I think the ideal is finding a hybrid. An indie that can partner with a major. These situations are rare when it can make sense financially for the indie (they don't do a lot of 50/50 joint ventures anymore) but I'd say Russ and Lecrae are the examples in their situations with Columbia. Personally I've done business with a major but you're totally spot on about priority and resources. Working with another hybrid and trying to figure out how to make it make sense. Thanks for these videos Sean.

I thought after uploading my music to Soundcloud and paying them monthly for "pro account" would bring at least some minimal promotion for my music. But I was wrong. The problem of an independent artist is a lack of money for promotion. How would people hear your music if there;'s no promotion. That's why artists want to get signed because the music label is providing the promotion for the artist.
@alien-hs1zn4 жыл бұрын
You should follow the Russ strategy when your a nobody and have no connection you should post a song once a week and be making content to and as time goes people are going to be like who’s this person I keep seeing them they get curious and click on your cloud and realize damn you have a catalog of music good music quality and they become a fan and then the rest is history then you have the word of mouth your going to be ok his plan is genius especially if you don’t have connections the reason 1 week strategy works is because 1 week on the internet it like 1 month were so bombarded with so much information nowadays we forget so much stuff music included sometimes if your posting a song 1 month and your not growing that can be the reason why our attention span has shortened as time goes by
In my opinion signing a record deal without building your own HEAVY buzz/leverage isn’t smart at all. Independent’s biggest struggle is undoubtedly funding, other then that it’s definitely the way to go until you’re so big that you can merge and do a partnership deal where you retain control. Just my 2 cents. Another killer vid my man 🤘🏽

Bro, oh my god you just essentially told the story of what the label I signed too did to me and am still continuing to struggle with, although I am one of two artists this label has signed, they proved to not only show me that they were already looking for "better" talent which essentially just meant an artist with a larger social media following, disenfranchised a huge part of my name/brand by essentially trying to recreate me into something I just wasn't, when I wouldn't agree with on going situations and wanted to steer the direction of where my art was going I was threatened, talked down too as if I merely just a child, ghosted for nearly over a month alongside halting the release of the current song I had wanted to drop until I basically fully gave my manager the creative control of what I'm doing over to him which he then continued to shit on the years of work I have put in to create a genuine vibe for people. Like you said, from them it was all love at the beginning, but as soon as I had something to say, there wasn't too much negotiating allowed. Let alone, this is a bullshit dumb tech label that claims to be something there completely not as far as what I'm concerned. They took my personal marketing advice as bullshit when I had seen genuine success with it, I had a decent reach within my socials at the time and I could feel the energy I created was being loved from more than just a local scale as an independent artist, I had personally started to network with what I felt was a niche scene with a cult like following and was really just on the brink of doing something great from my perspective on my own, at the time of originally signing, I had 7,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify with only about 6 songs available with more of my discography being on SoundCloud, originally before I had signed and what I always wanted to do through my partnership with the label was to release my most popular songs out of the 90 tracks I have on SoundCloud, of course work on new singles, make investments towards music videos, graphic designers that I would help find and hire to create an aesthetic that fits my brand, and basically as soon as I signed and was flown out, I was told that isn't going to be happening, I'm going to do what I'm told and be thankful that I have the opportunity to work with them, I could go on about this but I would just like to mainly note that as far as marketing went, they'd spam message my closest friends/artists who actively support me about my new music releasing, essentially slandering any artists work who I associated with wasn't signed like they were some hot shots compared to people with good work whether it be KZbin skits, music, cover art ext. They did what they could to basically budget any artwork they could working with animators who couldn't understand where I wanted the artistic direction to go, weren't going to purchase the rights of beats made by certain producers, wouldn't allow me to personally be in control of the distribution of my work when that originally was the plan, and last but not least, after not spending money on the quality of my work, they would throw thousands of dollars into Google Ads after I specifically said that wasn't the direction I think we should go with music non the less anything associated with me, since firing my manager but still being clung to a publishing contract that they hold over me with a lot of hostility, I'm currently at 41 Spotify Followers right now and was barley over that when working with them. Some die hard fans that I am extremely thankful to have continue to support me, but I just feel like the main reason I lost alot of reach is due to their marketing fucking up my natural growing algorithm alongside some people loosing interest over the fact that I was rebranding in a way I never wanted too in the beginning. As an artist to another that is considering signing, DON'T. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND LEARN HOW TO BE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST. FUCK THE IDEA OF HAVING SOMEBODY TAKE CONTROL OF YOU, YOUR WORK, THE INTEGRITY OF YOUR CAREER, AND WAAAAYYY MORE. THE FUCKERY NEVER ENDS WITH RECORD LABELS IN GENERAL.
@arongubbe2 жыл бұрын
