One of the many things I love about this film is how it gives the minor characters brief hints of individuality, like the coroner with sandwiches, the switchboard operator constantly on the line with her mother, the woman whose daughter wants the freedom to grow up, the Mexican kid with his coloured pens, the archivist with his Proposition to expand the site.... I also love how the film's protagonists actually make sensible decisions: they close the beaches, patrol the area, set up a plan to monitor the canal system. When things go wrong, it's not because these people are idiots, but because they don't know obscure details of the local landscape.

the so-called "Salton Sea" is an intermittent lake that comes and goes depending how much it is raining in California this particular century. Last time it was filled up was due to overflow from irrigation: really, not a particularly likely locale for ancient water monsters. Yeah, this has always been one of my favorite movie monsters of all time. Just check out the shape of the head when he rears up during the scene by the boat. I don't know if it would be "animatronic" as we know the term today; it was purely mechanical, probably operated by puppeteers with cables. For something similar, check out the lake dragon in the '60s sword n' sandal flicks "Medusa against the Son of Hercules", or the sea monster in "Hercules and the Princess of Troy"; both done by Carlo Rambaldi, who worked on 1976 "King Kong" and its sequel, "Alien", "E.T.", "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind", "Dune", "Conan the Destroyer" and Stephen King's "Cat's Eye" and "Silver Bullet" among others.

You joke about and scoff at the idea of people finding slugs or snails scary, but I actually suffer from molluskophobia, which is a fear of slugs and snails. I will legitimately run away screaming if I see one. However, the creature in this movie doesn't really provoke that reaction from me. I think it's because it doesn't look enough like a real snail, it doesn't have the right texture, it's not gooey enough, and it doesn't really move like one, either.

This movie does not get the airing that other 50's monster films do. I never saw it till the late 2000's when a Video store that I use to shop at went out of business . I found this film in the one dollar bin. It turned out to be the best film that I purchases and I have enjoyed it a number of time. It should be better known.

16:19 The 1950's answer to the gunfire scene from Predator! ..only, they actually DID kill the monster. This one's a kickass creature feature from late nite TNT time, or whatever channel 56 was when I was a kid. The big 'ol snails were pretty cool and the rest of movie gradually picked up eventually. A bit light on the monster, but definitely classic 50's sci-fi~ I woulda taken a minced ham sammich though, just not on rye, bleck.

"A Pal for Gary" was the last episode he was in. All subsequent appearances were one if his stuntsnails. Gary was furious about what the writers had done about his relationship with Spongebob. He told the writer, and I quote, "Meow meow meow meow meeeeeeeeeow!!" Needless to say, he quit.

Twillinger is a bit of an unusual name for the male lead in a 1950s American SF film. They usually went for something a bit more WASP-y and butch sounding. A Twillinger would normally be the whacky scientist or comic relief army private.

When you think about it, it's actually really strange that we didn't see a lot of single moms in the '50s. Considering how a lot of husbands died in 1945, you would think they'd be a lot more single moms, right?
@KRhetor
@KRhetor 4 жыл бұрын
Also a lot of single moms as a result of the Korean War. One of the things I liked about Stephen King's IT was it acknowledged how many kids grew up in fatherless households (as did King himself, although his dad was just a bum).

Parachuting into an atomic testing area in the water is nothing compared to how, in reality, a bunch of soldiers used to go to the desert only a few kilometers away from actual nuclear bomb tests and watch them detonate.
