Hi there, some great progress there. With the installation of the headshunt, the trap point would become redundant as the new point for the headshunt Will protect the running lines when set for shunting manoeuvres. This would be protected by a GPL showing one white and one yellow lamp when in the on position( as this allows it to be passed at “danger” when performing a move into the headshunt, it would then display to white lights at 45 degrees when a train is leaving. The headshunt would then require a more standard one red and one white at danger to allow movement out of the headshunt. This would typically be left in the off position in order to allow shunting to continue without the signaller being pestered by the shunter.
@ChadwickModelRailway
@ChadwickModelRailway Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your fascinating comment. I will at a later date, address the signalling for the whole area. I do hope that you will be involved. Regards, Charlie
@johnnew3096

Agree. The new headshunt point makes the trap redundant as it performs the same protective junction. At the simplest a trap is for junction protection a catch point for derailing runaways on an incline.

You could find all sorts of complicated track on the entry and within goods yard. It all depended on the space available. There was a station in the Harrogate area with interlace left hand points facing each way. St Neots station yard had an outside slip until the 1990s, long after the yard had seen its last train. At Etherley tip o the Darlington to Bishop Aukland line there was a single slip with the tracks serving the sidings. Si your friends were wrong to persuade you to not use a slip in your goods yard.

The ramp idea would work for road cars loading on Rail because you roll on one end then roll off the other like on Eurotunnel but without the loco staying on the front. Just need a shunter at the rear to present to the ramp for offload after decoupling the main loco

I admire your patience, and it is fascinating to see how the goods area and branch line station are, is developing. A biscuit factory would be an ideal industry as it is also situated near the kettle in the background. It would also provide local employment and steady income for people. Many towns had these types of industrial sites near to railway sidings when much freight was transported by train.

Hi Charlie, A big improvement on your original plan it will be interesting to follow your progress. I don't know about a motorail depot but Abingdon (a smaller station than yours) shipped new MG's out on carflats until the factory closed in 1980. The trains were quite short - 3 or 4 wagons in most photos I have seen so end loading facilities could be well used. The biscuit factory should be next to the kettle!. To keep things operationally interesting a terminus should have at least three or four different types of traffic in your case cars - biscuits out and ingredients in - coal and general goods. Another traffic that kept several branches in operation was cement in vans and presflos a cement hopper would be an interesting model. as you said there are plenty of ideas about. Keep up the good work Cheers Jon

I have a motorail facility on my layout, albeit restricted to the overnight sleeper to and from London Euston. How I do it is, for the sleeper arriving from Euston, the 47 hauls it into platform 5, and then the 08 shunter comes from the depot, the Motorail GUV is uncoupled, and taken by the 08 from platform 5 to platform 6, where the motorail ramp is. The 08 then goes and gets the other two coaches for the sleeper train, and takes them from 5 to 6, and returns to the depot. The 47 that brought the sleeper in, then goes from 5 to 6. The motorail ramp doesn't have to be in the goods area, as you've suggested, though at Fort William, the ramp was in a siding. It could be in the branch line station itself.

Hi Charlie, I'm a bit late to the show, this one passed me by for some reason. You can set me some lines as punishment, this last week Ive done the Gatwick Victoria, District, Northern and Waterloo Portsmouth plus spotted the the abandoned lines to Midhurst and Hayling Island .... I hope that counts!! The branchline is really shaping up, I like the idea of the ramp. There is far more space than I imagined there would be, I think giving it a disused or less used feel would be a good idea. You may need to learn how to model weeds though. In my garden its just a case of turning my back and up they grow!! And you still have more space to expand ........ to the newly abandoned kitchen area!! Have a great week!!

Charlie, it is truly a joy and inspiration to watch your channel. I'm part-way through rebuilding my layout. I have to admit, it can get overwhelming with everything that needs to be done and trying to plan everything up-front before committing with glue and solder. Watching you frequently changing and adapting yours as you go. Coming back to chisel sections out and just getting stuck into track laying to run trains asap is driving my motivation. There's nothing else for it then, I'm laying the mainline track this evening!! Cheers again Charlie, all the best mate.

One thing I've noticed about goods yards on model railways is that people often fail to consider how to load/unload the wagons they have using the goods yard. Often they have yard cranes that can only load and unload a wagon but can't put the load onto a road vehicle.

Always great to watch your progress especially with your very useful hints and tips, which have helped me alot with progressing my own model railway layout despite it being in n gauge rather than oo. One thing that struck me regarding your new headshunt/siding though is that you appear to still have some spare space going towards the main line, why not make the shunt longer and then cover the extended bit with weeds and other plant growth, as this would look very, erm, prototypical. Often on the real railway we see sidings partly obscured with plants, especially rosebay willowherb. Just a thought. Keep up the good work! Cheers. Andy

Hi Charlie, Just a couple of observations whilst watching your video about the goods sidings. You don't have a catch point, what you have is a TRAP point. Trap points face on coming trains and catch points trail to prevent trains running back on gradients. Your TRAP point is not necessary as you have installed a head shunt so any conflicting movements would be diverted toward the headhunt. Great channel, Regards John Cave.

I like it so far! I'm interested to see how you put together a little town area there. That's something that I don't always see explained. You see designing the tracks, how they come in, how they'll unload, but then what happens after that's done? How do people decide what little flavor items, dressings, track infrastructure, like any mechanical stuff that is meant to model the real thing, like when you talk about those orange tubes that go under the tracks. Just adding the finishing touches once the track is down and how to decide where the depot buildings so, go especially the parts of modelling that aren't involved in the railway.

Thanks Andrew, I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting. Yes the designing of the town scene will be a bit of a challenge. The orange tubing that you mentioned was in use after my period, and has now been discontinued due to the ballasting machines. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, Great update. I think the alterations to the track plan at the branch are for the better, much more realistic. Just an FYI though, you can remove the catch point now as the point you installed for the headshunt would take over the role of the catch point. Nice to see a train running too. Cheers, Michael

Another top video Charlie. Having just seen part 1 (sorry I missed it on release so I watched it earlier) it just goes to show how things evolve all the time and that makes a lot of sense. Back when I was decades younger before the land of digital everything model railway life seemed a lot simpler, points were in my case operated manually or electrically by individual lever switches. I have a lot of learning to do in this area and thankfully by revisiting this channel it will all make sense. I'm still in the planning stage so I've yet to lay the first rail. A good job as I'd be in a right pickle if I'd already started. As always many thanks for sharing.

Hi Charlie, This section is coming on well. Just one small point (no pun intended) but with the installation of the head shunt, you've made the catch points redundant. The points on the headshunt would either be operated by a ground frame, released from the signal box, or controlled by the local signal box. It would not be possible to have a train foul the mainline. For a signal you would need a yellow/black ground position signal. This, unlike the red/white version which cannot be passed without the signal being cleared, allows movements with the signal in the "ON" position towards a headshunt. The signal would only need to be "OFF" to allow a departure on to the mainline. If you build the private industry, the catch points could be moved to protect outbound movements from that siding instead. Keep up the great work Brian

Ho Charlie, it's always interesting watching you work on your layout - even if I should be working on my own really! I would think the headshunt now makes the trap point redundant - it fulfills the role of protecting the mainline from incursion as well as allowing shunting of the goods yard. Having looked at dozens of ranch line terminii over the years (no room for anything else!) I notice that often the freight sidings are in pairs, or a pair in the middle of the yard and the outer most siding is on its own - mostly they seem to be arranged to give easy cart/lorry access to wagons. The goods shed is usually on a siding of its own so that vans don't have to be shifted when shunting is going on else where. Happy to share trackplans if you need further inspiration.

I’m thoroughly enjoying your channel. Your presentation and explanations are perfect for a novice like me. The stand out part of this episode, in particular, is your explanation of the goods movement. While I’ve enjoyed modelling, in various forms (for many more years than I care to recall), I have absolutely no idea about rail movements and this has restricted my railway modelling endeavours to small single track dioramas. Because of information you are taking the time to produce and share, I’m starting to think that a small industrial themed layout of my own may be possible and the short movements explanation prompted a Patreon membership. Any further rail movement discussions you may put in future episodes will be very welcome here.

As others have said, having a headshunt removed the need for a trap point. I won’t say ‘catch point’ as it’s not a catch point, it’s a trap point. But whichever, it’s no longer necessary as you’ve fitted a headshunt instead.

For your yard and headshunt I would have put in a double slip. It’s exactly these Low speed movements for entry in to a yard that were the sort of locations the real railway installed them. They also use less space are are less complicated than a pair of points. Generally the real railway would not have double slips on the mainline, except when entering a low speed approach to a station, like your terminus on the branch. Now that you have the interlocking of the points to the headshunt protecting the mainline, you don’t need the trap points.

Hi Charlie, once again another excellent video explaining the reasons for laying out the trackwork in a goods yard. I find you need to work out the reason's for the tracks from a company point of view i.e. cost can play a big factor and also the provision of equipment in the yard.. The containers would be off-loaded by a fixed yard crane or if the the traffic was a regular feature then a mobile crane would be provided. ( for fish traffic or milk or flowers or other perishable items) Space between the tracks would be arranged for access for horse and drays or Scammell tractors and artic. trailers. Lots of things to consider, depending how far you want to be accurate. Once again an excellent series of video's. Thanks David.

Like the new plan as it gives much more operating potential. Without realising it, I think of wagons in groups of three as well, not so much for the operational reasons you have but because working in a tighter space, three wagons roughly equal one mk 1. The maximum train length I have built around is 5 mk1s plus loco or 15 wagons plus loco and brake van.
