I once seriously injured my hand by a spinning winch handle. Currently we use a Dutton-Lainson brake winch to rig and de-rig sailboats. Equipment can be damaged or totally destroyed if a heavy mast is dropped. Safe and no worry with the Dutton-Lainson winch.

Thanks for your question! Yes, a D-L brake winch's minimum load requirement changes depending on what model of winch you have. For instance, our DLB350A brake winch has a 50 lb. minimum load and our B3503 brake winch has a 500 lb. minimum load. All of our DLB-series brake winches can be operated with a drill instead of cranking a handle if you install the square tube hub from the 6453 (www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14467) or the 6454 (www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14468) handle kits on the drive shaft. You then use the 6456 drill drive socket (www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14466) on your drill to operate the winch. Photos of this setup are shown on the 6456 product page.

I have a DLB2500A brake winch on my kayak lift from Dock Doctors. I cannot figure out how to lube the winch as it is making a deafening squeaking noise. It has a cover on it that I cannot get off to lubricate. Please advise. Thank you!

Thanks for your question! The cover should only have one or two bolts that need to be loosened to remove the cover. If they appear rusted or are difficult to remove for any other reason, you may have to shear off one or both ends of the bolts to gain access to the rest of the winch. Once you have the cover removed, you should apply a good marine grease to the winch's gears, reel shaft, and handle threads. This should be done at least once a year but probably more frequently than that in your case, since it is used on a kayak lift near water.

I am a tower crane operator and I am looking for a winch that I can use to bring up and down my backpack I do this every day I just wish it was easier but I don't think the winch is available are capable of holding a 300 feet half inch rope.

However, it is not possible to install strap on B-series brake winches.
