Miki, I am looking to order my 28's this week and managed to purchase 18's as rear. My question is regarding the 18's as rear speakers. Will the lens have an issue with a 300mm distance behind my seating position? If so, I might stick with the 8000's?
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it's no more out of the sweet spot than 8000's would be. Could you possibly make them sit a bit further of to the side of you? So lets say the Y axis is ~300mm if the X axis is about a meter or so you'll have no detrimental affect for either speaker. The lenses reflect the sound down somewhat instead of straight flat anyway, just fyi. So do you get what I am trying to say? Happy to try and make more clear or help out otherwise! Congrats on the purchase though, that'll be a terrific setup for sure!

As a surround enthousiast I would say 2 beolab 28's... They'll give you the kind of bass even 4 beolab 18's can't give you!

In March 2023 Beolab 18 in light oak are now £7350 and Beolab 28 in light oak gold are £12600 and Beolab 20 discontinued (on paper more bass and mid-way price at the time). Factor in a Beolab 19 for sub-woofer in a 5.1 system not to add bass to Beolab 28 but because there is bass from the sixth channel. No centre speaker but Beolab 7-4 around for very little cost.

Seems an odd choice not to include an acoustic lens? Other than that they look good (but not as good as 18) and great to have a fully integrated system.
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 3 жыл бұрын
Well the thing is that if you have one like the beolab 18 you can't really do beam control because the tweeter is always ''wide'' and if they opted for a beolab 50 style solution it would've been a lot bigger and wider, not to mention the extra cost of the mechanism. B&O's mechanisms tend to be built to last for ever so you can't really use anything ''simple'' because it needs to be sturdy in every environment around the world. I wonder if we like the look of an ALT lens more than the specific use of it, which in this case they couldn't justify as it would limit the speaker' performance. To me in the end the performance is at least as important if not more than the style. how about you?
@ftemmerm
@ftemmerm 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mikipedia Good point related to the lens, although if I am not mistaken width control is mainly done by tuning the midrange side pointing units, I don't see how they would control the width of the tweeter since it is simply pointing forward. Regarding design versus performance that's an interesting question. For B&O products it is really about both. I expect to receive a Beosound 2 today which I prefer over the Balance simply because of the looks, even though the Balance likely performs better. Beosound 2 will in my case complement an A9 to fill the room from the opposite side.
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftemmerm It's all in the dsp and how they drive all the drive units, a lens would be something physics just can't overcome because of the reflection pattern i guess. I totally agree with you that design matters a whole lot and a Beosound 2 just looks superb, but at the end of the day a BS2 is also very capable. What these speakers can do is really stunning and, to me at least, they look very good. They look even better IRL, so I would highly recommend having a look and listen at your local dealer :D
@ftemmerm
@ftemmerm 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mikipedia Sure, don't get me wrong, I think the 28 looks good (especially the bronze version), but the 18 I just very hard to beat in terms of design because it is such a magnificent icon.
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftemmerm oh sure I don't disagree, but the 18's and 28's aren't in the same realm of capabilities. The 28's are much closer to the 50's than the 18's are to the 28's if that makes sense? the 28's are more or less a bl18 with a 19's attached to each side in terms of capabilities, it's really something else!

Hi, I have a few questions. I've been in the local b&o store to listen to this but the guy(s) there were utterly useless with the information so I'm hoping someone here could shed some light. If I get two pairs of these, how would I go setting them up for surround sound? Would that even work without a b&o tv - with a sound processor through normal analogue inputs, because it looks like it takes in only one stereo analogue input per pair? Would it perhaps be possible to use b&o shape speakers as surrounds with beolab28 mains?
@Mikipedia
@Mikipedia 2 жыл бұрын
1: Yes you can set 4 of them up in surround. 2: That can work with a good AV receiver with pre outs. You may have to look at Steve from Soundsheavenly.com for cables (PL to RCA) and depends on the outputs of the AVR you get too. or analogue to what ever the AVR provides for in the pre amp section. 3: yes that would work with a shape too in a similar way. Personally I'd go with 4x28's myself though! Surely a dealer would know this? Who's your local dealer? maybe I can help him/her.

@@Mikipedia Heya, thank you for such a prompt response. Thanks for this, it means a lot. I was expecting I'd need some kind of cable conversion so thanks for the link, I'll keep it in mind if I don't end up splurging for the harmony, but at almost twice the price of the 28's it's a hard thing to swallow. Absolutely agree that the 4x28's would be the thing to go for, but unfortunately there's a certain significant other that's not too fond of the idea... I still have about half a year to slip some subliminal messages here and there so fingers crossed. From the "testing" I was able to do I think the 28's are an absolute bargain. I'm in slovenia but I really wouldn't like to put them on the spot too much, the guy seemed to be a little lost at first but opened up after some prodding so maybe he didn't quite understand what I was asking and it's my fault i wasn't pressing on this too hard, but from what I could understand he was a bit frustrated that this new line isn't as backwards compatible with the old stuff as he would've liked :)

@@lovesickoyster628 Just have another go someday there as see if they warm up a bit. Usually if you go for more than one thing you can get a good package deal, so the more you buy the bigger the discount would be. Also with respects to the harmony, you can get it with last years panel and save a few grand instantly. Unless you do a lot of gaming you really won't notice it, I have a C9 panel and am still very happy with it and don't feel like i need to upgrade it at all(but those are much harder to get now).
@lovesickoyster628
@lovesickoyster628 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mikipedia I think I'll have to go back and listen to the 50's at some point anyway, just out of curiosity. That's a great point on the older panel if that's an option, I have a c7 (2 gen old 55'' that will be way to small for the new living room so i'll have to upgrade anyway) and it's excellent, I don't really have any complaints with some casual ps4 with it too so if I can get a 77'' older panel I'll be totally content. Thanks again for all the help!

@@Mikipedia Sorry for bringing this thread up again. It turns out that unfortunately beolab 28's won't fit as surround speakers into my (new) living room so I'm forced to look for wall mounted alternatives. I've pretty much decided that I'll get the harmony, but I'm a little confused about connectivity - out of the b&o wall mounted speaker options I'm assuming mainly the shape and the level are the ones? Would those both be able to connect to the harmony as surround speakers? I'm assuming the shape wouldn't be a problem because it has a powerlink connector anyway, but would the level work through the wireless link? Unfortunately the official b&o webpage doesn't really offer any details on what exactly is compatible and what isn't. Thanks for all the help!

With Line out from the TV to line in on the speakers you should be able to yes. If you want to ad more than 2 speakers a receiver is probably easier. also check if the line out is volume regulated, that would also make it easier :)
@geraldmcmullon2465
@geraldmcmullon2465 Жыл бұрын
Using DSP pushes all input sources through the DSP and adds latency. So 3.5mm, fibre optics, Bluetooth and wi-fi are not a options from a television. WiSA is the route to using them with video/TV sources for surround sound. You need a WiSA transmitter either in the television or via HDMI eARC to a WiSA transmitter. Beolab 28 have Powerlink (RJ45) 2 channels and Wiseless PowerLink. These by-pass the digital stages and offer stereo from a TV. You need a Powerlink cable with trigger and a RJ45 splitter and CAT5 cable to feed the secondary speaker all available from Steve at Sounds Heavenly. Dealers will tell you it is not possible The digital to analogue chip for headphones from a TV is usually weak. Line level with volume control and the appropriate cable - RCA L/R or 3.5mm to Powerlink

I would have preferred a motorized tweeter vs a motorized curtain.. not a fan of the rounded shape at the bottom.. the cable management appears to be an afterthought.. cost cutting design.. an awkward speaker overall.. B&O can do better.. the latest releases represent a lack of design effort and passion.. leave it in the box and in the store
