Video of the brake drum hub removal from a 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook using an OTC-7394 puller. This puller is bad ass and I highly recommend it if your removing drum/hubs like these.

I'm 67 years old and have never seen such a garage tool, ever. Cool.

Mopar held onto this outdated concept until 1964 before going to the standard type axle in '65. Most others had ditched these by 1950-51. Andy Bernbaum who sells vintage Mopar parts also sells that type of tool.

Big help. Glad you included where to get the puller. Chrysler products are like no others.

You aren't kidding. Thanks for the kind words.

As a bonus the left side wheel bolts are left hand thread through 1970.

I have a 1947 Frazer (Kaiser-Frazer) and I've been fighting with the rear drums for a long time now. Broke one drum puller already, but not this type here. The front drums were simple, but the back have been a nightmare. Hopefully, the drum puller you have here, will also work on a Kaiser - Frazer vehicle, too. I'll have to go find one now. Thanks for uploading this video !

So, "how'd it go" now that a year has passed?
@jerryhorn36214 жыл бұрын
If ya never want to have to do it that way again ( unless you need to get at axle bearing) simply grind the head of the rivets off that secure the drum to the flange, drive the rest of rivets into the brake area, slide the drum off as you do on any other vehicle. Make sure you account for the rest of each rivet once drum slides off. On my 39 P-8 Plymouth coupe I went a step further. Tapped threads into hub and used bolts to secure drum back on. Not necessary as the Wheel bolts ( WHEN properly torqued) do same thing.

Awesome! Just got my tool, using on a a 50 Plymouth! BTW, is there anything needed to know on re installing the drum?

Nice video. Those old 50s brakes can be a pain. I just had to do them on my 52 plymouth. Waiting for new master cylinder now to finish mine.

it's slso recommended to back off the 2 minor brake adjusters at the back of the plate, so the drum will come off much easier.

Thanks for the video, how do you press the hub back on? Just with that center nut?
@seed_drill71355 жыл бұрын
I've got one of these, but, despite hammering away with a 9 pound sledge hammer, the thing won't budge. I've actually marred the ends of the striking surface. I've got two broken studs, next to each other, so I can't spread the hooks out as evenly as would be optimal.
@tijuanabrassman2 жыл бұрын
I’ve only got two studs left on my drivers side rear drum On a 52 dodge coronet I just bought I am so not looking to take this hub off anybody know if the studs are pressed in or screwed in I just need to replace the three studs that are broken

Holy crap! I’m glad I stumbled upon this. I have a similar set up. I had no idea they were pressed onto a tapered axle shaft. 🙄 Do you just use the washer and castle nut to press it back on?

Any information on you can share on 41 Plymouth P12 brakes drums...look the same.. Same brake set up as your Cranbrook? My grandad had that puller from 1940s.. but could not locate it after he passed away. We did my 41 drums in 89...its been awhile and my memory has faded ... planning to purchase that drum puller you have

Thank you, just going to do all four of my brakes on my 51 Cranbrook as well. Were the front brakes easier?
@rickpazmino58207 жыл бұрын
Front drums don't need the puller as they are just on bearings, so they're much easier. Make sure you change the return springs on any of the brakes you do, had one of mine break after servicing them, and after changing only one sides springs, braking caused the car to pull to the opposite direction. So do both sides. New return springs from Old Moparts are beefier as well. Thanks.

Same crappy set up on my '66 AMC. The castle-nut is like 1 3/8" and is locked up tight. Gonna break out the 1" impact and let the big dog eat.

i will never understand, why spend lots of money on cars and tools they do not know how to use but do not join a club or buy and study a service manual. this guy does not know the proper way to run the puller this type of hub was VERY common and used on jeeps to the 70s from a P18 owner and car tech from mid 60s. follow this instruction risk axle damage

If you got a better way to remove the drum feel free to post a link!
