I just found out something really interesting. The fact that new hornby engines have flangeless and non pivoting back axles so actually to make them more realistic in a cool way. its trying to represent the Cartazzi axle, which is an axle that doesnt pivot but instead shifts from side to side in its axle boxes to accommodate tight curves. And, since model train tracks are much too tight for the wheel to actually work, they make them flangeless

I absolutely love the massive amount of detail on this engine, where they splashed a bit of glue in the boiler I think it’s because Hornby got some clumsy workers, the detail on the interior of the cab is very well done especially where the cab doors are positioned open as well as the firebox doors, the firebox glow is amazing as well, and can you paint one of your steam locomotives to make it look like it’s weathered with the coal dust, ashes and soot all over the locomotive where the running number is barely visible, the spring buffers on the front of locomotive where they stick, that I’m a bit disappointed on, I’m looking forward on seeing more reviews like this in the future, have a great weekend

14:28 I'm surprised people complained about that on an A4. The trucks under the cab of LNER pacifics actually don't pivot like other trailing wheels because they are Cartazzi axles which have flangeless wheels and a bit of sideways play on the axle but otherwise do not pivot or swivel. I'm not sure about the Lizzies, though.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Ahh really? I never knew that - I'd love to know if the Lizzies were like that! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@davidwhiting17615 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains It's pretty interesting to look at. I once saw a video on KZbin a few few years back with the A1 Locomotive Trust discussing how to Cartazzi axle worked in detail while Tornado was under construction. I can't find it anymore, unfortunately.
@johnd88925 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains Some confusion has come about here. The Cartazzi truck wheels would never be flangless as the flanges impart the sideways play to the axles. Otherwise they would just roll off the rails with disastrous results. It is a toy approach by Hornby to cope with toy radius tracks but having no daylight above the trailing truck. I would hope they found a better way. Even Triang, in 1962, pointed out that the minimum mainline radius used by BR would scale to 9 or 10 feet in 00, so letting users think of the compromises needed when moving away from exact scale. (Source page 21 of Triang First Ten Years book). The A1 trust provides a useful PDF : www.a1steam.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/TOPLINK6.PDF that on page 19, can be seen a diagram of the movement allowed and the flanges can be seen on the wheels. Also has more detail of the design by Francis James Cortazzi prior to his death in 1869 (so he got mis-spelt by sloppiness along the way) but importantly the problems involved with the design. In the 1930s Sir William Stanier was in India investigating the derailments of Indian Pacifics and the role this axle played in it. So would be interesting to find what Sir William Stanier thought of the design. From the P2 trust site can be seen the Cartazzi wheelset with the flanges clearly visible after the tyres, which have the flanges on them are clearly visible : www.p2steam.com/category/construction/page/4/ Perhaps this flangless mis-information came about by someone jumping to the wrong conclusion after seeing contruction views of wheelsets before the wheel tyres had been fitted. The P2 trust give some good information on fitting the tyres if the whole document is read rather than looking at an early picture in isolation. Sam, do you have any contacts that can look at say a preserved A4, A3 , A2 or A1, say at York to try and see any mythical toy approach flangeless trailing wheels? Or ask someone involved with the full size locomotives and the LMS pacifics to give them a good laugh about flangless trailing wheels.

Hi Sam, A cotton swab soaked in a bit of vinegar shouldn’t hurt the paint, try it on a hidden spot & check to see if any color transfers to the the swab. At least you are in the UK, and you can complain to Hornby on a local basis. Being in the US, returning something to the UK isn’t very feasible. Since they use CA fumes to bring up fingerprints, perhaps someone in a crime lab knows a way to remove the CA fog without damage to the original article. Good luck!

It's a beautiful locomotive Sam. It is expensive though. I seen it here for 209 euro. I thought the running board would have been diecast but it certainly has class and the new tooling is obvious in the smooth running. Great review as always. Bye for now basil.

Great review Sam, I have been looking forward to these for a long while. Hope Hornby sort out the careless people with the glue as it's such a shame when you find that sort of thing. I intend to get one at some point, just need to decide which one.

In the first Batches, William Stanier had a lot of GWR influences in the design. Hence the first batches having GWR style slide bars and later ones having conventional LMS ones

She's a beauty. I would buy one but I need a loft and a layout like yours as my current layout is mostly suitable for smaller locomotives. This might change as I am considering a layout rebuild.

I find that when you buy first batch models there is always a few issue, I always wait and then buy. The only reason I preordered the other models is due to them being 100th anniversary models. I find it you go with a tooth pick you can scratch off the white), or with rubbing alcohol you can take a cocktail stick and lightly dab it in the alcohol ( it shouldn’t be damp ). These are two things I do
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
That's unacceptable Marco - when the models are ready for release, they need to be perfect! I didn't fancy trying to remove the marks - too frightened of damaging it more! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hey Sam, amazing video as always! That truly is a wonderful locomotive, she really looks stunning down and running! :D Quick Question, have you heard about the new "Hunt Coupling" close magnetic couplers at all? They look really good, adds a good amount of realism to the coaches!

It certainly looks nice, LMS livery is one of the best, but that might just be my bias as a midlander, but the model, i would say is really flippin' good, i like it

I like a Princess with a lovely rear too Sam, and I think it's down to the builder's plates adding that extra visible touch in detail. Hopefully, the rest of the models are in a better production state with no glue marks or buffer issues. Tho yes the overall appearance is marvelous compared to the 2004 (Ramey's BMRC 9th) version of this loco, which I also have in my collection as a Limited Edition. The price will be an issue for some modelers and I think I'll wait until the locos come down another £15 in a sale. I'll only pay over £160 for a limited edition or train pack now, as I am not able to work due to illness. Great review and I hope the motor will stay in its housing for you, if not tape it or black tack in from moving. I'd say this version of the 7P princess should easily win the best model for the Rear of the Year award... LOL.

22:42 they were more powerful than the diesels that replaced them on the wcml
@davidwhiting17615 жыл бұрын
@@scooby2142 Although the Lizzies probably developed more horsepower at rail than a Class 40 (Class 40s producing about 1550hp at rail and a Lizzie producing probably 2000+hp at rail). It's not uncommon for steam locomotives to produce more hp than diesels while diesels produce more tractive effort. Even here in the states NKP 765 produces just slightly more HP than even our modern diesels. Think of it this way: a diesel, which typically has a large amount of tractive effort, will outpull a steam locomotive. A steam locomotive, usually producing more HP than a diesel, will be able to outrun a diesel.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Very interesting discussion! I think that may have been true for some Coronations though! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@thorswrath91515 жыл бұрын
@@davidwhiting1761 That really depends on the locomotives. A NP A3 had much more tractive effort and hp then the same diesels that replaced them, same with most northern types. Do not get me started on NW Y6B, NW A class, or any of the other large articulated locos. Big boy had less tractive effort then a y6b and still has more then any single diesel ever produced. Why diesels replaced steam was ALL cost. Cheaper to build, fuel, and maintain. Took 15min to start up as opposed to 8hrs for the larger steam locomotives.

Very good review of an impressive model.Yes those glue marks would annoy me at the price.Your vids can be very informative and since I very rarely buy online I always inspect at my Model Shop which is a great shop.Whenever I buy online I always worry about damage,quality and the hassle of sending it back.I must say though it’s a beautiful model
