Ethiopian Airline was formed in 1945. Most African countries were not even a country back then and some had different names like Gold Coast. Ethiopian started flying in 1945. Its no up start , or it did not just come out of nowhere. It has the best training center outside of the US. fun fact - Ethiopian makes $6 billion a year. If you put all other African Airlines together, they do not make a much as Ethiopian. Ethiopia is world famous and many choose it even in Europe.

Such a huge fan of your presentaion style! No detail left unstated and always with immaculate balance. We remember how rocky your Ethiopian experience started off with the 5th freedom GRU-EZE flights on the outdated and grim looking cabins of their 788s'. Others would have avoided them but you went back to give them a fair shake. The good thing is they have started upgrading older cabins from last month. Hopefully, in a couple of years, a more homogenized cabin across the board will be in order. I believe the A35Ks like the 773s are deployed on long and dense routes rather than prestigious. Down the line, they have 8 of the 779s' to come with more wide/narrow body orders to be announced this year according to their COO. Can't wait to see more of your African adventures this year.

@@PatrickSheaAviation they are on the right path, I’m Angolan and I’ve witnessed years and years of mismanagement and I’m very excited for the next couple of years ahead, even their newly appointed executives are much more communicative and they show a lot of behind the scenes on instagram which as we all now that is non existing when talking about African airlines as they cover up everything, this year they are discontinuing 1st class as they’ve realised it didn’t make sense as there is not enough demand and they couldn’t keep the necessary standard, (you’ll still see it around until they refurbish the b777’s interior), new rebranding with emphasis in branding the airline as Angola Airlines and not only TAAG, updated website and social media platforms, new short/medium and long haul fleet incoming a220/b787’s plus brand new airport, all of this looks great on paper so it will definitely the most exciting airline in Africa to keep an eye on this year… I saw a podcast of one of their commercial executives and he hinted that probably the route of expansion for the airline will be in Africa itself and probably Brazil and resuming flights to china, they are not very keen in starting routes to CDG, LHR or FRA as they know it is very difficult to compete against established airlines in Europe…

I believe the one stop, in Lomé, Togo, is to refuel. Rason: Addis Abeba is a high altitude city, and depending on the take-off weight of the plane, the aircraft may not be fuelled to capacity when leaving Addis on the way to the US.
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
Possibly, although the aircraft CAN reach DC and NY nonstop. My guess is that it's tied to Ethiopian's investments in Togo, so it helps Togo maintain flights to North America, for largely diplomatic purposes. That's why they've maintained the ADD-LFW-IAD route on some days, even though they will also fly nonstop with the A350-1000 I believe

Patrick. I love your content as an airline employee and an AV geek. I have USED ET extensively in my African travels and concur with your observations about their services. Their onboard service is always consistent but as you as you say you never know what cabin configuration you will get even within the same fleet. And I have never done an itinerary with them where the aircraft type has not been changed (sometimes last minute). Must be a pilot scheduler’s nightmare But they are quirky and I like them. And I, for one, am sorry to see the old red, green or yellow amenity kits phased out before I could snag a red one. It looks they trotted their -1000 around the system to show it off and now I believe all four have been delivered and they have settled on IAD (two are needed round trip because of the length of flight) while the other two are relegated to LOS (due to consistently high load factors) and LHR on alternating days. Looks like in the DXB market, they have traded frequently for the large capacity aircraft. Keep up the good work

Thanks for the video, Patrick. Last year, Nigeria was Africa's 4th largest economy by GDP, though its aviation infrastructure tells a different story. The 20-dollar "quick access fee" was well spent but unfortunately added to the Nigerian and African corruption statistics. Can a fully laden A 350 lift off from Bole International Airport? Ethiopian capitalized on the gap in African aviation. They still deserve credit for running their airline professionally for several years. What you were given on the Addis Ababa to Mumbai flight is an Indian sweet.
@bircruz55513 күн бұрын
"Can a fully laden A 350 lift off from Bole International Airport?" No. Altitude. Ethiopian planes take off the Addis Ababa airport with only half-tank of fuel. In Rome or Dublin, they fill up to capacity for their journey over the Atlantic. They do not have the same problem when they return to Addis.
@sebinamuwanga13 күн бұрын
@@bircruz555 "Half tank" is still a lot of fuel. You are looking at a 7-hour flight, which would still be a lot of weight for a Bole take-off 9assuming there is a full load of passengers). Do they carry fewer passengers and cargo? How do they manage to fly directly to Sao Paulo because, that would require more than "half a tank" of Jet A1.

That's an Indian dessert. It's cashew kathli (I think). It could also be almond.

Patrick the seat should be identical to the ones on Air France and United Airlines Polaris service seats. Because they are the same exact Safran Optima seats. Happy New Year to you Patrick they might even do this on ET509/644 EWR-ADD-MNL. Although I would still take their Star Alliance Partners from East Asia same service as ET with the proximity of Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

As a Nigerian, I am very sorry for your experience. I do apologise. I hope you are not too pissed off, and hopefully try the new terminal 🙏

Nah I really do like visiting Nigeria and I've made some great friends there. It's one of the reasons I visit 2-3 times per year! Some great stories to go along with the travels though, but overall great trips!

Hope the 4th A350-1000 would be assigned to the Add - Chicago O'Hare route.
@PatrickSheaAviation10 күн бұрын
That would be interesting! Although it doesn't seem to be the plan at the moment. The Chicago flights aren't as prestigious to Ethiopia it seems, whereas DC is a major political connection
