I think Hornby, along with their various brands; Corgi, Airfix and Scalextric, are already in trouble. Just over a year ago they appointed none other than Lyndon Davies, the owner of Oxford Diecast/Rail, as their CEO, most likely as his company has been going from strength to strength whereas Hornby Hobbies has been in decline for some time. This most likely being a desperate attempt to get the company back in the game. As far as I know however the two companies are still completely independent of each other.

If hornby still exists this time next year I'll be quite surprised...
@Steamer965 жыл бұрын
@@mitchellhogg4627 Yeah the reason why I think hornby is trash is because I bought a frame for a Gresley teak and it arrived in an envelope smashed and broken. Then when I ordered another one one of the tool boxes fell off in the box. To me that screams JUNK!

Amazing review Sam! This is going to be a tough loco to beat this year I reckon. I was thinking about models I might want to save up for a purchase this year and I think this one has been added to the list of ones I am considering immediately. It amazes me how great of a loco this is for such a reasonable price. If Oxford Rail continue to make models this good, I think the Hornby and Bachmann will have no other choice than to follow suit and join in on making their locos with diecast and an affordable price tag. A very good thing for the hobby. Keep up the great work Sam!

I still need to get one of these - They're gorgeous things and the only reason I haven't yet is the fact that, currently, I'm making use of several decent offers on SR Locos (which, given about 90% of my stock is Stock is Southern and the rest is LT is sort of logical). Once I've got myself an E4 I'll be getting an N7 (LNER Black to match my modelling period). As for haulage, eight wouldn't be a big deal for a real one of these (I think they were utilised on trains formed from pairs of Quint-Art sets, that is five-car sets that were articulated, and certainly on pairs of Quad-Art sets, which would be eight total) so it's good that the model matches the prototype in that regard. If I had a better reason to get one (I.E. If I didn't model almost exclusively Southern prototypes) I'd already have one. As it stands I'm planning a London-area layout to justify one! Amazing in all areas - Just want Oxford to do a few ex-LBSCR and ex-SECR locos and they'll have my money. What mystifies me about Oxford vs. Hornby is the fact that they share C.E.Os and clearly collaborate (Hornby's 1:76 scale road vehicles are generally made by Oxford, not Corgi and Oxford's. Buildings have been incorporated into Hornby's range) so how on earth can such a difference in price and quality be justified?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I can highly recommend it mate - they're truly excellent models! I bet you're right - I can see these hauling more than 8! Thanks a lot for the info, Cheers, Sam :)

WOW!!!! There is not one thing I do not like about this engine!!!! You got a REAL good deal on that engine, and I can't find anything wrong with it either. I LOVE the elegant gray paint livery, the crisp details, the pipe work, the red connecting rods, the painted boiler and cab details, the fact that the 2 rear trailing wheel flaw from the Adam's Radial 4-4-2 Tank engine has been fixed on this engine, the smooth running, and it's powerful!!! MY God, I'm blown away, and this is just the first engine for 2019 which is not good because this engine is gonna be VERY tough to beat!!!! You're gonna need to find one heck of an engine to beat this. I can't stop admiring this beautiful little engine. I'll most definitely get one when I can. I can't wait to see more of what's to come. :) Beautiful engine! :)

An incredible way to start with this year's reviews, Sam. The N7 class was a fantastic model, its something to celebrate how good it is. They really put effort on the quality with many parts of the body being metal, making it very heavy. Its also a very good performer, 8 coaches isn't easy for many locos, and doesn't sees to struggle. The attention of detail is great too, the Worl War II White livery is very attrative looking, and its amazing they managed to make a good detailed cab, despite not being very visible one. And obviously, the value is suprisingly good, being a model that could be more expensive. This proves that Oxford really takes care for their costumers, being able to sell their models for a great price, wich is very afortable for many people. Its a great model to start, similar to the P class from last year and its ranking will be very difficult to pass, but time will tell. Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and I'll see you in the next video.

I would think that the expense on some of these brands is just that, they're brands. Hornby, Bachmann, Märklin etc are like the brand clothing of model railways; it might be made in china for 10 bob a pair but they'll charge you another 100 for the name alone. Since Oxford Rail isn't an established well-known brand, they don't have that in their favor. Or maybe they're just realy nice blokes, I don't know. Excellent model, regardless!

Summary for the “main” manufactures of these model railways. Hornby - Steam locos in the railways range (and a few diesels) are good quality with reasonable prices! Sometimes the model is too god for the price! Bachmann - large company and does occasionally make wonderful locos, no matter what type. However most of them are overpriced. Hattons - As a whole, they know how to bring our attention to a model, whether we hate it or not. And occasionally make really nice models which are very worth the money. Oxford Rail - Not a very known company-which is possibly why they are trying to make good quality models for the lower price-but they, sometimes, get it right! Most of the of the other companies, like Lima, are made from the same origin so I won’t talk about them.

This locomotive reminds me of Ryan who is from Thomas The Tank Engine which he appeared in Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure. I also never noticed the wheel arrangement on this train when its a 0-6-2 meaning this train has 0 front wheels 6 driving wheels and 2 small rear wheels.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
haha yeah it looks a lot like Ryan! Look up my N2 video - that's Ryan! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Picked up one of these in LNER Black for £92 from one my local train fair earlier today. Was £95 but the seller knocked off £3 for me. Excited to get it running!

Its a pity you don't score out of 10. I think it would have got 10 in all the categories you gave it 5. and 9.5 where you gave 4.5 Not forgetting the cab detail, are we? Well done Oxford rail.

Thanks a lot Sam! Believe me, that's a high score coming from me - I try to be as unforgiving as possible with the scoring! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I also agree that this locomotive is very cheap for it's price tag. It's excellently detailed and worth every penny and pound! Good review Sam; Well done.

The first loco I gave a 10/10 score! The LNER Black livery mine is in looks fantastic and it is the best slow speed runner I own!

Hey Sam!!! I would like to know how often should i clean my tracks????????? Anyways great review as always!!
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest as and when you need it! When locos start to run badly, I'd do it! I personally clean mine every month, but vacuum them every week - seems to keep things running well! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

What a beautiful little loco! Although at this moment I both don't have the space and can't afford to have a set up (what happens when you love horse riding!) I don't have one, thus have to enjoy yours as my own, but when I become to buggered to ride I do aspire to have one and I should like to have an N7, great vid! 👌
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha that's fair enough mate - this is a little less messy than horses mind you ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam. Unfortunately, I'm not so taken with the wartime grey livery and what makes it a little worse is that the yellow running number on the side of the tank(s) is not outlined or shadowed in black as it is on the rear buffer beam. Talking of which, there is a marked absence of rivets on the rear buffer beam and I wonder whether this was the case with the real thing. I'm not sure whether you may be able to make an out-of-hand judgement on which is the best manufacturer of model trains, coaches and trucks/wagons as there are quite a few factors to take into account, such as price, etc. I suppose to cloud the issue further may be the fact that perhaps one manufacturer takes the lead with one model, then another manufacturer with a later/different model; I'd love to hear your views. A possible suggestion for a video: I personally would love to see a more detailed coverage of your model room - where you do the maintenance on your rolling stock, a closer look at your setup of track and white background for the detailed view of the models you review. Do you use more than one camera? Sometimes there is a rather "narrow" field of view, perhaps due to lighting issues. I suppose that most of your viewers are more interested in the trains themselves, but there may be one or two others who would like to see the things I have just mentioned.

That's fair enough Paul - it's not for everyone! It's quite difficult to say, well worth looking up some photos! I do have a lot of behind the scenes videos for members, if you ever wanted to consider joining? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I might buy one of these. I don't even model in OO, I have N.... and I don't even live in the UK, I live in the US. This thing would look great on a mantlepiece or in display case.

I will say my Janus 060 diesel made by Oxford rail for golden valley models is pretty well detailed and weighty lighter nights are coming and hopefully I can start playing with it. This model also looks great.

A lovely model. The real engines had small wheels to give them excellent acceleration and the model seems to reproduce this quality of the N7s working out of Liverpool Street station, London.

I just went to their website and they have a br black sound version n7 for £219.95. I think it's a mistake, though

That could be about right - on their site it's the RRP, and DCC sound decoders cost around £100 - sounds spot on! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

The better prices will also be better for rail modellers here in Australia such as myself seeing how the UK pound to Australian dollar exchange rate is absolutely ridiculous. Very fantastic model and price. Great video Sam

Just got one of these off eBay , superb and runs fantastic...but at high speed it is noisy like an electic drill running. Nice at the speeds I run at though so it doesn't worry me, but is this normal for this Loco ?
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Great to hear that Malcolm! Mine is a little noisier at high speed, I wouldn't say like a drill though - maybe you could give the bearings a touch of oil?? Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I wasn't going to buy one of these in fact when I saw them I did not even stop to look, But now I have just ordered on after seeing what you get for your money I would be mad not to buy one, I already own two of their Dean goods which I am more than happy with now I understand how to get round a weakness in their wiring.

Very nice, although I am not really one for cab detail, the detail in this one is superb. Bit difficult for me to see the yellow number on the gray, maybe that was to confuse the enemy; German spies disguised as train spotters.
