Slowing down road users on the motorway when there is no incident is dangerous, what this does is make road users see the speed limit go down, they drive past and it goes back to the national speed limit with no incident. They will start to ignore the 60 sign because they think its for nothing almost immune to the 60 sign in a way, iv seen this many times and can be more dangerous. You see a 60 sign and then when you look a mile down the road and the national speed sign is up and the road clear people will start to ignore the 60 sign.

Honestly, I think if you have a problem with this, it's probably because you do some of the things that are illegal and that it's trying to put a stop to. There are plenty of signs on the motorways telling you not to drink and drive, not to phone and drive, not to drive when tired and all that stuff, but it's your responsibility as a driver to know these laws anyway. I agree with some of your points but I don't have a problem with the existence of the camera itself, and perhaps that's because I do follow the rules. I do agree with your points about safety in respect of breakdowns and it would be an excellent use of AI to detect them and flag them so that a human can work the signs to alert people.

@@gary63693 Real people cost money, at least that's how they'll probably 'reason' around automatic fines. Speed cameras and ANPR aren't reviewed by humans unless they're disputed, so I highly doubt these will be any different. Simply checking the reg of the vehicle should show its age on the same system they need to go to to find registered keeper, etc, and from that it could be automated as to whether or not that vehicle was required to have a seat belt, but that's an extra step I doubt has been programmed into it, the overall system that is. At least until someone brings this detail to the attention of the press or whatever, for being fined for not wearing a seat belt in a vehicle without any legal requirement to have them fitted. I'm wondering how many false mobile phone fines will be sent out from it mistaking something sticking to the windscreen as a phone in someone's hand, eg, some of the larger dashcams, digital toll boxes (whatever the actual name for them is that has currently slipped my mind), etc, mounted higher in the windscreen so from outside and above they look like they could be lower down further back, like in a driver's hand, etc. I don't know if it's the same thing, but I feel I heard about cameras for detecting seat belts not being worn before, and someone had a t-shirt with a diagonal strip as part of it's design that fooled the cameras into thinking they were wearing a belt. It might have been before cameras for it and they were trying to fool police officers with it instead, and eventually got caught for it.

As a result, they wouldn't be much different to knocking an empty heavier plastic bag out of the way to see again if you did need to move the vehicle after they deployed. It shouldn't be too difficult to find one of those police programmes where an officer has driven a car with deployed airbags to the side of the road after it's crashed in a standard nose-to-tail in an overtaking lane from rubbernecking or whatever. All the systems are designed to work together. The airbag is designed to fill the space between the dash/steering wheel and where the person would be held by a seat belt, not prevent the weight of the person from making contact with the dash, just the weight of a head. Sudden stops can see injuries from seat belts, airbags, etc, but equally those sudden stops have so much energy in them that the speed at which the person would then fly forward is guaranteed to be fatal unless they're extremely 'fortunate' in how they fly through the windscreen and have their natural reaction to tense up prevented somehow, usually why drunk and drug drivers seem to get away from serious crashes, being thrown from cars, etc with minimal injuries for the severity of the collision, and they fly out of the car no matter how many airbags that car has deploy in those collisions. I think the age limit is just the point at which the passenger gets a fine directly, but the driver still gets fined separately for *allowing* them to not wear theirs as a passenger, just like how a driver is done for driving with an insecure load, regardless of whether or not they were the one to load it. There's a technical difference in the thing the driver is done for when it's a 14 year old, but if you're the one being fined as a driver, it doesn't make any difference to your licence or wallet which it is.

I'd consider that a safety risk if it's restricted to the "highest posted limit" or something stupid like that.... But I'm in Australia, in a rural area, so no motorways, and plenty of road trains. When I'm passing a road train, I want to be back onto the correct side of the road as quickly as possible. That means I don't look at the speedo, and I just go. 120km/h, 140, 160... Whatever the car feels comfortable at. I don't look until I'm past and slowing back down to 100 (or 110).
@markwright316111 күн бұрын
@@tin2001 Yeah, I think it works through sign recognition and GPS to max out at whatever the limit is for a specific road. The sign recognition cameras have been around for a while, but when introduced they regularly picked up the speed limits from side roads and people experienced the car decelerating relatively significantly while continuing on the main carriageway past these side roads. The systems might be a lot better than they were then, but I wouldn't trust them myself. It's like lane keep assist, also mandatory now. There are often things you want to steer around for safety reasons, debris, large potholes, etc, and if you try to steer over a line without indicating, even if there's not safety benefit to indicate, or especially when that indication would cause confusion/increase risk, some systems are relatively aggressive in steering you away from the line again, which will put you through the pothole or into the debris you're trying to avoid damaging your car with, but that's progress! At the moment these systems can be turned off, but they always automatically reactivate every time the ignition is turned on again, and some manufacturers bury the options in a bunch of sub menus in their central touch screens, etc, so you could spend potentially minutes at the start of every trip trying to turn them all off every time.

How does that make sense? Using your phone is dangerous regardless whether it was at the lights or if the driver was warned of a camera ahead. If a police bike pulled up alongside and caught him on the phone it is the same result. “It’s not for safety if it’s hidden”? Do you hear yourself right now? The reason why it is hidden is because it is there to catch as many drivers as possible. Which is a good thing because it is necessary to have a zero tolerance for phone use behind the wheel and refusing to wear a seatbelt. People are warned about speed cameras because it is to slow the drivers down for certain parts of the road which have increased risk for collisions. Which hasn’t got anything to do with the drivers. Smart Motorways aren’t even that dangerous it’s the people who use them. Cause the average driver can’t drive properly.

Are any of these permanent yet? Also how do they differentiate between phones and car touch screen?

Great video, thanks. Honestly, we all know what it's about - money, easy fines, using cameras to help breakdowns well, that's not a money maker is it ! There's an element of safety but, really it's just a money spinner.

I'm obviously against all of this 'control' they are trying to assert on us, but actually I support this camera. If you use your phone while driving, it has been proven hundreds of times, it does cause a massive distraction, and has led to 1000's of serious accidents involving many innocent people being killed by others using their phones whilst driving. Seat belts are not as important, and it should be a personal choice, as you are not really going to cause further injury to others if you don't wear your seatbelt, only to yourself.

They do show a lot more public safety messages on gantries in Scotland. I don't understand why they don't carry over in England and Wales too!

I dont agree to crafty surveillance but as a driver for work and a motorcyclist this needs to be done as im forever seeing people looking down to text as well as sitting in the overtaking lanes doing less than 70 over taking no one using their phone . These people are the reason this shit is happening. 🙄 For safety's sake !

All for it for catching peeps on the phone after nearly being hit with a 7 ton lorry on a B road swerving in my lane while looking at his lap on his phone hiding from view and and same on a pedestrian crossing not long ago guess will only catch if phone stuck to their ear ?

No issue with picking up people not wearing seatbelts and using mobiles. Also, you do see messages on boards about it but they could do it more i would say.

I dont actually mind these mobile phone cameras after seeing them working here in Australia for a few years... With the one condition.... They NEED to have warning signs placed far enough down the road for drivers to: 1) know its there. 2) know its specific to whatever it does. 3) know what its NOT for - ie not a speed camera, so dont panic brake and cause a crash.

The cameras you speak about looking for broken down vehicles exist! They are being implemented across certain motorways already - SVD cameras (stopped vehicle detection)
