Sir, Paperboat is a different Product all together. They have created a new product which was not available in the market. Same goes for Fogg. The product is different. No gas. Now as per the product they obviously have to communicate in that manner only. I think the better examples could be coke and thumbs up. Surf excel and tide. These are not different to one another. They have created just by positioning themselves in a different manner. If I'm buying Fogg I know it contains no gas. When I'm buying surf excel I'm not sure as a consumer how it is different from tide. They both wash clothes. But I'm aware of the message they communicate...like for surf excel Daag achhe hain, for tide whiteness. Agar main surf excel kharedunga toh it doesn't mean ki mere kapde mein brightness nahi ayegi. But agar main Fogg ki jageh koi dusra deo kharedunga toh mjhe kam spray milenge. Toh yahan Product hi different hai.

Thanks for sharing such wonderful examples. You are right. In this video we have discussed brand positioning irrespective of how unique the product is. Even if the product is very unique, but not positioned correctly, it might not do that well. I remember launching Lipton Ice Tea, when I was in HUL - the product did not do well because of various reasons, one of them was it was not well positioned in the mind of the consumers. Consumers knew it was healthy but was not clear when to have Lipton Ice Tea - was it a substitute for Cola or some re-hydration drink or some energy drink??? Something similar happened to Blue, an unique flavoured water launched by Danone Narang, later Narang group separated from Danone and relaunched the brand as Ocean with proper positioning and Virat Kohli as the brand ambassador. To Sum-up, uniqueness in a product does not guarantee proper positioning in the mind of the consumer, it has to be positioned properly.

@@skilltowill Absolutely correct sir. Consumer has very limited mind space and a brand needs to be clear what associations it wants to built for its consumer. Crystal clear positioning and communication. Great example of Lipton tea. Thanks a lot sir. It was great having such insightful discussion with you :)

I am kaushik from wipro consumer. We are unable to establish our Santoor brand in kolkata metro area. Repeatedly our products getting flop except handwash. Sir , my question is how to increse off take from retail???

There are many parameters that impact placement and offtake like - right product in right outlet, category visibility, secondary visibility, retailer communication, market intelligence etc. To sum up - You have understand the root cause of failure and address that.

As a consumer I'd say: Dettol has the biggest share of mind for their positioning - kills 99.9% germs. Which highlights it's product usp. Lifebuoy has tried to replicate that. Palmolive has positioned themselves as the luxury exquisite handwash for upper class. Santoor has not positioned itself in any particular way I believe. Which would make consumers choose it over a Dettol placed in a sku beside it.
