Initially I had only read and heard the later interpretation of this tale impart with Conan as its lead. But I have to say that this is a much more complete and satisfying Tale. Robert Howard was a brilliant writer, and the progenitor of sword and sorcery fiction. I never tire of reading his works in whatever form.

As much as I love the Phoenix and the Sword, that story was originally meant to be this one. Why the publishers rejected the original draft, I know not . Perhaps it needed a rework and got it in the story we have now. It is a tribute to Robert E Howard genius.

This was rousing, it reminded me how awesome Kull was. Love Conan but Kull was something else. I always feel that Kull was a reflection of REH and the constraints he faced in his short life.

An alliance of jealous nobles and outlaws plan on assassinating King Kull, having sown dissent among the citizens before subverting an officer of the royal guard into removing his men so their assassins have access to the King's chamber. The king is aware of the discontent, though not of their specific conspiracy. Meanwhile, Kull laments on how the laws of Valusia hamper his rule, and never allow him to govern as he wants. A young nobleman visits him and ask to marry a slave girl, but Kull is advised that this is impossible under an ancient law, engraved on a tablet crafted by hallowed lawmakers many centuries ago. Saddened, the nobleman is sent away with regrets. Later, Kull has an encounter with the man's love interest, crying in the woods, and tries in vain to console her. The girl is a slave owned by one of the conspirators seeking to murder Kull, and overheard her master mention his plan with one of the fellow conspirators - whereupon she hastens to tell her lover. That night, the conspirators - four leaders and sixteen robbers - sneak into the palace and enter Kull's private chambers. However, Kull awakens, realizes something is wrong, and manages to arm himself. Seizing an antique battle axe, which had hung on the wall for decades, he fights furiously, one against many, killing a large portion of the attackers. Still, he is nearly killed by the conspirators' leader when needing to wipe blood from his eyes. In the nick of time, the young noble arrives with his retainers, killing the assassin and saving Kull's life. Though severely wounded, Kull is determined to reward fittingly the young lovers who saved his life. There and then he smashes with his axe the Tablets of the Law, proclaiming "I am the law!", "I am king, state, and law!" and "By this ax I rule!", before allowing the couple to happily marry.

Good old fashioned sword and sorcery storytelling at it's best. I had no idea the "who dies first?" phrase from The Scorpion King (a lame movie) originated from Robert Howard's stories.

Total toss up. Kull is an absolutely huge man, a colossus, and by most accounts he's generally considered to be even slightly taller and heavier than Conan, who is nevertheless of truly great physical stature himself. I suspect that, due to his background as a gladiator and soldier, Kull might have more extensive formal military training in the use of arms, while Conan's fighting style is possibly more wild, instinctive, and unconventional. Conan remains unwaveringly very close to his fiery and savage warrior upbringing in Cimmeria, but Kull was raised in Atlantis as a feral child among tigers, and goes into a furious berserker rage when in battle, owing to his spirit totem, the tiger. In terms of sheer physical strength the two men are very likely absolute equals. So take your pick. lt would be a truly epic clash of titans, and unboubtedly an extremely long and grueling battle. My money's on Kull ultimately, but it's probably more likely they would simply end up killing each other. I'm slightly biased l admit, Kull being by far my favorite REH character and stories, though l am a great Conan and Solomon Kane fan as well. Conan is obviously a virtually unbeatable warrior, but check out the story 'Kings Of The Night' to see what total havoc Kull is capable of. He kills a giant Viking chieftain named Wulfhere literally with his bare hands, and in battle utterly wrecks an entire regiment of well over a hundred soldiers completely single-handedly.

Robert E. Howard wrote the story first with Kull as leading character. After he realized Weird Tales payed more for his Conan stories he wrote the same story with Conan as leading character. According to the available evidence of his legacy.

@@RolandWieffering1 Actually, Phoenix was the first Conan story he ever wrote and the first that was ever published, so it wasn't based on how well Conan was selling because he didn't exist yet. Howard did, however, add elements to the story that he knew would make it work better for Weird Tales than his Kull stories had.
@cheritripp9470

Ah, this was rewritten later as The Phoenix On The Sword. Howard's first published Conan story. Interesting that there were no supernatural elements in this version. Also interesting that Kull's friend was a Pict. Yet they are his descendant, Conan, swore enemies. And another Howard's story, Valley Of The Worm, also has Picts in an more favorable light. And Picts are the protagonists in his Bran Mak Morn series. Ironically that it took the actions of a slave girl and her free man lover and an assassination attempt to have Kull be King in deeds as well as title.
@jacobitewiseman3696

Well Picts were not necessarily Canadians. They were animalistic orclike men if you could call them that.

To add,: Conan was himself saved by women in many stories, most strikingly by a slavegirl (Zenobia) in The Hour of the Dragon, who he elevates to a queen.
