Brandi Marie Carlile penned “The Joke” (2017) as a comment on the sociopolitical climate following the 2016 US presidential election. “Let ‘em laugh while they can Let ‘em spin, let ‘em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I’ve seen how it ends And the joke’s on them” Carlisle explained that “there are so many people feeling misrepresented. So many people feeling unloved. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal.” This won the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song at the 2019 ceremony, where Carlile also performed the piece. “By The Way, I Forgive You” (2017) also earned her the Award for Best Americana Album‼️ HATS 🎩 OFF TO YOU, BRANDI❕ ❤️🇺🇸💙

There's that little cry in her voice that makes this song sound so haunting. I love it so much. She is a genre all by herself. So much soul in her voice, similar to folk songs from the 60's and early 70's.

@@rickfrenzy9556 Neil Diamond has it happen occasionally, but it's by accident rather than design and it melts my heart. In Lee Greenwood's original version of "God bless the U.S.A." (the video starts with him on a tractor) the first time he sings the line "Cause the flag still stands for freedom And they can't take that away" when he gets to "Awaaaa haaaaay", it's the ONLY time he has ever done it that first time. I don't think he ever does it quite the same whenever he sings it, but I was hearing it all day long on the radio when that song came out in 1984. It got played on pop, country, and who knows what other genre, but it was getting played all day and that stuck with me.

I’m kind of stunned by the visceral reaction I’m having listening to this, on repeat.....Can’t help but think about all the young kids who have taken their lives after being so cruelly tormented, teased and bullied. No more, please, it has to stop....”don’t ever let them steal your joy....”
@rogerw21017 жыл бұрын
Jonathanfall1 I agree 100% . but bulling will never stop. I went through so many years of it . All I wanted to do was die. I hated life from the age of 10 to about 20 when I started fighting back and kicking ass on the ones who were doing it to me then it stopped . Now I fight for those who it happens too.
@moodylicious7 жыл бұрын
cheers to roger and jonathan. You exemplify what our boys and men need to aspire. Bullies seriously impacted my son, just for being a transfer to a new school. Those cruel, unrelenting bullies planted scars on a young soul for life. Other things compounding and one day it was too much and he was done. (((1985-2016 RIP my precious one)))
@rogerw21017 жыл бұрын
moodylicious I'm sorry for your lose . Being bullied never goes away. I'm 56 years old and was bullied from the time I was 7 years old till I was about 18 it was hell and I almost didn't make it . At 56 I can still remember everything about it. And most of the kids that bullied me are all dead a few from car crashes but most of them just dropped dead . I grew up in a small country town in Wisconsin on a small dairy farm and got teased cause I smelled like cow crap and that I was a big fat kid . That never went away . The bullies now just have more ways to do it. I knew when I left school for the day it was over. Not now its with the kids 24-7 with all the media there is. When I see a kid getting picked on I say something about it ! I don't care who's kid it is if there a bully ! I give them Hell ! Thanks Roger.
@moodylicious7 жыл бұрын
oh Roger, I wish I could erase that pain from your soul, darlin'. Bullying leaves deep scars. It is NOT harmless, typical school-kid behaviors.I am glad you hung in there, as you are now able to make a difference. You are here to call them out on it when you see it. I help people in ways I can from what I have experienced. We are all walking wounded, I say and we must try to be kind, for we know not what our brothers and sisters have endured in this walk through Life. My son was a gentle soul with a loving heart. I never even knew he was relentlessly picked on by kids until almost 17 years later; all because he was not a jock, didn't conform to their way of dress. He shined but people don't like individuals. They need sameness, bullies need each other for courage, it gives them more power to inflict triple pain on their victims.Many are cowards when alone. I don't know if Brandi is speaking to gay kids. Mine was not gay. He was his own quirky self and took a lot of flack because of his "impeccable style". I took him out of an abusive home at a young age but still witnessed his father intimidate , beat and bully his mom (me) for a few years of his young life. I did the best I could raising him and he was a brilliant beautiful but damaged, depressed soul, from not only the bullying but from suffering every loss one could in a short period of time along with a bad heart. I was not as sensitive to the fragility of his tired, embattled heart at his lowest hour. I blame myself for his demise. Kids who are bullied severely grow up bearing the baggage of Post Traumatic Stress. It breeds anxiety, depression, fear and makes one question oneself. I thank you for writing. Let the Light shine on you roger, and you Jonathan. My child has left this physical world. My heart is shattered, My only comfort is he is no longer a tormented human being. He is spirit now and I will reunite with him one day. Didn't mean to write a downer post. I'm sorry. But I had to write to you thank you and acknowledge your pain, as well as your compassion. pam
@rogerw21017 жыл бұрын
moodylicphaiThank you very much for posting back to me . I feel bad for you for the lose . I don't know the pain from loosing a child ! But I know the pain from never having one , I was the only boy in our family I had 2 older sisters that had kids , my ex wife had 2 girls when we got married and couldnt have anymore , Which I know but a wall between me and my family . They never said it but I over heard what was said and how they felt . I raised them as mine from the time they were 4 and 5 years old . After the marriage ended they haven't talked to since . The oldest had a boy and girl . The boy she sent to Texas to be with his dad and her girl I have talked to like 5 times , The second daughter has 4 kids and I have talked to her oldest 3 times she's 15 now the others I don't know and never will . So I know lose I guess after looking at it. I've been with my girlfriend for 12 years and her oldest son died at 20 from drinking and depression . He was bullied as a kid. But I never knew him . well enough I guess . I guess life would be easier if we had a map how to get through it . But most of us just do it with are eyes closed . I know that my dad didn't think much of me and not having any boys he thought less of me. But there isn't much I can do now cause I'm to old . I just found out a couple of days ago that my ex wife has onset Dementia not sure if that is how its spelled . but at 54 she don't hardly remember any thing and in 2 years it will all be gone . So I guess life isn't fair at all. I have to go now . Bless you. !!

What a great App. I am now obsessed with this powerful, emotional, brilliant, beautiful song. You're feeling nervous, aren't you, boy? With your quiet voice and impeccable style Don't ever let them steal your joy And your gentle ways To keep 'em from running wild They can kick dirt in your face Dress you down, and tell you that your place Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine I see you tugging on your shirt Trying to hide inside of it And hide how much it hurts Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them You get discouraged, don't you, girl? It's your brother's world for a while longer We gotta dance with the devil on a river To beat the stream Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder They come to kick dirt in your face To call you weak and then displace you After carrying your baby on your back across the desert I saw your eyes behind your hair And you're looking tired, but you don't look scared Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them Let 'em laugh while they can Let 'em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke's on them Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

man, this is so gorgeous. utterly mesmerizing. something about every one of brandi's songs has me enthralled on every verse, and moved by every chorus, and the ending always blows me away. can't wait for the new album. based on this, it's got to be incredible.

She never disappoints. Ultimate, #1 favorite from the first time I ever heard her. Can't wait to see her again next year. It will be my 9th time and I can't even express how much each show gets better and better and better. She's simply THE BEST!

Absolutely BRILLIANT. I wish I could send this straight into the heart of Emma Gonzalez right now, and ALL of those incredible young men and women saying #neveragain and taking so much crap from idiots...

Just heard this song for the first time in my car today and damn went the tears. Among other lyrics on "The Joke" this devastates: "They come to kick dirt in your face. To call you weak and then displace you after carrying your baby on your back across the desert." I think of all the people who sacrifice to give their children a better world but keep getting squashed.
