I think it would be worthwhile to mention some of the standard brake setup in VAG cars that allow for simple upgrade of rotor size (to higher OE one). For example the 288mmx25mm front disc in the Octavia I use (mk2 FL) can have its rotors upgraded to 312mmx25mm keeping pretty much everything same (as pads, calipers, brake boosters, guiding pins etc are all the same). The case is similar for many mk5/mk6 golf platform cars that use the particular size. Effectively you get a bigger heat sink (and if needed a sportier version of it too) for a very small cost.

the golf mk5 r32 and audi s3 3.2L use 345mm rotors and these can be bolted on to other vehicles based on the mk5 platform. i know people using porshe 370mm brake rotors on a mk5
@avinashclt
@avinashclt 7 жыл бұрын
They can't be bolted on straight onto every Mk5 vehicle, for eg to those which are running stock 288mm/312mm setups. It would then require different calipers, different pads and more. But upgrade with using OE components itself is possible. VAG parts bin and interchangeability is quite extensive. P.S: I also own a Skoda Superb Mk2 3.6, which has the same brake setup (345mm vented front and 310mm vented rear, like the R36 passat), but they can't be swapped onto my other Skoda car which uses 288mm rotor setup.

YellowStuff pads are NOT track pads. They make no claim they are full track pad. YellowStuff are for Fast Road use, AND some light track use. (3-5 laps then cool the car down) Bluestuff pads and OrangeStuff pads are for track use.

Great info as usual. I personally find the EBC yellow to be street-track pad and not a true track pad. I've had issues with them, but there's limited options...

MrConflictedd, I agree with you. I have them on my MK5 with 350bhp, they're OK for the street, but brake 7-8 times hard and they'll start to fade...

Thats because thats exactly what it is. A few laps on a track, but not for Racing or all day track use.

Brakes are normally slotted or drilled not for heat dissapation, but for off gassing between rotor and pad.

Slightly off topic but, why is so little attention paid to rear brakes? With the advent of ABS are the small calipers and rotors still good enough? Wouldn't braking distance be much improved by investing (by auto makers) in better rear brakes. My assumption is cost. Or maybe weight transfer causes the tiny brakes to still be the max that a vehicle needs.
@avinashclt
@avinashclt 7 жыл бұрын
Weight transfer is pretty much the reason. Even those cars with smaller difference between front and rear rotor dia (Eg: B8 Audi S4 with 345 front vs 330mm rear or a F10 BMW 535d/535i), you will notice that rear rotors are considerably thinner (even if both are ventilated, front thicker by 33% roughly). This means a considerably smaller heat sink is required at the rear, which corresponds to lesser momentum to stop and thereby lesser braking force. So for the same cost of development/upgrade, the improvement in braking is better achieved by focusing on the front itself. That being said depending on the ratio of the weight transfer, braking pressures that are possible through a given booster/pad/caliper etc, the rear rotors/pads may need upgrade too, in order to fully utilize the benefit of an upgraded front brake without the rear starting to lock.

@danelio

@@robertbarrett778 yellows for the track for track driving, red for the street for sport driving. Commenter is stating that yellow ebc track pads aren't that great for actual track use, so the red sport pads would be even worse. Not just that, he clearly stated that the red pads are not suitable for track use, totally opposite of what you implied.

Just go with big brake kit. I bought three BBKs in the past several years, never regret. Swapping pads on a stock single piston brake is just pain in the ass comparing with a four/six piston system anyway.

Great videos. Quick question. If buying a new car, with 0 miles on it, should you bed in the brakes, or has VW done that at the factory? on a side note how can one find out all (or some) of the car prep done by VW out of the factory? CHEERS

Just had a look on EBC site and there's stated the opposite for the pads: Yellowstuff are metallic the most agressive for street and the redstuff are ceramic, designated for track use. Did they changed the "color code"?

Sebastian Liciu so much poor information in this video. For the record, slotting the rotors absolutely does not help with heat dissipation either! It’s to remove brake dust and water.

It'd be great if you could do one of these for tires. The factory tires are barely acceptable, and with a tune I spend more time spinning tires than going (even with all the electronic assists). i'm thinking good tires mean better braking.. Thanks for all your great work!

I have a question so what about if I did one track day per year would the red pad still wouldn't be good? Also maybe I can message you and we can work together in the future
@RacerCurtis
@RacerCurtis 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is not about one track day per year. It's about whether your pads will be good for even one session. If your brake pads aren't up for it, you will have a set of fading (and maybe even smoking) pads after just one session. Getting eaten up isn't the issue here for these pads (just make sure you check the thickness often), the issue is whether they will be able to take the heat.

Question, hopefully sombody with so. E experience can help. I've tried aftermarket breaks before. My biggest concern with aftermarket breaks, is the quality & longevity. The issue I've always had was the rotors warp, I get too much vibration and the pads Squeal at low speeds. For that reason, I'd lean towards Oem breaks. Does you guys find EBC pads and rotor do this?

EBC Yellow stuff is not a track pad. Please read the website it says STREET, DRIFT, and SHORTER TRACK use. It also says the yellow stuff doesn't need to be warmed up. "it has high friction from cold, not requiring warm up for street use yet when loaded up and really hot the brakes just get better". Stop spreading misinformation based on guesswork.

I track my car and daily drive it. From my experience, EBC yellowstuff is everything but a TRACK pad. Honestly it doesn't make significant noise during daily driving. But it's horrible on tracks. PLEASE AVOID IT AT ALL COST ON TRACKS, cause they will smoke like they are on fire, they will fade, and they will be extremely inconsistent (all happened to me). I personally would even pick the stock S3/R pads over them. Just go with some quality pads like iSweep IS3000 I'd say. Avoid this cheap piece of garbage at all cost.

I'd say yellowstuff was fine on my TTS for 2-3 laps until they faded and needed cooling. Lasted 3 track days. Now on bluestuff and much better, no fade no noise. And still road legal. Will see how long they will last though.
