@@jonahdav9589 Dude, listen. I agree with you. I read the books and goddamn it, does the show suck. But you have to understand that the show doesn't suck "because it's woke". @bigd5773 Жыл бұрын
@@mixed6365 sure, challenge accepted: Egwene saving herself without help. Egweine saving Rand and fighting Ishamael. Perrin not having arc. Moraine destroying all the ships. Playing fast and loose with their own rules. And lots of others. Now, this issue is that you will say all of those are due to poor writing, not wokeness. However, the question is why is the writing bad in a particular way. Is it because of lack of education or experience, lack of understanding of the source material, inability to collaborate well with multiple writers, or (woke) ideology? Most of the issues originate from the need to follow of the “unwritten rules of wokeness”. Women don’t need help, they can’t have a white man save them or do anything that they can’t do themselves but better, people are good the way they and therefore don’t need to change and therefore don’t get a character arc (ie you can’t have a story about a fat person that decides to be a great protector hero so they employ discipline and character growth to change who they are and forge their body into one suited for the task, instead they realize that their power lies in accepting the greatness of their greatness and making sure everyone else around them does as well), forced diversity which destroys the rich culture of the setting (not a complaint I heard from BS in this video but one many fans had), also woke ideology is not rooting in truth and facts but rather narrative and feelings, so whatever is convenient at the time is acceptable, leading to playing fast and loose with their own rules. Does that answer your question?
@mixed6365 Жыл бұрын
@@bigd5773 Honestly? No, not really. I'll actually agree with you on the whole Egwene thing, so there, at least you have a point about that plot line. But all other examples you have are you wanting to make It about "woke culture" (I actually laughed at "Perrin not havin am arc", like, how is THAT mess related at ALL with wokeness?) The fact you kmew I was gonna say most of those things aren't a "woke writing" problem shows that you recognize deep Down that you have to make some mental gymnastics to make that connection. Replace Egwene or Moiraine with white male characters and you'll see that their poor arcs and inconsistencies stil hold up, so would that still be woke? Once again, just to be clear. I am not defending the show and the moments and arcs you mentioned bug me just as much. Also, I'm not saying that the producers, cast dorectiors or whatever aren't "woke people". Of course they are, Rafe himself has a husband, but that in of itself isn't the problem. Incompetent writing is.

I have zero reference for WOT( I saw the first episode and thought it was a bad CW fantasy series and didn't continue) but Brandon Sanderson I'm familiar with as I'm a pretty big fan of his work, notably Mistborn and Stormlight. When Brandon says something doesn't work, I usually would be one to listen, considering his experience. And oh yeah; this guy FINISHED the WOT. An incredible honor he got and from what I heard; he did a good job, resolving as many plot, character elements as possible. So really if anything, Brandon is being nice but his criticisms should have been eye-opening for Rafe and everyone involved. This was the most cathartic stream of the last few years, and this was a truly outstanding highlight edit. Excellent work, yo. Shoutout to everyone for making it happen! The Wheel of Time deserves better, and all the criticisms of the show comes from the hope of improvement. And finally hearing a bit of criticism from all three (four?) of these gentlemen is well overdue. For my main criticism, whatever complaint for season length falls flat when compared to the ratio of adapted book material vs "originsl material", i'll call it. Filling gaps is one thing, but you shouldn't build a bridge out of mortar. 9:04 Slight correction to Brandon here, (and potential early book SPOILERS, while trying to keep em vague) Rand had *two of the best swordsmen in the world train him at this point in the series. Also, the Flame and the Void was perhaps more important than even the Forms taught by Lan. Then again, why even is a Heronmark blade important, anyway..? Thanks again for this video, yo!
@Perry_Wolf Жыл бұрын
Rand facing Turak is _THE ONLY_ time the Heron shows up on the handle of his sword. Every other scene with the sword in both season one and two, it's on the ricasso. He even has to stupidly _hold the blade,_ (laughably), in the finale fight, (if you can call it that), with Ishamael, in order have the Heron branded on his palm. Which means nothing in the show yet, just like the Horn of Bloody Valere meant nothing for it's reveal in EP08 of last season. And the ironically _STUPID_ thing with throwing the Heron on the handle so Turak can see it, is that it amounts to _NOTHING!!!!!_ Why have Turak notice it if they're not going to actually have a sword fight?!?!?! Rafe couldn't write anything good even if his life depended on it. Watching this on Dusty Wheel's channel I have to say I lost respect for Matt, (The Innkeeper), as he, in opposition to Sanderson himself, argued for the show more often than not. Perrin shouting to Mat that he has to get the Horn to Rand made one thing glaringly obvious to me, and that's the fact that nowhere in this episode, or a previous episode, do we learn that Perrin or Mat are aware Rand is in Falme. They had no idea he was there. Elayne be like, "I used to be an adventurer like you, until I took an arrow in the knee"......... Well put together, @Technically Mexican. "YOU GET...NOTHING!!!"

What is the point of being a consultant for a show if they NEVER listen to what you say and continually butcher the material? lmao.

I didn't read the books and even I felt surprised that it wasn't Nyneave who healed Rand - or anyone in this episode for that matter. I also didn't feel like the horn was set up well enough. I was sad when Hopper died, but maybe more because I love animals and less because of the relationship he had with Perrin. I honestly thought he wouldn't die because the relationship didn't feel like it had developed enough. It mostly consisted of Perrin telling Hopper to "stay", when he went somehwere. I personally didn't mind Egwane freeing herself because they made her arc this season about "will she break or won't she?" and to that it fits. Additionally, she started off feeling inferior to Nyneave and could now kinda prove just how strong she is. Nonetheless, it was weird how she could hold of Ishamael. It wasn't very believable that he couldn't do anything to get around that shield, not based on how he and Lanfear were set up. Overall I do agree that this finale didn't really land for me. There were many episodes this season which I enjoyed far more. And it seems pretty obvious that they do need more episodes, eight just isn't enough.

I made the mistake of believing Daniel was a shill when the first season was coming out. I have watched probably 90% of Daniel’s videos, and he is many things, but a shill he is not. Where I think he has a big blind spot is on politics. If political changes are made in a show or movie that Daniel agrees with (far leftism), he doesn’t criticize it at all. And a lot of people, but particularly those on the left, have that issue when critiquing art. I am a more conservative person and I hate when people are trying to preach a political message to me that I agree with. Keep politics away from adaptations. Every single aspect of this show is horrible and I think Daniel is too nice because a lot of the changes are tinged with politics, and so he doesn’t say anything. That said, he DEFINITELY criticizes the show, and has described it as mediocre, which is not what you would hear from a shill. Him not criticizing certain things makes him not totally objective, but it doesn’t make him a shill. He also very openly doesn’t like Amazon as a company. Matt from the dusty wheel is a MASSIVE wheel of time fan. There are very few that know more than him. But is also unfortunately, a massive shill. He’s also a big lefty like Daniel, but he lets it permeate every aspect of his mind, whereas Daniel can maintain a pretty respectable level of objectivity on most things. He fawns over everything Amazon and Rafe do. He basically has no real criticisms. Brando Sando is ALSO a pretty big lib, but he hardly lets it affect him at all in his criticism. The only aspect is that he doesn’t mention the skin colors and look of the cast and how inaccurate they are to the books, but if he said that he’d be canceled, so. Brandon is also too nice to the show. That’s not at all because he’s a shill, but because of proximity bias. At the end of the video that this video has cut up, he offers many praises for the show, and he did the same for the last season. They weren’t really substantive praises though. His criticisms are far more substantive and core to the actual show. Brandon is an endlessly nice person, and has met with all the creatives and the cast members many times. If you (the reader of this comment) had done the same and had been welcomed with open arms by those people, you would probably be more reticent to publicly attack with brutality. So Brandon is very nice, but his criticisms are stinging and cut to the core of the project. He is obviously even less nice at the end of season 2 review. He obviously does not like the show. Publicly he gave the show a 5 or 6 out of 10, so in reality he probably thinks it’s a 3 or 4. You can tell how frustrated and angry he is. Him watching this is very similar to me watching WOT or Rings of Power with people who hadn’t yet seen it. Do not mistake what this video is…he is absolutely hate watching the show in this video. He is cringing and apologizing and endlessly criticizing it. He obviously hates the show. So that was a really long comment, but whatever. That’s my take on how shilly they are. Brandon is nice because he knows the people who made it, but he is not a shill. Matt is undoubtedly a huge WOT fan but is a simp and a cuck for Amazon and Rafe. Daniel is politically biased, but not a shill. He knows what he’s talking about with storytelling and criticism.
@TechnicallyMexican8 ай бұрын
You are pretty spot on with everything here, but regarding Season 1 Daniel was a literal shill. He was paid by Amazon to hype the show, and it can with a non-disparagement clause. He mentions this in his review of ROP, where he had to consult a lawyer to figure out what he was legally allowed to say. He has since come out with more criticism, but it's a little too late after lying to his fans for so long. He is literally the reason I started reading the books and then stood by and did nothing while they got butchered on screen.
@gandalfthegrey71468 ай бұрын
@@TechnicallyMexican yes, Daniel was definitely hyping it up. But in his “retrospective” review of it, he was pretty critical. He obviously wasn’t happy about the demands made by Amazon and openly called them out on it. I think he was happy to support the show because he was invited to the red carpet and everything, but when they tried to control what he was saying, he realized that Amazon Prime is kinda evil. He definitely called them out for it, so I don’t know that I would call it pure shilling or lying to fans. And I mean, his immediate reaction after finishing the show was a 7/10, which would be considered completely average or perhaps slightly mediocre (if you’re going on an IMDB system of rating, which is what I naturally do). So he wasn’t hyping it to the moon. Then a month or two later, he dropped it to a 6/10, which is mediocre. Overall what I’ve got from him is that he’s far too nice about the show, but is not a total sellout, as he gives real and substantive criticisms of the story and characters. I definitely have to stay away from anything political he does (which is why I don’t follow him on twitter), but overall I’ve really enjoyed his channel. And similarly to you, he is the entire reason I got into WOT and Sanderson and Modern fantasy, while I was an elitist who wouldn’t read anything other than LOTR. I actually commented on several of his videos on the show that he was selling out and being a total shill, but I have since revised my stance on it.

Thanks for sharing this clip with us. If I might give this advice, maybe you should cut back on your clips inserts quite a bit. You seem to want to punctuate every sentence from the original clip with your own inserts, and it distracts from what Brandon and company are saying. Let them have 15 sec of discussion or so and then punctuate it with a relevant clip. Also, we don't need the oldschool fuzzy channel transition. It cuts the flow of the discussion even more. Good luck with finding a better balance with you inserts!

I have to admit, it felt really good to see some of my own concerns and complaints about the show mirrored almost exactly by Brandon Sanderson. I am so tired of the unearned Girl Power BS in modern media. I absolutely despised the first scene in season 1 episode 1 where Nynaeve pushes Egwene into the river. It just felt so out of character for Nynaeve to do something like that. I felt Season 2 redeemed a lot of where Season 1 went wrong, and was more than satisfied with the events of season 2, up until episode 8. Then it completely backslid to the garbage that had been season 1. I like what Sanderson said, about the overarching narrative of Wheel of Time. "You can't do it alone." It would be nice if the show writers would acknowledge that. Each character has their own theme, their own story arc, and own personalities and methods to go with it. I LOVE Mat in season 2. It felt like the Mat from the books.

For all the issues I have with WoT (like it clearly being written with a 80s male PoV on women rather than someone who treats everyone as equals, like the WTF chivalry from men to women in a world where the women are the ones with all the power and infantilizing men), this show is clearly a thousand times worse than the source material it completely butchers at every turn. Rand having to deal with becoming a channeller and slowly going mad? Nope. Mat doing Mat things? Sure, treated like the rogue in that terrible DnD movie from the 90s/early 2000s. Perrin? Well, even in the books he didn't have much to do with the plot but here he might as well not exist at all rather than be butchered (just cut him from the story, you don't lose much since Egwene doesn't need him to protect her anyway, she could have won against the crows by looking at them funny!). Nynaeve? Is she even supposed to do anything in the show? Because she looks like she could become a non channelling warder at this point... Egwene? She gets the level of power Rand needs an angreal to perform at in the early books, she's barely trained but beats a Forsaken! Rand in the books barely works already and he's like 4x more powerful than her because he's born the most powerful channeller since the Wheel needs its' hero to save the world from the DO and is obsessed with giving him all these responsibilities and making him mad in ten different ways. But Egwene here gets to be Dragon levels of powerful and reality warping Ta'veren with none of the downsides. I think the any% speedrun analogy I made in another comment is very valid here, someone hacked Egwene's script and used a glitch to give her Callindor's passive effect as a permanent boost to her power (and to her ego...ene) from the beginning for her to do rand's job in his stead and since she's a woman she won't have any opposition from the White Tower like Rand would, everyone will kiss her ass and she will put a damane collar onto the Dark One who decides to take a physical form just for her to do so. Really, it's like they took a look at Egwene being the SPOILER amyrlin because Aes Sedai thought she'd be a good puppet to get Rand under control SPOILER END and decided to just go with Egwene being uber powerful and always right (without ever being proven wrong) from the very beginning, without any character development for her, she never struggles, she breaks the rules of the a'dam because it looks cool for 2 seconds instead of getting saved to get her revenge and push Rand against the Seanchan Empire, if they wanted to rewrite that, and her taking part in its' annihilation (wish fulfillment fanfiction, but at least it follows the rules of the universe, and the Seanchan were better villains than the actual villains). Hell this show's version of Egwene looks like AoL Lanfear get petty revenge on the world for refusing to give her a 3rd name and causing the end of the world, here Egwene wants revenge on the world and decides to steal Rand's role in the story, to be more powerful than him out of nowhere and to be the one beating the bad guys without much training. Seems like she stole her 3 male friends' Ta'veren traits.

This show isn't its own thing. It is a television adaptation of the Wheel of Time novels. That's how it was marketed, that's how it was sold, and that's why people tuned in. To adapt it so poorly that it isn't even the same story anymore shouldn't be given a pass. It gives the talentless hacks that made this show and their ilk license to keep doing the same thing in the future. It's time to stop sugar-coating it. People are pissed that the properties they love are being systematically re-written, ripped-off, or just plain retconned into worse versions of their former selves, all for the sake of a few dollars and some Hollywood producer's already overinflated ego. I'm glad videos like this - voicing displeasure with such flagrant abuses of beloved stories - are becoming more commonplace, but I think this was still too polite for what this garbage deserves. I think people should stop making excuses for this stuff, leave honest feedback, and above all else, stop spending their hard earned money and limited time on products that don't deliver what they promise.

It is so disappointing that we finally get an adaptation of the books and it is being done by people that seemingly lack logic, vision, and talent, but still think they are better writers than the authors that sold millions of each one of these books. Wheel of time is not Game of Thrones and that tone is all wrong for it, it is much closer to Lord of the Rings and the people responsible for this show should have taken a page out of Peter Jackson's book on how to adapt this type of book series to make it entertaining and successful. Hopefully some day someone talented will come along and do a good adaptation of Wheel of time, live action or animated, that will stay true to the books but I am afraid this horrible adaptation may kill any chance of seeing a quality interpretation of the books in the future.
