So, the one "fancy" effect they had was moving nostrils. On a bird. Where the nostrols are just holes in the super non-flexing beak.

Good to know someone else noticed that. Also, I'm not sure which of these is the most sad part of all this: that, the fact that they passed on Harryhausen, or the fact that Rankin/Bass made a scarier giant bird monster for fucking Rudolph's Shiny New Year.

The eyes move at least. But yes, flaring nostrils on a beak are pretty silly.

"Hold your fire! We'll try and scare him away...by firing at him!" That is legitimately one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. And I'm 90% sure that wasn't what that line was suppose to do.

3:20 Fun fact: until 1968, there were no such thing as rating systems (hence no such thing as "50's X-rated movie" either). It means during the 50s, as long as you pay the ticket, you don't have any problem to see a movie no matter how young you are. That's also the main reason the movies during that decade were not permitted to be graphically explicit, because the movie was technically open to every age group.
@bostonrailfan2427
@bostonrailfan2427 18 күн бұрын
…that’s not really why, there was a very strict code in Hollywood that wasn’t relaxed until the 60s so explicit things weren’t allowed let alone shown in theaters

Fun Fact: The reason the acting is pretty decent was because the actors were trying. They thought it was a more serious movie and didn't know what the monster looked like until they saw the first screening of the movie.

I mean... ignoring the fact that creature made of antimatter would explode the second it came into contact with the matter of Earth's atmosphere, the solution in this is actually kind of clever if you boil it down to a premise-solution level. The bird has a force field that nullifies all normal projectiles on a sub-atomic level--so they solve it by making a weapon out of subatomic matter denser than a normal atom. The force field can't pull this dense projectile apart, so it gets through the forcefield.

Honestly, I think this movie could lend itself to a decent remake. Seriously, with enough passion and clever writing behind it (As well as a MUCH needed update of the monster bird's design), a remake of this movie could make for a legitimately suspenseful and thrilling sci-fi movie, as well as a loving tribute to 1950's monster movies. :)

at 10:44. The Cocoa Puffs bird screwing a Deadite? It looks more like if Dooby Buzzard flew into a nuclear reactor because his momma a told hiiim to get somethin' for dinneeer. At 12:00 Actually from what I heard, the director knew that the puppet was stupid and made it so the actors never actually saw the puppet during the films production. The actors actually had to imagine what the bird looked like in order to act scared. And when Jeff Morrow, the actor playing Mitch, saw the finished film in his home town cinema, the audience laughed uproariously when the bird was first seen, so Mitch actually snuck out of the theater in embarrassment. Also, You didn't talk about the scene where we find out why it came to Earth in the first place. It did it's spiral pattern because it was getting materials for a nest and it laid an egg. The scene showed Sally (The female lead) shooting the egg, and it had Pierre get eaten.

Brandon, it's time for the trifecta. You got Playboy Playmate Mara Corday in "The Giant Claw" and "Tarantula." Now, you need to get her in "Black Scorpion," from the producers of the science fiction classic "Them." It's another interesting production with recognizable actors (Richard Denning from "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," and Carlos Rivas from "The King and I"). That said, it has got what has to be one of the wildest final battles in movie history. Oh and it has the Mexican Kenny.

2:38 *DISCLAIMER:* the preceeding joke was meant for satirical purposes. In actual fact, there are several studies which show that women are more than capable of doing math. I mean, I can't really think of any right now, but I'm sure they exist. Tell ya what. If anyone knows of any studies showing that women are capable of math, feel free to post them in the comments. (actually don't, this is still a joke and you'd be foolish to play into it.)

Except for the incredibly bad bird design and the weird theory about an antimatter shield on a bird, the movie moves fast and is easy to follow. The issue mentioned about the strange music in the apartment of the engineer is actually a table radio playing in the background that cuts in later with an announcement of martial law, actually shown in the movie.

This is hilarious; thank you! I remember The Giant Claw from way back when we had a 9-minute version on 8mm film (yeah, I'm old). Even with the grainy quality of the film and being little kids, we could easily see the wires attached to the critter's eyes. And you gotta love the narrator: "Terrah. Terrah and nightmayah harrah." You did a great job skewering this "classic".

At 5:00, the USAF starts to regret choosing an electrical engineer over a highly-experienced pilot for the job of Test Pilot. But luckily, his specialty is experimental particle physics. And he makes apparati that can fit on a cargo plane and produces pounds of mesons from the energy of 12v batteries. Or something.

One of my "guilty pleasure" films--particularly due to the excellent cast of fifties' SF/horror film regulars like Jeff Morrow, the HOT Mara Corday, Morris Ankrum, Robert Shayne, Clark Howat, Morgan Jones, and even stuffy Edgar Barrier. It's a lot of fun, in my opinion, and I'll watch it from time to time as the mood strikes me.

I think the reason the movie is considered so notorious is BECAUSE of the monster design -- and the horrible dialogue that refers to the beast as being as large as a battleship -- over and over and over again. It's like there were virtually NO other words to use in the script! Great review, as always. Thanks for posting!
