In your opinion, in terms of looks, taking care of the leather, versatility and how classic each leather is, do you think black hatch grain leather or black country grain leather is better for chelsea boots, split toe derbies and loafers?

I would say versatility is pretty similar between country grain and hatch grain, and geographically they may be more or less classic. I think both work for each of these styles though I’d personally choose Hatch Grain if I had to choose only one. Mostly because I like it more… but I like both.

How does suede compare across brands (Carmina vs. Crockett vs. Meerin vs. et. al)? I have been looking at the Crockett and Jones Westgate 2 and Westbourne in suede, but others also interest me. I like the wingtip design on this one.

Suede does not equal suede. My Meccariello, Cleverley, Corthay and this pair are the nicest suede I have. The leather on each of them is remarkably different but the result is suede that’s beautiful and holds it’s original shape well over time (with trees of course) and is impervious to the elements (suede isn’t weak, just requires different care). That’s not to say the other suede is poorly made but it’s your standard superbuck options. Check out Stead’s website to learn about different types of suede and you can ask shoemakers what type they’re using. To illustrate I just went to the Carmina custom tool to look at suede options. There are 28 options for suede on the site. They’re mostly color options in waxy suede, repello, vogue (which feels like velvet), calf suede, and suede. The shoemakers like CJ and Carmina and the high end artelliers will treat the suede after buying it from Stead. Some will even give it a patina. But I’m terms of strength, find out what they’re using to start with. Brands like Meermin will usually tell you what they’re using. It will be combined with the rest of the components of the shoes, linings, structure, etc. Hope this helps.

Their RTW is not worth the price IMO. Is there a reason you choose not to state that these are made by Bonafe? It's not really a secret LOL

And the quality is MUCH better than Bonafe.

@@wishoeguy I mean it's been known for years that Bonafe makes for Aubercy, and I would disagree with that statement about the quality. These look to be superb quality shoes like all Bonafe makes whether they are Blake, Goodyear or Hand welted. I would bet Aubercy lasts and designs are most likely exclusive to them and not Bonafe, but I don't believe that has an effect on the quality of finishing. Brioni also used to have a lot of their shoes made by Bonafe.

With four pairs of shoes and a pair of boots, I feel like I’m judging their finishing and material quality fairly. The Aubercy is higher quality. I wonder if the passion for their house brand has waned…. Maybe it’s just me. I’m giving the brand a final try, I hope they deliver.
