I really like Black Star, even though it's a little bit of a harrowing listen. Thanks for sharing.

I've just broken the seal on 'Blackstar'. Not impressed with the booklet, which is really hard to read. I'll give it a proper listen in the next couple of days. Thanks for commenting.

Hey Carl, those CDs you purchased at those prices are unbelievable. Even if you don't like half of them ( that includes The Fucking Champs ) it's still a win. I bought Blackstar when it came out after Bowie's death and it's a bit different, has a jazz feel to it. Nice description on each buy.

Hi Tom. You're right, I'm not taking much of a risk at these prices. I happily pay 50 pence or less just to get a brand new jewel case. By venturing out of my usual comfort zone, I may find something I really like. I broke the seal on 'Blackstar' yesterday, and need to find some time to properly listen. Cheers!

If you're forced to watch TV adverts, you can play the game 'spot the vinyl record'. Advertisers think it's 'cool' and 'aspirational' to show a bearded hipster (or similar) with records in the background. It's laughable really. I love vinyl, but common-sense prevails when prices keep going up and quality drops because there aren't enough reputable pressing plants. Also, a lot of the CDs I find aren't even available on vinyl.

@@carltweed942 Same is true in newly made drama series. About 5 or 6 years ago, sellers appeared on eBay listing job lots of vinyl, for example something like 8 LPs for £20 - but just random LPs, no indication what you might receive! There was always a picture of some 70s style furniture, a Rega type deck and some propped up LPs. Laughably, these job lots were actually selling - but the feedback for these sellers usually included some pretty disappointed punters! Young trendies discovering Des O'Connor for the first time - priceless really. My nephew is 48 and he told me his daughter (22) has gone all retro. I thought he meant she'd got into vinyl, but no, she's been playing my nephew's CDs. When he was growing up, I was the uncle with all the LPs - now he has LPs and I have thousands of CDs. Amusing really.

Anything ECM is worth a try particularly later ones as less dated. You find really interesting CDs Carl. To my Shane I've not even heard Black Star. Bowie statue here in Aylesbury is horrible actually and links to him here were rather threadbare and tenuous. One of my mate's dads shared a flat with Bowie in London. I should really go and interview him. He took the photo for the space oddity album cover if you know it. Cheers. Martin.

Hi Martin. I've not got much at all on ECM, but I know the label has got a good reputation. I bought 'The Next Day' when it came out, but I never got round to getting 'Blackstar'. I'll be giving it a listen in the next day or so. I didn't know that there was a Bowie statue in Aylesbury. I suppose the connection is him playing at Friar's on a number of occasions. The best music-related statue I've seen is Billy Fury in Liverpool. Are you meaning the original 1969 cover when it was called 'David Bowie'? I love that album.

Hi Rob. I'm lucky that I'm within a few miles of a few market towns/villages where I can usually find some CDs in the charity shops. It would be interesting to see some of the best ones you've found recently. P.S. Thanks also for doing the Vinyl Tag for the last three years, and managing to pitch the questions so it attracted new people to the VC. You definitely left on a high.

You got some awesome deals. Black Star is a sad listen. I love Haircut 100! So cool to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor! I am a fan. IMHO, that National album is that last great release from them. These are fine purchases, Carl 👍

Hi Brian. I'm bracing myself prior to listening to 'Blackstar'; Bowie was my first musical hero. For me, Nick Heyward is one of the UK's best pop songwriters. I can't say I'm a fan of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but I do appreciate their sound. I also have a CD by one of their side-projects - Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - which I picked up ages ago.

Hi JT. I don't know who was on Vol. 1 of the Pete Seeger tribute, but Vol. 2 has a stellar cast - a mix of American and UK artists. Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Steve Earle, and Arlo Guthrie & Pete Seeger also caught my eye. 'Boxer' was my introduction to the National and the only one of their albums which I instantly liked. I really enjoyed your personal list of best American acts, which I watched on my TV. If I was a betting man, I would have bet the shirt off my back on the Grateful Dead being number one. Thank goodness I'm not a betting man then!

I had to have restraint, Carl. I sometimes wanted to put The Dead at #1 , I opted to take my heart out of the equation and recognize the greatness of the Beach Boys, Byrds, and REM ! Besides the National, as you know, there are so many fine indie bands from around the same era as " Boxer" I will have a listen to Vol. 2 tribute ( Pete Seeger ).

You really know me, as I do love the songs of Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia ! A good section of the American songbook, whether The Dead were performing them or other artists doing fine covers of their songs !

Blackstar is a nice find. I virtually never find that Cd out in the wild. I always figured it would show up, but it really hasn't. That's a good Stevie Nicks comp and what a price. Wow - some great finds and what prices 50p.

Hi Alan. Regarding 'Blackstar', I suspect the record label manufactured way too many copies and hence it's starting to turn up in charity shops. You've been finding some amazing stuff yourself at your Sunday flea market. The UK equivalent is the car boot sale. I can't get up early enough for those; plus I find more than enough stuff at charity shops anyway. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm gradually working my way through these. I did a mini-review of Clinic's 'Winchester Cathedral' in an earlier video. I've also got the first and fourth of their CDs, which I picked up at a charity shop, but I've not got round to listening to them yet. I might include them in a future video. It's so often the case that a debut album is the best.

Hi Harris. I've checked and the Cadets' 'Stranded In The Jungle' is a cover of the original by the Jayhawks. As you say, it was then covered by the New York Dolls. I'll pay particular attention to the track by Dolly Cooper when I play the CD. I love a good Doo Wop comp.
