For some reason whenever I'm walking alone, a random line of dialogue will often come to mind, and off of that I'll have full conversations between characters I'm making up and voicing to myself, and it sometimes helps to come up with ideas.

Here's a tip. Coughing into your hand when you have a sore throat, and then using that hand to distribute candy to your students, is a great way reduce your class ;) (Very nich lectures though!)

You think "this is flippin GREEEEAAAAAATTTTT!" as you're writing the first four chapters. Then you get to Chapter five and go "....aaaaand I don't know what to do now." Then all those little jobs around the house you used to hate suddenly take on a massive appeal... right about the time you'd normally be writing your thing. And then a shiny new idea comes along, and you look guiltily over your shoulder at the one still waiting for you and hear yourself say "It won't hurt to work on something else for a while - I'll come back to it again soon, absolutely, no doubt.." And then you sweep it quietly under the carpet of your hard drive, whistling nonchalantly - and pretend it was never there at all while you work on your new one. At least, that's how it's gone for me in the past :)

I usually do two things: I dwell on how utterly awesome I am, letting my immaculate wisdom and features bleed onto the paper. I make insane, self-righteous claims about myself, as if it were so easy, and then try to live up to them.

It's not book format, granted, but many recent shows like Adventure Time or Rick and Morty seem to succeed in managing both crazy, random humour and epic good plots and characters, and are fairly popular with adults. So maybe it's just a niche that just got found? What methods have they "invented" to make something work when it didn't in the past? Or am I missing Sanderson's point here?

Funny how all these comments are about gummy bears. I was glad when he acknowledged that he shouldn't be coughing into his hand and then passing out gummy bears... but then a few minutes later he started passing out gummy bears with that same hand lol. He's evolved a lot over the past 12 years

I know that he has personal reasons to promote Robert Jordan, but the example he gave with Suan Sanshe and the fish heads is ridiculous. Everyone with any experience of WoT knows that these character quirks which started out as slightly annoying quickly became unbearable and replaced all characterisation. You should define characters through what they are, not what they do.
