Before I went from a 3 year old base iPhone 13 to a iPhone 16 Pro Max, I thought jumping to a base 16 would be fine, and considering how much the base 16 benefits from not being as separated from the Pros in terms of features, the Pro Motion display and greater brightness of the Pro Max has convinced me to stick with it. Also the Pro Max (which I know has a slightly different situation than the other Pro iPhones) has some INSANE battery life compared to what I used to get from my base 13 (both with worn out and back when it had a new battery) Of course, comparing a Pro Max to a base 13 is VERY different than a 16 Pro and a base 16, which doesn’t have brightness differences.

I actually prefer the non-pro this year. The pro is so heavy that it hurts my hands sometimes. The non-pro also has better color options. 60hz is a bummer, but it doesn’t matter much for me on a phone.

I get what you're saying, but you are already spending a good amount of money for a device that you may or may not use for a few years. I'd rather spend the extra couple hundred and get those additional features that will make the experience that much better. I'd spend $200 alone just to have the 120hz display. I had the 12 Pro Max and loved it (just updated to the 16 Pro Max), but I remember my Mom got a 13 Pro and when I used it, it was so hard to go back to my 60hz screen!! I am loving my new phone. I have my Dad my 12 Pro Max to replaced his 8 Plus. He's super happy that he can now update past iOS 16.

Awesome video! Sounds like Apple is trying to make the base model just as good as the pro model. The one thing I like about the iPhone Pro is it has one terabyte of storage at the maximum and you can only get 512 GB on the base model. I went with a one terabyte model when I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro last year. I plan to keep it for two or three years.

Everyday objective differences that matter to most, IMO/experience: 1. Cost; 2. Weight; 3. Battery life; 4. Camera(s) capabilities. The 120 vs 60 refresh ? Yes, the screen-touching experience also is measurably different between the two models. It’s really a matter of what one can use vs. what is offered. The pro is amazingly versatile and powerful in the right hands. It’s wasted technology otherwise.

I also think the camera control button is very underrated, as someone who is forced to take a lot of pictures of my partner on travels. I found the camera control button to be a very useful shortcut to launch the camera. I have never been able to make myself use the camera shortcut on the lock screen or the swipe left gesture. tbh - promotion alone is worth the extra cost to me. It used to be all the other "pro" features reserved for the pro phones but now that they are mostly all the same.. i still can't justify not having promotion. I've gotten so used to AOD too and having the ability to quick glance at the time/if alarm is set/weather and battery widget that I can't ever go back. Sucks thats come down to effectively just promotion but it is what it is. I'm not a "pro videographer" or big gamer so none of that extra power applies for me.

I don't care about 60Hz refresh. I'm used to 60Hz for over the past decade. I don't care about the new buttons. The Camera Control button is particularly useless. I don't care about the new colors. And, frankly, I liked last year's pastel colors better. I don't care about Apple Intelligence. It's too gimmicky and unreliable. I use my phone camera strictly as a point-and-shoot, so I don't care about the fancy camera features. I almost never transfer data via USB. I'm also not a serious gamer. As a casual user, I recharge my phone every two or three days. As an iPhone 15 user, the iPhone 16 offers me very, very little. The iPhone 16 release this year was a massive disappointment. That said, I agree that the iPhone 16 is the better choice over the iPhone 16 Pro models. And, by the way, if you're like me above, you can save $100 by buying the iPhone 15. It still gives you the dynamic island, USB-C, same bright screen, and same camera sensor.

So far, I love the bezels and refresh rate (even though promotion has nothing "pro" about it, bring 120hz to the 800 dollar phone please). Honestly, I'm not that impressed by the cameras, and I don't see any major improvements in basic photos and videos. But the battery life. So good. As for AI, I feel like most of the features are not useful for me except for genmoji and visual intelligence. I think apple intelligence should incorporate a way to search your screen, sort of like circle to search on android. Is it just me, or does the 1 nit brightness seem not that low? I can't tell a major difference between the 16p and 13 in that field

I completely forgot that the refresh rate was a thing. I got the 16 Pro coming from the 15 and I use them both and I don’t notice anything. I got the 15 last year instead of the 15 Pro because I thought I didn’t need any of the extra features, plus the 15 has the absolute best pink I’ve ever seen on a phone - really the perfect pink - but I was disappointed this year to see that Apple intelligence wouldn’t be available on my phone. For a whole year I felt no disadvantage at all for not having the Pro, and then suddenly I had a phone that wouldn’t get the very next big feature. I like to keep the same phone for at least two or three years (previous to the 15 I had the XS), and iPhones are great at that, but I’m afraid that maybe the trick now is that the non-pro basic model is perfect, ever preferable to the Pro because of the price, but only for the first year, then it’ll feel obsolete much sooner than the Pro.

I’m truly disappointed in Apples stuttering release of iOS 18 this year. I’ve heard it is expected to be “complete” (whatever that means) until the second quarter of 2025. Being visually impaired and a voice user, the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz is negligible because I am scrolling exclusively with my finger. I considered getting a plus because I've had the 14+ and liked it and in some ways wish I had instead of the 16 Pro Max. Is the promax a bad phone, no, but many things on the promax I'll never use and will never use and almost wish that I had gotten the 16+ because of that.
