Before the show she told Jonell Monae she was really nervous about the performance. Janelle told her to pretend she's only singing to her. When the performance started, Janelle stood up and stayed up. That's the reason Brandi keeps looking to her left.

Thanks for your real, emotional reaction to her and this song. Last summer, Brandi and the Twins were traveling around doing the Beyond These Silent Days album tour concerts and occasionally "opening" for Pink in her huge stadium shows. Two of Brandi's die hard fans were wearing Brandi shirts at one of those concerts and after Brandi performed a couple of songs, some fellow audience members nearby, wearing their Pink merch, looked at this couple's shirts and said "You knew who the real headliner of this show is, didn't you? Wow!" Brandi just picked up a couple more Grammys the other day. Watch the Highwomen's song Highwomen where they rewrote the lyrics of the Highwaymen's song to reflect the history of female heroes through the years. It'll make you cry, too.

Thanks for this. So refreshing that you watched the whole performance without pausing to comment mid-song. It made such a difference. Brandi is the best live act there is out there. About 20 years ago, I went to a nearby theater to see Vienna Teng. Brandi Carlile was the opener. I had never heard of her nor any of her music. She and the twins came out and did most of her/their first album and several songs that turned up on the second, The Story. My jaw dropped because she and the twins were so amazing. That first remains my favorite of her albums. When my mother died a couple of years later, I had to do a lot of driving. That album was my companion and comfort during those travels. I got to meet Brandi soon after when she opened for Shawn Colvin. I told her how much her music means to me. She was gracious and kind. A true artist.
