I am new to Jesus. A church friend called me a Berean and I asked her what that meant and she referred me to this scripture. Now I see that she is referring to the enthusiasm I have for the Lord and the bible. What a lovely compliment she paid me.

It is interesting how the Bereans in the Bible are referred to as the noble minded peoples in comparison to the Thessalonians. Why is that? Well both peoples examined Paul’s teaching and compared it with the OT. The Thessalonians found Paul to contradict scripture and rejected his word. The Bereans on the other hand found Paul did not contradict the Torá and therefore accepted his ORAL teaching. Why did the Bereans search the Scriptures? Because they were the sole source of revelation and authority? NO, but to see if Paul was in line with what they already knew-TO CONFIRM ADDITIONAL REVELATION. They would not submit blindly to his apostolic teaching and oral tradition, but, once they accepted the credibility of Paul’s teaching as the ORAL word of God, they put it on a par with Scripture and recognized its binding authority. After that they spoke of APOSTOLIC Tradition and the Old Testament equally as God’s word (see 2 Thess. 2:15, 3:16). They were willing to accept new ORAL TRADITION from Paul. The Thessalonians adhered to only their scripture and would not hear of any new teaching. You might say that they were a kind of sola-scriptura people even though that would not be invented until Martin Luther.

I've recently been watching and following the sermons of Paul Washer. I've searched the scriptures on what he preaches and believe that he is preaching the scriptures accurately. What's your take on his preaching?

False teacher. Steven Furtick is another "prosperity" preacher. He has said "he's God" so be careful of him ..

I realize this comment is a year old, but wanted to say that I, too, listened to Steven Furtick, but stopped when he twice said "I prophesize". Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't that imply that he thinks he's a prophet?

This question wasn’t directed to me but I feel it’s necessary to say. For years I was conflicted about Joel Osteen, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer, mainly bc so many spoke so much negative about them. Any time I’d watched/listened to them, I felt inspired and that they were legit. So many got hung up on the wrong thing. Their focus, on the money instead of the message. With that being the worldly view, I dismissed the naysayers and invested the time with each one. Joel Osteen, TD Jakes and Joyce Meyer have all worked *extremely hard* to get where they are today and any research will prove so. (They’ve got amazing testimonies btw.) As for Joel Osteen, I use to be one saying he didn’t ever have a Bible or quote scripture but years later God showed me, if I knew what the Bible actually SAID, I’d have known; Joel speaks A LOT of scriptures but doesn’t stop every time to say, “This is this” and “that is that“; he DOES say, “The Bible says..”. God also showed me that there’s different people/preachers meant for different times, people, etc. Like for those new to the Bible and scared of what it might say, Joel Osteen is a great starting point bc he speaks only positive. (Biblically that’d be the milk Paul spoke of.) I’ll give example of myself, starting out with Joel. Then I was prompted to go deeper, which brought me to Joyce Meyer. (Shes still a favorite today.) Then, when I was more versed, it was TD Jakes and upon watching, it’s easy to understand why, in that order. TD will say a few lines of scripture and the congregation (for the most part) who know the scripture he’s speaking, will oftentimes say the rest out loud. Sometimes, not. Either way, it could be confusing for anyone watching and not knowing. It’s powerful for the ones who do, though! It’s like how Jesus spoke in parables, and why. Not all would “get it” at that time. Sorry I wrote you a novel. Hope this helps!

@@getraptureready777 thank you for sharing! awesome allegory abt the milk for infant believers and logically as we grow more mature in the faith our spirit would yearn for more sustenance and thus progress from elementary teaching. Meat for substance is best digested with the spirit of discernment. Experience may be the best teacher for some but personally, the Holy Spirit is the bestest best for me. He illuminates and highlights the significant, may just very well be the guidance counselor of the Bereans and the importance of examining the Scripture could never be stressed enough, it's not an utter lack of faith why we examine but insatiable hunger and thirst to knowing our good good God and Everlasting Father. God bless, brethren!

Hey Daniel, how are you these days? Good to hear from you again. Is there a specific concern about Matt Chandler? I've only seen him speak once and don't know him personally but he seems like a good guy. Theologically, he and I would differ on a few topics, but I believe he is a good brother with a passion for God's people. - Darren

After all these years I just now realized where my childhood church got their name. (Berea Christian church) 😂🤦♀️ and now we all know why I'm on this journey to read the Bible for myself lol obviously I don't know near as much as I thought I did, and God keeps making that more and more clear every day. 😅

Joel Osteen radio show and book "I am" has helped me tremendously as well. I was going to the New York City Church of Christ. They believe that we must go travel to wherever the church decides to meet far away n also go to Midweek. If we don't attend these other things besides Sunday Service at 10am, they believe we get complacent, lazy, comfortable. I couldn't live up to all that traveling. The church I attend now is in one location, very convenient. Am I lazy, do I just want what I want n am I not doing more for God? I struggle with this notion. Does God expect us to be on the move like the disciplines? Or is one location convenient enough?
@BranchTogether6 жыл бұрын
Maria - thanks so much for writing! First, God doesn't call everyone to be traveling missionaries. He DOES however, call everyone to missionaries wherever we are. That means that you should be serving God and looking for opportunities to do his work wherever you are. This might mean loving your neighbors, haring your testimony to a friend, or showing Jesus' love in an outreach around your town or city. The Bible also calls us to not forsake our gatherings. The church Jared and I pastor does not meet midweek, but we do ask people to be in relationships with each other meeting for meals and mission outside of Sunday gatherings. Only you know whether you are being lazy, but the fact that you are asking the question is a very good thing. Ask God to help you see. We are also free for a Skype call one day if you want to chat it over for a few minutes. Just let us know. As far as the book by Joel Osteen. I read most of that book today so I'd be able to respond. In short, I can see why people like it because it's certainly inspirational, but I think there are many books that are more helpful in teaching us to be like Jesus. Joel makes it seem like the world revolves around us and that's not at all what Jesus taught. Jesus taught us to be servants. I'll try to write up my notes in a formal review so you can see why I suggest that. For now, I'd recommend someone like Tim Keller. His books, Encounters with Jesus, Kings Cross and even Prodigal God are great books. - Darren

That is very good to hear! (also, Be careful who you listen too) These days many of us try to go to Youttube or Google for help (or Biblical confirmation) Now, let me tell you this, doing this is not a bad things, but keep in mind that everything you see on the Internet is not always true and that we are people (Yes including paster's) and we all make mistakes. Pastor's can also tend to decieve at times (SO That is why it is EXTREMELY important to act just as the Bereans, for they were More Noble, Obedient and Eager).

In addition to answer you question, staying in one is fine unless you feel like you are being called. I also suggest to Heavily pray about things/questions like these "For many are Called, but Few are Chosen(Matthew 22:14).
