It was a shrewd indictment of the university's hiring practices, which obviously do not seek out diverse viewpoints as stated by the Columbia President, but rather operate as echo chambers for far leftist thought.

But during the last thirty years, their faculties at many of the most selective schools decided that it was their role to re-engineer the societies of the future through a Marxist indoctrination of students that explained all disparities of outcome as the result of socio-economic or racial preferences and oppressions. Yet while faculties were on this Crusade, their administrations pursued a different course, one that was driven by ingratiating themselves with government policies so as to obtain the massive Federal funding that these schools needed to fund their expansion and operation. But now the divergent objectives within the university structure are biting these shools in the hind quarters. The oppression of the Palestinians cannot be ignored by Professors or their students, yet the University administrators in the US cannot bite the hand that feeds them, the Federal government bodies whose representatives are bought and paid for in large part by campaign donors affiliated with the Israeli government. The unwillingness of university administrators to condemn the genocide being committed against innocent Palestinian people, half of whose victims have been children, is a most blatant form of support for oppression. Hence, university faculties and students feel compelled to protest the hypocrisy of administrators who promote the opposition to oppression in the classroom while remaining silent to their own government's support of it. Its a classic battle of principle versus money.
