most places in this land got a brand new name
when the white folk in their tall ships came
whatever places were called before
they weren't called that anymore
it was kamay but now it's botany bay
it's because of joseph banks it's named that way
Dharawal people were already living there
but what they called their home nobody cared
james cook just wrote down new names on his maps
that's what you get to do in your pommy captain's hat
even though he saw people along the shore
but those folk didn't own their land anymore
some places are getting their old names back
some white folk sure do hate that
they still call it ayres rock not uluru
that's the sort of thing those folk do

I’m not sure which is more tragic, renamed places or places still bearing their native names but with the people that named them that way 3:10 erased. We sure have plenty of those latter here in the Pacific NW.

Inspired original Pa. The best we seem to be able to do here is remove derogatory names from official use on maps and things like that. At least it is a step in the right direction

there has been a trend to give prominent places there original names back here in oz - with some push back - k'gari is an example - it was renamed as fraser island - the story of that name is worth checking and i believe there was a movie about it - a lot of places here do have aboriginal names - like woongarrah where i live (but was unable to find what it means) - thank you for the listen
