the new multi-tool runs at a low speed until you start cutting then it speeds up. This is to keep the noise and vibration down.

The old multi tool system is called "ois". The new one having starlock max is because the longer blades have a 3° oscillation as compared to older models oscillating alot less than 3°.. therefore faster cutting but also more leverage on the tool.

Hi thanks for the video - some advice for novice DIY'er (think Kenny Everett)..I need to sand about x12 door frames which have thick old paint on. Thinking of a multi-tool vs detail sander as I'll no doubt use other functions in future. What Makita 18v tool would you recommend as I've bought into the LXT family. Many Thanks

Hi Mathew thanks for reaching out, to be honest I don’t rate multitools in regards there sanding capacity, the sanding pad is to small and these tools run at such high olisating speed in my experience it rips the hooks and loops of the backing pad so the sand paper doesn’t stick to it, iv got the dbo 180 random orbit sander which is good and the dbo 480/ 481 looks really good also ( if you go on the tools and stuff KZbin channel he’s recently reviewed the latest makita sanders including the latest palm sanders) so In summary since you have quite a few door frames to do I’d say go for the new makita palm sander with the square sheet arrangement ie the dbo 480 or 481 and just use the multi tool for cutting, hope this has been some help sir 🤟🤟

@UKTOOLTALK

Oh hi dipsy funny you should say that, the other day I noticed that the pin was a bit weird, when you pushed it in to lock the blade it was tight to push right at the last few millimetres (right where it needs to Easy to push the pin tight onto the blade) and then it's a bit tight pulling the pin back out when you want to change the blade, it's happened so recently I haven't had time to investigate, iv not had the blade coming loose or not being loose tho, in a whole tho I'm stoked with the tool 🤘🤘

Great to hear from you sir, thanks for the comment, mmm good point about the dtm 51 loosing Teeth easier, in my humble opinion it seems to be related to the spring getting worn, with the dtm 50 having the Allen key on it you can crank it tight, I think if the blades not on tight it snaps the teeth off, iv seen the dtm 51 make a very loud screaming noise which I think is related to the blade not being tight enough but you can't adjust the clamping down bit apart from pressing the holding pin tight against the blade when pushing down the lock arm, keep it random my friend 🤘🤘

@@UKTOOLTALK Thanks for the quick reply mate, I'm a painter and decorator, I often use my corded fein for sanding windows when I'm working off ladders but obviously the cord is a bit of a pain. Oh right iv not got a sanding plate for my multi tool,I used to have one when I had one of the earlier models and I found that the multi tool oscillating tore all the little hooks of the sanding plate that attached to the tool in no time and then it wouldn’t sand anything because the sheets wouldn’t stick,anyway this was years ago so there are probably better sanding plates now,yes it’s a super expensive tool,check out my video of the new makita sheet sander which also has a bit about the small round sanding disc makita sander,all lxt 18v 🤟🤟

Oh hi Tony thanks for watching and commenting, mmmm good question, the body of the new multitool is totally different, allot chunkier so I don't think it will sit right, iv looked online and I don't think you can get that inlay yet but it will come out at some point I assume, with it being so new a tool there is a bit of lag with spares and extra bits, iv been trying to buy a extra locking pin so I can adhapt one to work with the other pinned blades but I can't buy one yet, maybe use foam inlay for now?, I'm afraid iv got all my tools loose in macpacks, it works best for me and I'm not really genned up on inlays but I understand that some people like them so it stops everything getting knocked about which is cool, that's all the help I can give you friend apart from I really hope the on off switch doesn't give you any bother, mine is still really tight and I might have to get the clam shell to bits to see what's going on, I know I maybe should send it back but I'm sure I can sort it, Iv used to only a few times and I'm so stunned how good it is that I'm a bit forgiving about the switch, enjoy 🤘🤘

On my Makita brushless angle grinder the slide switch works a bit differently. You slide it to switch it on but then to turn it off you have to kind of press the rear of the switch and it recoils back and turns the tool off. I wonder it that is the same for this new multi-tool. If it is then that would explain why you're struggling to slide the switch back. I'd love to know if that is the case because I'm eyeing up this multitool.

Great question my friend, you've just earned a star 🌟, well now I wish you were right sir, If the new multitool did have this kind of toggle switch it would be allot better, I'm a massive makita fan but I don't know what goes through there heads sometimes!!, I would make perfect sense to me and to you to have the same toggle switch that they put on the grinder but oooh nooo they put on a sticky one!!!, heres hoping it frees up or I will have to take this bad boy apart and sort it, tell you what tho I used it properly for the first time this week, hoooly shhhit!!! It's good, like twice as good as the previous model, I was stunned!!!, sooo I still rate it and recommend it, oh hey I rung up makita UK today to get a replacement locking pin for my new multitool, no good they won't be releasing parts for a few months, why do I need another locking pin you ask?, is there a problem?, yes and no, I want to adapt another locking pin by making it longer and make a star lock to pin connector adhaptor so I can use my old blades!!!, watch this space 🤘🤘

@@UKTOOLTALK Thanks for replying. Let me know how you get on with your blade adaptor project. I was thinking about getting the previous model until I saw this new one but then paused when I saw it uses Starlock blades. I currently have a corded Parkside multitool so have quite a few OIS blades. It's about 7 years old and still working fine so I'm in no rush to replace it. But If your adaptor works then that would be pretty cool. Also, I don't know why Makita are still using a retaining pin. Take a look at the Bosch. The blades just snap in place and the lever releases them. Looks so quick and easy.

@@Patrick-857 I thought that might be the case. I had a look at Scott Brown's review. He went in a bit deeper. Thanks to the pin on the Makita it can use all Starlock blades which includes Starlock Plus and Starlock Max. Bosch's quick release system only works on Starlock and Starlock Plus, not the Max. Considering that bit of fact I guess the Makita has got one up.

@UKTOOLTALK

Hi friend in my experience the main reason the pins snap off is when the blades aren't clamped hard enough onto the tool, so when you change blades if you have the dtm 51 keep the holding bolt tight against the blade when you pull the locking arm back over, if there is any play between the blade and the pin plate it can cause allot of tiny vibration which makes a screaming noise and can shear of the pins, soooo as long as everything is nice and tight it will be good, if it's the dtm50 you need to make sure the Allen key plate is kept tight at all time (ie checked allot) hope this has been some help and enjoy using this awesome tool 🤘🤘

Hi Tim thanks for reaching out,you know what you and good folks like you are the real stars of my daft little channel ie watching and commenting and subscribing, in regards the multitool yes I still love it!!, I don’t use it every day but when I do use it it always suprises me how powerful it is, how quiet it is and how little vibration there is!, secondly if you look online there is a plastic adhaptor that clips on the multitool so you can hook it up to a vacuum,there has been some comments online about a little metal component in the head of the multitool which can break,now then iv never had this problem and making my best guess this happens because some folk don’t know how to use a multitool properly,what I mean by that they push on to hard instead of letting the tool do the work and it puts the inner workings under to much strain,some of the crucial internal metal components are made of powder casted metal instead of forged or machined pieces, now then this is the controversial bit, yes probably theses crucial components should be made of forged or machined parts but I recon if they made them that way it would make the tool maybe a third more expensive, in my opinion this new multitools price point is to expensive at the moment and should be about £160/70 ish and I’m sure it has put some people of buying this new multitool because of it’s expensive price even tho I think it’s allot better than the previous model, anyway hope this had been some help and check out the videos about the makita 18v sander and the adhaptor I made for the new multitool 👍🤟

@UKTOOLTALK
@UKTOOLTALK 2 жыл бұрын
Mmmm jake very good question, I can't answer this one but I'll make a wild guess if you like, could be a patent issue or maybe having the pin makes the manufacturing easier, this is a long shot but bear with me, the tool less locking system used by fein seems allot more complicated and might be more liable to faults and I feel (this is just a wild hunch) that the pin operation on the makita and the way the blade locate on the machine makes a tighter fit between the tool and the blade and then less vibration, anyway what do I know I'm just a lowly plumber, thanks for watching and commenting 🤘🤘

Oh dear, weight comparison once with a battery in the DTM51 and without a battery in the DTM52 does not make much sense (but what is 200g, depending on the small battery or the large battery, it also makes the difference). And since the new tool still needs a locking pin for "Starlock", that's a joke for me.

@@UKTOOLTALK I have no idea what you want to tell me, except nonsense that has nothing to do with my answer. At least I don't like marketing when a Strarlock machine is advertised, which then does not have a fully automatic Starlock locking device ... for me, if a Starlock locking device is part of it, regardless of whether normal / plus / max, so then a locking pin is still required , is a NoGo (for whatever reason Bosch / Fein does not issue the full license). But ok, no matter which tool some people are satisfied with, the main thing is that there is a BL motor in it.
