why did you use your K&T instead of your lathe?
@KeithFenner2 ай бұрын
I have started packing up the Rutland lathe for the "give-a-way" aready and the Clausing lathe, even after regrinding the 66 year old three jaw does not give me what I strive for in the acuracy. The Three jaw attachment I made for the K&T back about 10 years ago, pulls though with accuracy and matching angle cuts with auto feed, in one set up.

Power feed to cut this taper. Doing on the Clausing would require feeding the compound in by hand. …not to mention the “just because I can” factor! Dare to do something different in your machine setup.
