The dewalt one has a better blade change, we use makita dewalt as well as Milwaukee, but by far we reach for the dewalt it has a handle more comfortable than the rest

I love my DeWalt one. My boss has the millwaukee, which does have more power but he's burned up 2 of them this past year. I'm still on the same DeWalt that I bought. I also like the variable trigger much better and the ability to sit it upright on the battery. I hate hate hate the way millwaukee slants their battery which makes it awkward to sit down sometimes when your working in a tight spot

great comparison vid man! I had to do some deep research on the whole Starlock thing. What's the difference between Starlock and Starlock plus/max? so it has to do with size/length/thickness of the blades. the plus/max are bigger, longer, and thicker, and theoretically they would place too much load on the lighter multitools that only use regular Starlock. So they changed up the connection point to prevent oopsies from occurring, and burning out your lighter tool. Of course if you pick this tool up it's irrelevant as it takes all 3 blades. Also apparently the 3d section of the blade puts the load on the heavy metal cylinder of the tool instead of the load being on the blade and the spindle. So safer and stronger, at least in theory. I say theory since I haven't personally tested it, just looked stuff up. But I love the feel and comfort of my new Makita MT. I agree with your recommendation. If you've already invested a ton in another tool, especially one with OIS blades (or Dewalts proprietary stuff), stick with that. If your buying your first one, or looking to upgrade, Id definitely go with the Makita. Starlock seems to be the big one when it comes to compatibility, since most the manufacturers are going in that direction, including Festool. And since Festool does it, it's gotta be good! (jk hehe, but hey Festools are great stuff, just saying).
@chrisford84033 жыл бұрын
The majority of my tools are Makita these days. I waited for the longest time for them to come out with a brushless MT to the point that I gave up and went with the Milwaukee 12v; it's pretty great by the way. I don't understand how they are having so much trouble coming up with a multitool that's on par with their other stuff. They keep missing the mark. And why go Starlock! Everyone else has the other style/universal. If you're breaking blade prongs then you're probably using the wrong tool.
@clutteredchicagogarage2720 Жыл бұрын
Did you go with the brushless M12 or the brushed one? I have an M18, but I wish I got a smaller M12 or something else to give me more control for precision plunge cuts. I agree with everything you said about this Makita starlock. I have Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools as well as Makita 18V tools. I generally prefer Makita because I think they have better ergonomics, which let me get better precision and accuracy with my work, but I think Makita could do a better job with their multi-tools. I want a compact, lightweight and ergonomic OIS multi-tool. I may also check out one of the Milwaukee M12s.

Definitely, and it uses the standard buy anywhere blades. Unlike this stupid design, which uses the "try to find them anywhere if you can" blade design. Of all the things to change on a multi tool, the blade fixing it the last thing you'd touch. Milwaukee seems to excel at this part of their designs. They always look at the most common used fixings and accessories, and then design their tools to accept them. Their M12 mini rotary tool is a great example. It fits 99% of all Dremel accessories, so Milwaukee don't need to make these, as they are already covered.

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Since Bosch is quite evidently in the business of selling consumables and not power tools, I would not be suprised if they were incentivising the use of their patents vs collecting patent pennies. Makita is implementing a hybrid of Starlock and the previous Fein pin mechanism (neither of which are noticeably faster nor slower than the other in real world use) and the Starlock trademark is right on the tool. It could be that it's cheaper to make, it could also be a design decision based on user feedback. The toolless starlock mechanism is not "all that". It's more of an obstacle when you need to angle the blade but you are not quite sure what angle you need it at until you get there. It's a lot easier to move the blade around to each setting before locking it in with the pin than dealing with the toolless clamp mechanism. I hope I'm making sense.

With OIS you are limited with blade length because the pins can't take it and shear off, this is why Starlock and others were invented.

The performance of this tool and the overall ergonomics seem good. With that said, I think I'm not going to buy it because I already have a lot of OIS blades, and, more importantly, there are a lot of options for getting various kinds of OIS blades for relatively cheap both online and at some discount hardware tools in my area (Chicago, USA). I also don't love the fact that you have to remove the blade retention pin when you load the blades. I guess it's not that big of a deal. I own a Milwaukee M18 multi-tool. It was the first multi-tool I've ever owned. I don't really love the ergonomics. It's too long, and because the battery is mounted at an angle, you cannot stand it up on the battery. The M18 batteries are a lot bigger and heavier than Makita 18V batteries, which makes the tool heavier and awkward to hold. I only use multi-tools as precision tools. I used one last weekend to cut out a rectangle in a builtin wall cabinet at my mother-in-law's house to install a low-voltage wall plate with an ethernet jack. In these applications, I want my cut lines to be precise and clean. I don't need my multi-tool to be very powerful. I want it to be lightweight and short so I can get a good grip close to the blade and control the cut as much as possible. Since it's really easy to overcut corners with multi-tools, I like to plunge-cut a bit further from the corners and then finish these kinds of cuts in the corners with a thin hand saw. For my wall plate, I used Milwaukee's compact hack saw to cut the last 5mm at the corners, and I was very happy with my results on this little job because my cuts were very precise. Milwaukee's blade loading system is actually really good. They use a lock lever plus a screw-down pin that doesn't drop out. You just unlock the lever, loosen the screw a bit by hand, pull out the OIS blade if it has an opening on the end, and then reverse. I think it's just as fast as starlock. But the weight of the M18 tool and the ergonomics during operation aren't great. I want a multi-tool that's lighter and shorter than my M18 with a better grip. I want a brushless motor with some good anti-vibration control to make it easier for me to precisely guide the tool along my cut lines. I think I'll probably just wait for either Milwaukee to release a more-compact M12 brushless multi-tool or maybe for Makita to release an OIS version of this tool with some small improvements.

I wish I could find the DTM50 (XMT01) in the United States. I don't like the 02 at all and I don't like the price of starlock blades for "rough work." I do have the Bosch GOP 30 starlock corded model.
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL3 жыл бұрын
the DTM50 is actually the XMT02. The 51 is the 03 and the 52 will presumably be the 04.

I didn't get a blade :(. Paid $240 out the door with our 25% sales tax here in Norway. I also saw that there was some dust extraction solution in the manual. My old 51 model came with a triangle sanding pad and dust extraction solution. New one did not.

Another interesting tool review bro! I'm Makita tools mainly. But hated there multi tool so I went with the new Milwaukee M12 anti vib multi tool. It's light and small and very grunty for a 12v tool. Beats my dad's Dewalt 18v. Also it has a magnet to hold the blade on while changing blades. That new makita looks rather clumsy to be honest.

Who invented the oscillating multi tool? The German's did ,to be precise the Company was Fein ,still in existence, and the year was 1967.

So those 2 makita impact drivers are ready for a Wranglestar type head to head 😁😅

I hope they release a non-starlock version of this tool. I like everything but the blade requirement.
@OmegaGamingNetwork3 жыл бұрын
It is only a matter of time until generic starlocks start appearing. Once that happens, I'll probably replace mine. Until then, obviously sticking with the old style. I mean really this is a fairly niche tool for me so the couple of complaints the new one fixes aren't that big a deal.

The starlock max blades are longer. I’ve got the Bosch 18v which only takes starlock plus and there have been a couple of times when those blades didn’t reach where I wanted to go. Would have bought the Mkaita 52 if it had been out.
@marsdeimos43013 жыл бұрын
I've got it too and have the same problem. Now that Fein, Festool and Makita all have starlock max cordless tools, I hope Bosch GmbH get their shit together and come out with their own starlock Max cordless. Perhaps with the biturbo motor, that would blow everyone else out of the water. It's not like they couldn't...

Starlock etc was invented because with long blades the pins shear off OIS system.

I still perfer Bosch multi tool. Slim enough and great grip. I used to have makita old Multi until I use Bosch one. Multi tool is handy to small area job so the narrow head is very important
@sadiporter29663 жыл бұрын
they are charging £200 for this in the uk, the dtm51z costs £115. A huge price increase and no blade in the box and a poor blade change mechanism compared to the fein. Makita haven't announced a corded version of this so far, i wonder whether they will release one, it would make the rear narrower. The newish milwaukee 18v and 12v have low vibration and a higher ~4.0 degrees cut. Would be great to see a side-by-side comparison of those compared to this new makita to see the noise level and vibration comparison and also cut speed although i'm pretty sure milwaukee will cut faster.

It's literally using a Fein mechanism. There are big cons to the toolless starlock clamping mechanism. It depends on what you use it for, however. I'm happy for toolless starlock when I'm burning through scraper blades. I'm cursing at it when I'm in a cupboard, making a cutout and am fighing with the starlock mechanism while trying to set the right angle.

@@robertrada6040 Exactly. My Fein has the same pin and lever mechanism. And I bought it years ago before multitools were everywhere. It's not a new thing.

Vibration is the key with these tools and so it's the Fein every time . I have white finger as a result of using lesser tools. The Fein has a floating head and so reduces vibration massively and still is totally efficient. The best blades are the curved Bosch Starlock these are very smooth at cutting and significantly reduce chatter, that's my system. Or just buy Japanese pull cut saws! silently brilliant! not for cutting metal of course....! Great comparison video and multi-cutters are essential in some situations.
