Super obscure fact: in the 1930's there was this guy named Wilhelm Reich and he was a mystic (or something like that). He said there was something called "orgone energy" and it was a magical spiritual energy that people could channel and use like The Force from Star Wars. He believed orgone could even be saved in a container and used later, like an electric battery. Continuing along that same path of idea, Reich believed he would one day figure out how to use orgone to power machines, just like a new source of fuel. He claimed he was able to do stuff with orgone, but that oil barons sent henchmen to destroy his laboratory and discredit him - yadda, yadda... Anyway, I'm thinking that's where they got the idea of "Argo-" man. Argo / Orgone. Get it? Just a thought.

ahh, W.R.: mysteries of the organism. only in the 1970s could you mix together a documentary on a slightly quack-ish psychologist, a fictional group of followers of his free-love teachings in Communist Yugoslavia, and random cuts to a rock band or drag queens.
@morphman866 жыл бұрын
Sorta makes sense, except orgone works the opposite way. Orgone is the energy released from a female orgasm (not even kidding with that one), but Argoman loses his power when he has sex with a woman, so... Reich created "orgone accumulators" that he brought around the world to "collect scientific data", which could only be done by placing women inside the "accumulator" and watch them masturbate until they reached orgasm, thus "releasing the orgones". I think most people reading this understands why the ethics committee shut him down rather quickly after they found that one out. Nobody destroyed his lab, they just refused to give him funding for his project, where he literally wanted masturbating women to replace every power source on the planet.
@drewgehringer78136 жыл бұрын
the FBI fucked with his lab a bit because he was also kind of a communist and wrote books about the mass psychology of fascism. Some of his less crank work, tbh.

I first saw this movie very early, so I'm very sentimental about it. It's also about my first experience with an "anti-hero" character. And no matter how much of one he is, that ending definitely surprises you - usually a movie doesn't even let an anti-hero kill the FEMALE villain. So that's a little brave of it.

2:33 And that was their best take. I love me some Superargo (not to be confused with Argoman) from "Superargo vs Diabolikus" and "Superargo and the Faceless Giants" (confusingly alt-titled "Superargo"). While he wasn't totally averse to violence, Superargo was a sort of guilt-tormented reverse-Batman who devoted himself to the superhero shtick to atone for accidentally killing his friend in the wrestling ring. In "Diabolikus," he's basically James Bond with human-perfection muscles and no taste in clothes, while in "Faceless" he hooks up with a guru who teaches him to levitate and perform other astounding metahuman tricks. (He also slays a bunch of zombies with a tricked-out murdermobile, but that's still less perverse than mentally commanding enemies to "kill each other, kill each other.")

Its a good concept, but it definitely would be giving the writers too much credit if we were to say they thought about it. It mainly just seem like a overly long pilot episode for an european, super powered (and extremely amoral) 60s Batman.

To be fair, Argoman seems what a superhuman of his level would probably decide to be: A rich bastard who only helps people for a chance to use his powers, and whatever else might be in it for him. A pretty realistic anti-hero, one step away from being a villain himself, and many steps ahead of the typical idealistic fantasies of his genre at the time. 15:05 Oh, by the way: A "magnetic gun" is theoretically pretty dangerous. It basically uses an electromagnetic pulse instead of a gunpowder charge to fire a bullet, although without the additional acceleration along that barrel that a rail or gauss gun offers. Guns like that were never build irl because they would require a large battery in addition to a magazine.
@KaijuCommander9 жыл бұрын
Fun review Brandon, well done. I really wonder what the writers were thinking when they created so many plot holes in this story, i.e. all those instances where Argoman could have used his powers but didn't. They probably should have toned down his super powers a tad so he could be more believably threatened by the non-super powered villains...Granted, as you explained he's really just as bad as the bad guys of the film, or rather more so XD. Maybe supervillain protagonists or "anti-heroes" were just really popular at the time?

Anyone else thinking they should bring-back the trend of superhero movies having cool swingin' themes? Imagine Endgame with Motown backup singers and syncopated bongos. 1:40 Argoman, having not thought this through and hence not been sufficiently specific, is hit by several stray bullets and bleeds-out. Roll credits. It's an... interesting choice to show him casually breaking his handcuffs, too. Implies he really could have escaped at any moment, and without bloodshed; just tell the dudes to freeze, and go home. But Argoman hungered for slaughter. 4:48 Ironically, the Mona Lisa is only as famous as it is because it was stolen. There's a great Drunk History segment on it. Basically, some numb-nut Italian nationalist got it into his head that ML, being painted by an "Italian" (da Vinci), belonged to Italy. As such, he went to France and stole it (it wasn't hard, as it was just one of many da Vincis, and not considered especially important at the time). Newspapers of the day, being big into "yellow journalism", went absolutely nuts at the sexy art-heist scandal, and implored their readers to be on the look-out, printing many pictures of ML and making the painting a "household name", so to speak. Meanwhile, our Italian Fascist friend had the thing propped-up on his breakfast table. Eventually, the Italian gov made an appeal pointing-out that, while da Vinci was "Italian", the ML had been painted in France and given by Leo to the French gov. Whoops. The painting was sheepishly returned, but the fame stuck. 6:00 Argoman had a real interesting day when Viagra hit the market. 8:14 You could argue that it's Jennabelle's plan, but the plan relying on Argoman choosing to be rapey doesn't change the fact that he's still... choosing to be rapey. Hell, it probably makes it worse, as Jennabelle planning on it implies that Argoman is known for choosing rape whenever possible. 9:53 ""Remember to drink your Ovaltine"?! Fuck off, ring."
