when i was 12 yrs old i saw them in person along with the house guards, who are on the horses and they all left a lasting impression on me and i will never forget seeing them, great footage and glad you had the chance of being there and seeing it as well and sharing it on you tube

My father law is an Irish bloke who was in the Irish guards. My wife was born in Germany. I am Irish myself. He is in the british legion in Ireland. My own dad was an Irish UN peacekeeper in the Congo. Plenty of slaggin goes on here in Ireland at family occasions.

Well, there is some more happening, like the sentries are being changed at the sentry posts while the band is playing, and the guard officers are discussing stuff like if there is any situations the new guard officer needs to be aware of and such. While the posting is mostly ceremonial with true guard duties being provided by the metropolitan police, it is considered an operational guard posting and in event of an incident in their specific posting, they will respond. It has been questioned whether their services should be extended to other part of the palace where the metropolitan police have had a couple of incidents.

On the other hand they don't have lots to do in terms of guarding at the moment, so obviously it is rather ceremonial at the moment. Having said that they are still soldiers and should not be fucked with

@@laziboy009 well actually no, guards at the Tower of London protect help protect the Crown Jewels. Those guns are loaded, and the bayonet is real, if you trespass where your not meant to after being told 3 times, if the police don’t get involved, they are legally allowed to stab you with the bayonet.

It used to have a height restriction but these days it's open to anyone. The tallest men are normally put in No 1 Company, Queens Company. My dad was a Grenadier Guardsman so I know a fair bit from him, very little has changed. 🇬🇧🇬🇧✌✌

Nah. Their height doesn't really matter in any of the guards regiments. They are active duty soldiers first and foremost, with all the reputation the history of their battalion to uphold to that. That's Scotsguards there. Fun fact: They have an entire company )c company) that is nicknamed "the rabbits" which has all the shortest guys in it. Those short ones still meet the tight military requirements required to join the guards and keep up with their leggier companions.

You’ll find most senior NCO’s don’t have their bayonet fixed. This is because they are commonly doing duties such as closing and opening gates, detailing briefs via clipboard etc - therefore to make the rifle less cumbersome, they don’t fix their bayonet. Hope that helps :)

Very interesting and at the same time, confusing. I'm used to American drill and I never realized just how different British drill was from ours.The two things that I found odd was the way the officer of the old guard sort of paced back and forth before the new guard arrived and the way certain people fell out of formation seemingly at random. I also wonder how those officers see out from underneath their shakos, they seem to be so low over their eyes it doesn't seem like they could see out unless or they're seeing through holes or slits in the shakos.

My understanding about the Officer pacing is to display they are sober and capable of carrying out their duties. The Bearskins (not Shakos) may appear to be obscuring vision, but they don't actually prohibit you too much, as they are washed and brushed very regularly (yes, it's real Black Bear fur).

The officer pacing up and down is doing something known as “perambulating”. He is showing the “enemy” that he is not afraid, hence his relaxed posture and the way he holds his sword. You may notice how he always turns with his back to the “enemy”

The white are actual belts used for equipment\utility, part of the uniform. The red "belts" are actually sashes, used to designate specific positions of authority.

Nope; this is the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. The guards do get inspected before going on parade if that’s what you mean, but that’s no official ceremony in itself.

It's not a matter of equality so much it is of military practicality, I should think. There aren't as many recruits these days, sadly, and on the other side, a soldier's height doesn't much matter in their ability to do their duty.
