As a native of a place called Caithness I am interested in the Picts history. Caithness is believed to be named after a Pictish king called Cait. Also Caithness Orkney and Shetland have high concentration of brochs which were forts built by the Picts. This was a an interesting look into Robert e Howard's Picts. Cheers

A noted cultural anthropologist studied how certain root words like mama and water appeared worldwide and he came to theorize that many parts of the world had a a small dark people originally who worshipped a Mother Earth based goddess with oral traditions of a more war like people coming out of the north; conquering them, who brought with them a belief in a father god fron the stars. Even original inhabitants of Africa; the apricit colored south african pygmy had similar story of more war like black invaders from the north believing in a father god from the sky.

I've noticed the extent to which Howard's representations of picts and native americans coincide. He takes in the full spectrum of native american stereotypes, from the bestial to the noble. The only positive thing i can honestly say about Nietzsche, is that he ultimately inspired the fantasies of R.E.H. in ways that make Darwin and reality seem dull by comparison. But stories are only stories, after all, and didn't the picts also wear war paint?

Yes, i think so. REH, i think put the most work into his world, with respect to the rest of the writing circle. CAS is the best stylist - also he takes his stories not too seriously. HPL though of the best stories and frankly how to use the mechanics of fear in narration most effectively. CAS came up with a number of worlds, also sword and sorcery style in Zothique - you can feel the influence of Jack Vance quite a bit (Dying Earth). Some of his pieces clearly stand out. His Vaults of Yoh-Vombis are pretty similar the plot in Alien, if you think about it. He never put as much effort into it as REH, however. Its a bit like Tolkien, a bit obsessive for sure, but then a detailed world really is worth something. You can feel it. The stories profiteer from it imensely. Same thing with Forgotten Realms in D&D (Ed Greenwood). What we basically need is a stylist as gifted as CAS with the effort of a REH or Tolkien and the narrative perfection of a HPL crafting up stories set in a vancian Dying Earth sword and sorcery setting in a cinematograpic style like RR Martin.
