How the Alessi Bird Kettle was designed and made.
The famous 'Bird' kettle was designed by the famous American artist and architect Michael Graves for Alessi, a world leader in premium kitchen and home products. Since its introduction in 1985 the 'Bird' kettle has become, by far, Alessi's number one selling product, and has led to numerous prestigious design awards. The kettle is made in Crusinallo, Italy, about a 90-minute drive from Milan.
Alberto Alessi heads the world famous Italian design factory that bears his name. Founded in 1921, the Alessi brand has become synonymous with hip, elegant kitchenware. Generally crafted in colourful plastic and stainless steel, and using the skills of well-known designers, many items became 'must-haves' for design-conscious householders.
The Alessi Company is a family affair, managed today by Alberto Alessi, the grandson of the company founder. When Alberto assumed control of the company in the 1980's he revitalized the brand and ensured its future, through collaborations with some of the biggest names in design, including Norman Foster, Frank Gehry and Jasper Morrison. It was Alberto's decision to move beyond metalwork to produce designs in ceramics and wood. Among the most famous items produced during this period are Philippe Starck's citrus juicer and Michael Graves's kettle with the bird-shaped whistle.

My Mom bought one when they first came out in 1985, thought they were so beautiful and shiny. She passed it on to me in the mid 90's and I am still using it daily. The kettle itself is superb! Beautiful design and the shiny stainless steel is something to behold. I have had a couple of problems over the years. It was left on the electric burner one day, boiled all the water out and the knob for the top cover melted loose from the heat. I was able to repair it although replacement lids are available. Amazingly, after sitting on the burner which was on high with no water in it for over 15 mins., the kettle was fine, bottom was a bit discolored but that was all. The bird whistle finally broke off a piece where it goes into the kettle which is why I am here as I am looking for a replacement. The kettle is generally not left on the stove unless being used. If left on the stove cooking things near it will eventually leave a film buildup from oils, splatters, etc. on the stainless steel causing it to lose shine. I have cleaned mine on occasion with "Simichrome" metal polish to get that wonderful SS shine back. What more can I say, it is 39 yrs.old and still a beautiful work of art to behold!

I bought mine on eBay. Used. I love how it has a little patina to it, but it still looks good. Also, mine is the earlier version, without the plastic shield on the lid. This shield is a design compromise. It detracts from the simplicity and clean lines. It collects dirt, and gets cracked. I’m guessing it was put there to prevent idiots, and litigious Americans from burning themselves on the hot lid. I love the way my kettle looks good, gives me a smile, and just gets on with its job. I’m in my fifties, and I expect my kettle will outlive me. And as a design, it’s timeless.

I love my birdie kettle to look at less to use. The birdie doesn’t whistle very well and I seem to be losing steam fro m other areas. The lid? Which means that I need to have the extractor fan running over the job when I boils the kettle and then I need to wipe down the induction hob after as it is very wet from the condensation

I bought it from the Finnish Design Shop - they are great but the kettle is very poor...steam coming out from the lid so the whistle is not whistling. The bird is so hot you need a towel to pour the water, the handle becomes very hot - ???? The store send me two kettles - the same. Beautiful but very disappointing....

It’s sounds like any ordinary kettle. Mine whistles a chord in a low tone.

I see its ingenuity but the shape would be annoying no? The spout is before the border of the kettle itself so that last bit of water would be difficult to pull off. While the cone like shape would supposedly give more stability while carrying it around, it wouldn't be as seemless to pour. I'm not very familiar with this kettle why and when did it become popular? Someone help haha.

Yup. And, it doesn't whistle like it does in this video. And it takes a real long time to heat up. Basically enjoyed the look for a few weeks, received a replacement bird whistle, got tired of plastic shavings in the water (from shoving the bird into the spout), returned for full refund. Looks nice on a shelf, but not even close to practical.

mine the same, needs alot of power to whistle. And also bird expanded a bit after one day using and hardly fits the hole.

These people talk great, have a nice conversation, shoot videos, and.... disable comments!!! because they are afraid that they will write about problems with Alessi's products, since they produce products that do not meet good quality. Namely, my product from Alessi is rusty!!! another melted, and another kettle had a broken whistle opening mechanism and a rusty whistle. but the worst thing is that THE KETTLE IS RUSTY INSIDE!!! and when I contacted the support service, they pretended that nothing had happened and offered me to buy new products with a 50% discount.. that's how this company works!!!
