When the markets of the old economy were shocked by crisis and depression, the big trusts crumbled and most oligarchs lost their power. Out of this chaos, the shadow king rose. After accumulating nearly all means of production in the key sectors of enterprise, he achieved, what central bankers never could. He brought moderation into the markets and layed the ground for continous progress without any interruptions. Every transaction was controlled by the keen surveillance of his elders and the conciles of nobles, who used the latest calculator machines and complex mathematic formulas to compute the best policy, which granted the most profit to the empire and its economy. The shadow king even started to hide his wealth and power to not disturb the evolution of his markets and truly became a shadow. But although jobs were plentiful and wages continued to rise, the people learned, that all the wealth became meaningless or even detrimental to them and they could not stop the self feeding machinery of business and power. The merciless logic of the markets hollowed out their souls and all the prosperity was turned into a golden cage, to which only the shadow king himself possessed the keys.

Good to see I'm not the only one writing small stories for some of Mr. Fiechter's songs. I saw the Shadow Empire as being less an overt force and more a cabal comparable to the groups who conspiracy theorists say are trying to take over the world but I like your description. Kind of strange where near the end where you misspelled "market" but I still really enjoy yours, could you give me some feedback on the one I wrote?

The Secret Evil Society! That is what I thought when I saw "Steampunk" and "Shadow Empire" together. The Secret Evil Society is a faction in Civilization II's steampunk scenario. and I could see this music representing what the world would be like if they prevailed. I also love what you wrote. I always enjoy reading the little stories that you include for each song. Keep it up, and thanks for the great music! ^^

Smoke fluttered about the room like translucent butterflies, the stench of opium nearly causing Horz to pass out, only staying conscious out of his mutual distrust for the men, and women, who sat alongside him. "Care to elaborate as to why you encouraged the uprising in Gzar, Cuvh?" Faythah asked, a stream of smoke trailing up from his mouth as though he were one of the Longshen of far off Sathak. "The chaos caused by it will force Gzar to decentralize, loosen regulations, and in the ashes, with our newfound influence, recentralize authority around our... allies." Cuvh replied, his thick Izakhlan accent melding with that of the arrogance of the aristocrat Cuvh pretended to be. "And pray tell when the uprising will be crushed?" Llevia questioned, lisping through her harelip only for a messenger enter the room not long after. "Not long now." Cuvh replied, a smug smile tugging at the ends of his lips. The messenger boy shifted uncomfortably owing not just to the powerful eyes that fell on him, but the lustful leering of the monstrous Pval, who smiled at the boy as though he were a piece of Tauythu steak. "My lords," the boy said, trying not to stutter as he spoke, "the provisional leader of the self-titled 'Proletarian Republic of Gzar,' Charfo Unzo has been killed in an operation by a joint-force of Zanath Police Forces, 91st Windschützen, and your 3rd Shock Battalion." Satisfied at the words, Cuvh leaned back in his chair, raising his hands, his false teeth showing through his smile. "About a year from now the uprising will have collapsed, without Unzo's guidance the various Commanders and Commissars will turn on each other and they won't be able to organize an effective counter attack. And yet to protect it's borders, Gzar will entrust our subsidiaries to put down the remnants, manage the schools and taxes owing to the loss of so many of their officials, and then we can 'lobby' them to recentralize the nation to our benefit." It seemed good. Too good. Indeed what came out of the boy's mouth next shattered Cuvh's smile. "In addition sir, a police strike force were able to cut off the escape of most of the Revolutionary Council. Those that weren't killed have been captured and have been sent to execution." The boy said, looking as though he were unsure to run or faint. "Thank you, child. You may leave." Horz said calmly, prompting the boy to run. Cuvh turned to Horz as though to plead, just as the Shadow Council pressed their buttons in unison to kill Cuvh, causing an electric current to run through his body, turning his white suit black, lighting his false hair and metals on fire, and melting the flesh from his bones within a minute all to Cuvh's agonized scream. To be honest he had done a good job, Cuvh, but with that slight opportunity to be rid of such a powerful and experienced rival, Horz, and the other Council members, rid themselves of Cuvh. A few seemed genuinely angry at Cuvh, thinking he had failed completely. Not quite. They would have less time to consolidate power in Gzar but still. At once, the remaining Council members pushed the keys for them all to leave their chairs, the restraints leaving. "Comrades, long live the Shadow Empire." Horz said calmly. "Long live the Shadow Empire." His comrades replied in unison.
