Having the clarifier on the mic is a genius idea! Always having to use the clarifier on side band so sitting back and adjusting remotely is a luxury.

Wow, what a find you have there! And I see they were using ol' CW McCall's endorsement of the time for the movie, "Convoy" that was so popular back then :) God, this brings back some seriously great memories. You got one hell of a CB radio there my friend. Midland was one of the great names in CB back then. We had a 23-channel Midland (AM only) for a base station but my brother and I used a couple of Cobra 148GTL's in our cars we bought brand new back then. These are damn great times...

HA HA! That's wild! When I was just starting high school my dad had one almost identical to this mounted in our green1971 Pontiac Bonneville ....used car, but "new to us". Had one of those LONG whip antennas on the back bumper with the giant spring at the base of the antenna. When you pulled into Sonic it would scrape on the overhead canopy....never will forget that sound, lol. I drove that car when I was in high school, and I thought I was the shit! Memories man......thanks for bringing them back! When we took cross-country road trips.....summer vacations.....Texas to California......my old man would talk to everybody under the sun on that CB radio. Would love to have one of those old vintage CBs in my car today......but who the heck would I talk to? Nobody uses them anymore. Heck, do over-the-road cross country truckers even use them any more? I know that back in the late '70s every trucker on the interstate had one of these bad boys in their rig. Do truckers even use these things anymore, asking because I seriously do not know! Anybody? Breaker Breaker one -nine, any smokys out thar?

Howard Ford yes truckers still use cb radios in 2020 they have modify cb radios can go up 200watts built inside the radio now you can talk to them at local trucker gas stations like theflying j and pilot, tta i hear them all the time on ch19 where i lived at up northern part of utah they always on cb at truck gas stations i just talk mining trucker the other day on my cobra139 he telling me his work truck came with cobra ltd29 cb radio inside the semi i guess the trucker companies still use cb radios i'm glad companies keep cb radios in trucks in todays generation they the are people who saved united states during coronvirus for food shortages i'm glad cb radios coming back because coronvirus happen back in march in utah and the united states.

Thank you. Midland seems to have had the rights to use CW McCall's name for a number of years. You see it used on 23 channel radios for a number of years and on their early 40 channel rigs. Midland was like many brand names back in the day. They didn't make radios but contracted with manufacturers. This one was made for them by Cybernet in Japan. There were many different makers of the Midlands through the years. Those Uniden made Cobra 148GTL's are great rigs. Still use one myself. 73's Paul

For people checking out this older post. Many of these 79-892 radios develop a problem in the VCO can. It is potted with epoxy and is very difficult to get in to and repair. Pretty much impossible in fact. The solder connections break inside of them. I bought 2 from Midland years ago but now they are unobtainium. I did put a D-104 mobile microphone on mine. I added a thumb wheel for the clarifier. However it doesn’t track correctly, so I would advise against it.

I adapted an Astatic mobile D-104 to work on mine. I had to cut a hole in the top rear of the mic and epoxied in a P.C. board type of pot, so I could use my finger to adjust the clarifier. Biggest problem with that is it isn’t centered or linear. I believe it needs an audio taper pot. Also, the VCO module goes out in them quite often. It is potted in a can. I used to order them from Midland but they don’t sell them now. You would have to use a solvent and careful drilling and picking to get the potting off and repair it. Possible to do, but hard. Also the channel numbers are on your side of the channel selector and get worn off with use. I replaced mine once. It is a good radio on transmit and receive. Just some strange issues.

Most of these nice, still in the box radios have been sitting in warehouses. I just picked up a Midland "Caravan" 52-300 where the mic has a 12 pin plug. This is because it has up and down channel buttons on the top of the mic. On the side of the mic, there is a volume knob for the speaker volume. Being a sidebander, I'm going to have to find a 79-892 now, thanks alot! :p hehe

But i do have dozens or other 70s cybernet NOS midlands etc that i have been selling as is new in the box or with a full alignment.

Thank you Mark. Honestly if I was smart I would sell it because I can hardly get myself to use new old stock radios. I usually acquire used radios that show some wear or need repair. Don't have that problem with them and I like to use what's in my accumulation/collection.

I have a few Midlands that use the same volume control mic. I changed the chassis mic jacks over to a regular 4 pin jack. I also wire all the jacks on my radios to except the more common 4 pin Cobra configuration. It’s a permanent fix that’s not too difficult, but in my opinion it’s much better than making dongles or using adapters. If you have a variety of mics like most collectors, keeping everything the same makes life easier. Replacing DIN jacks on some radios requires a lot of extra work, but I usually replace those with 4 pin jacks too. I really hate DIN plugs.

nutmegger1957 During the CB craze of the 70s, the FCC gave up on licensing the CB band since no one was bothering to even register, as you've mentioned. This is still true today. You can use AM and both the side bands on CB today without any restrictions. Interesting to say that your original license is a bit of a relic of a bygone era where people actually respected CB and its regulations and got licensed before using it. :)

About 6 months ago I was in a Goodwill thrift store with my wife and saw the same exact radio model that I bought brand new in 1977. It was a Midland CB radio. I paid $249.00 for it then. In the Goodwill store they were trying to sell it for $30.00. It was in really good shape but only had 23 channels and no USB/LSB. About the only thing it was good for was to be a boat anchor.

Yesterday i tried out the panther dx, it should have the same cybernet board like your midland. It sounds very clear on tx and even the rx sound is great (i dont tested the sensitivity yet). I know my one wasnt online, for nearly 30years! It was only used a short time after my friend bought it. It runs very stable, there is no drift or something that happend over the years. Im impressed of this cybernet board.

Hello vintage radio brother. I do love the classic gear. Yes it was quite thrill to open this new old radio. At the same time I sort of hated doing it but I'm not the type of person to leave them in the box and never use or show them. I seldom buy NOS radios because I can't bear to use them much since they're new, or I guess like new after being opened. Well that and they're usually way to expensive for me. This radio is likely a once in a lifetime treat. 73's Paul

@Dubboyy If you do a Google search for SSB mode the first two matches have articles that explain it much better than I can. For a quicky answer the side bands are suppressed carrier modes that are mirror images of AM but with no carrier. Each SSB mode, lower side band and upper side band, are on their respective sides of the carrier wave of the AM signal.

DO not lose the mic the clarifier is on the mic! If you come across one with out the mic just pass on them. You see them all the time with out the mic. I do not know how hard it is to build the clarifier circuit that is in the mic. Some Motorola's had that too and with out the mic they are boat anchors!

@SouthCarolina116 Thank you for sharing the about these radios. That vendor had quite a few of these didn't he. It looks like he might have sold them all now. No more listings. I had a feeling they might sound okay on SSB. Glad to know they sound great in that mode. Since it's a new radio I will seldom ever use it. That's the main reason I don't like to buy new vintage radios. Can't get myself to use them. LOL I'd like to find a used one like you did to actually use. 73's Paul

@SWIZZRADIOS Thank you Stefan. Those 79-891's don't come up for sale often here in the States. I can only 100% remember one on the U.S. eBay this year and possibly a second one earlier in the year. I've got a rough 79-893 (Uniden 858) that works for the most part after a lot of work. Still need to align it and figure out the odd noise on AM TX. It was butchered badly by Bubba before I got it.

Thank you. Congrats on the Pace 8093. Yes eBay can be good for finding classic radios. I like the old mechanical dial readout 40 channel radios like this one as well. LED readouts are nice but the old transparent dial knobs with a beck light are practically bullet proof. Just have to replace the bulb once in a while. That is easier than changing a bad LED display. 73's Paul

Hello Dave. Thanks. I agree stock they do lack audio. If I had one of these I wanted to use regularly I would do something similar to what you did for the clarifier issue. Although I think I'll make a mic cheater for these & have a potentiometer mounted in a little hobby box coming off the cheater for the claririfer. That way can choose any four pin Cobra/Galaxy mic to use with the radio. That's my plan if I ever run across one of these radios used. This new radio I don't use. 73's Paul

I own one of these from when it was new back in the day. I still own it although it needs work. The audio chip has died. I have a cache of them, just need to replace it. Over the years I've dealt with the clairifier a few different ways. When using as a base, I modded a TUG-8 stand and added a 250K ohm pot to the base. The latest for mobile use was a daughter box that mounts off the side of the mounting bracket. This allowed me to use a std power mic.

Years ago, here in the USA, it USED to be true that you had to send in a License request, to operate an AM CB Radio. I sent mine in, and got my License by mail with the Call Sign included. Can I use Upper and Lower Sidebands for communication with just the License I received for AM CB Radio, or must I have an additional or different License?

Thank you. I don't remember the exact price but I believe it was a little below $80. The eBay seller I purchased it from must have had more than two cases of them because they listed them off and on many different times until all were sold. Some sold for well over $100 and others below $100. Luck of the draw as far as bidding competition. IIRC one or two might have sold for over $200. Not sure about that but in the back of my mind I thought at least one sold that high. 73's Paul

Indeed. I just wish I still had my old Cobra 148GTL's from back then but like everything else from that time period it got sold off when our interest began to fade in CB stuff. Funny thing is I got back into it around 1990. By then the Uniden (President) HR2510 was one of the big honcho radio's around the country - well, that and the RCI-2900 and then the 2950. Still have the HR2510 :)

Thanks for the suggestion but did you ever think that maybe I did the video this way on purpose? Most videos I know the item quite well before shooting any video but at times, like in this video, I do the angle where the viewer discovers things as I do. Besides if you had watched more of the video you would have seen I figured it out. Now I have a suggestion for you, In the future think about how something reads that you write because your message comes off very disrespectful. 73's Paul

These radios were good sounding radios but a bit weak on transmit audio with the factory limiter in place. Once defeated, it sounded very strong, especially with a power mic at reasonable gain levels (100%) Again, the audio chip is weak; being very susceptible to voltage variations. I've bought a few others over the years but would have loved to have found a NOS one. Great find!

Back in the early 90's when I was a teenager is when I got started in radio. Still use the HR2510/President Lincoln radios to this day. One of my all around favorite rigs. You can find the Uniden made Cobra 148GTL's fairly easily. They were made in huge numbers. Later model President Grant, the Uniden Grant, Grant XL.... same basic chassis. If made in Taiwan or Philippines they're Uniden. I avoid the 148's made in Malaysia. They were made by RCI, not the same quality. China rigs I avoid as well
