So, the one "fancy" effect they had was moving nostrils. On a bird. Where the nostrols are just holes in the super non-flexing beak.
@metanightmare44546 жыл бұрын
Good to know someone else noticed that. Also, I'm not sure which of these is the most sad part of all this: that, the fact that they passed on Harryhausen, or the fact that Rankin/Bass made a scarier giant bird monster for fucking Rudolph's Shiny New Year.

3:20 Fun fact: until 1968, there were no such thing as rating systems (hence no such thing as "50's X-rated movie" either). It means during the 50s, as long as you pay the ticket, you don't have any problem to see a movie no matter how young you are. That's also the main reason the movies during that decade were not permitted to be graphically explicit, because the movie was technically open to every age group.
@bostonrailfan242718 күн бұрын
…that’s not really why, there was a very strict code in Hollywood that wasn’t relaxed until the 60s so explicit things weren’t allowed let alone shown in theaters

I mean... ignoring the fact that creature made of antimatter would explode the second it came into contact with the matter of Earth's atmosphere, the solution in this is actually kind of clever if you boil it down to a premise-solution level. The bird has a force field that nullifies all normal projectiles on a sub-atomic level--so they solve it by making a weapon out of subatomic matter denser than a normal atom. The force field can't pull this dense projectile apart, so it gets through the forcefield.

at 10:44. The Cocoa Puffs bird screwing a Deadite? It looks more like if Dooby Buzzard flew into a nuclear reactor because his momma a told hiiim to get somethin' for dinneeer. At 12:00 Actually from what I heard, the director knew that the puppet was stupid and made it so the actors never actually saw the puppet during the films production. The actors actually had to imagine what the bird looked like in order to act scared. And when Jeff Morrow, the actor playing Mitch, saw the finished film in his home town cinema, the audience laughed uproariously when the bird was first seen, so Mitch actually snuck out of the theater in embarrassment. Also, You didn't talk about the scene where we find out why it came to Earth in the first place. It did it's spiral pattern because it was getting materials for a nest and it laid an egg. The scene showed Sally (The female lead) shooting the egg, and it had Pierre get eaten.

That said, it has got what has to be one of the wildest final battles in movie history. Oh and it has the Mexican Kenny.

At 5:00, the USAF starts to regret choosing an electrical engineer over a highly-experienced pilot for the job of Test Pilot. But luckily, his specialty is experimental particle physics. And he makes apparati that can fit on a cargo plane and produces pounds of mesons from the energy of 12v batteries. Or something.

That was literally what my thought was when I first saw the scene where Mara raised her elegantly-gloved hand to her horrified mouth "No - this can't be real... they decided to go with *that* thing?" She 'acted' it perfectly - or *did* she?

The actor who played Mitch saw what they used for the bird, stormed out of the theater angry and embarrassed. They never saw it in the movie. It was kept from them for "better acting " more like so they wouldn't walk off the set.

And we knew that because right at the start of the picture, there's a barbed-wire-topped fence with a sign saying: U.S. AIR FORCE INTERCEPTOR COMMAND EXPERIMENTAL STATION No. 6 WINTHROP MANITOBA CANADA Really, you'd think the local folks wouldn't need a sign to tell them which friggin' PROVINCE and COUNTRY they're in!

One of my "guilty pleasure" films--particularly due to the excellent cast of fifties' SF/horror film regulars like Jeff Morrow, the HOT Mara Corday, Morris Ankrum, Robert Shayne, Clark Howat, Morgan Jones, and even stuffy Edgar Barrier. It's a lot of fun, in my opinion, and I'll watch it from time to time as the mood strikes me.

HEY, THE GIANT BIRD IS A BATTLE SHIP
@earlallison9 жыл бұрын
I think the reason the movie is considered so notorious is BECAUSE of the monster design -- and the horrible dialogue that refers to the beast as being as large as a battleship -- over and over and over again. It's like there were virtually NO other words to use in the script! Great review, as always. Thanks for posting!
