I was a marksman in my conscript time in Slovakia with standard SVDN-1. Couple of experiences: 1. recoil hurts, you better press it to the shoulder 2 sniper bullets were expensive so we used Warsaw treaty machine gun bullets 7,62x54, ok for up to 400m - could pierce scaffolding iron pipe on that distance 3.Original optic was good and one could use iron sights without removing the optics 4 it had bayonett so the use was more marksman than sniper 5 trigger group spring could get bent when one pulled the bolt back while on safety - IMO design flaw - happened to me. 6 And yes I was the coolest looking guy on every picture :-)

I think an SVT-40 video would be great. I happen to have one that I purchased in 1994 at a gun show for $300. I know a lot of people out there don't even know this rifle exists and a lot only have seen it in video games. When I bought mine there were several on the table. I chose the one with a different muzzle break. Many years later I did some research on it and found that it was originally an AVT-40 select fire. The AVT's were built to ease a machine gun shortage but they couldn't take the sustained automatic fire, so when they broke they were rebuilt and put into SVT-40 configuration. I read that only 3500 were imported, so that makes them pretty rare.

In 2006 I was in the military doing National Service, and my issue was an original 1968 Izhmash manufactured SVD (at the time it was exactly twice my age). It was heavily worn but with 7N1 rounds still shot decently. About that scope, it has illuminated reticle, and battery you can actually fit is LR44 1,5V "button cell" with a little diy.

The Soviets did in fact manufacture various types of 7.62x54R ammo with special uses in mind. There were variants meant for accurate shooting and armour piercing, unlike the majority of ammo that was for general purpose use in PKMs etc.
@selonianth

There is good ammo for it, yes. And they even removed the bayonet lugs on some later models of it because frankly you don't need it. It doesn't really improve the accuracy *that* much. About 15 years or so ago, I scratched that itch with a TIGR fitted with most of the proper military add ons (flash hider, stock and handguard, etc.). @@triarii_00 If i recall right, cant be bother to dig the box to find my Chinese JJJ PSO type optic, but that can use two LR44 batteries to get into 3V in original battery compartment and my Soviet 1PN58 night sight is really easy to modify to use two AA battery holder in original battery compartment with peace of foam. Also just to brag a little bit, its complete kid with case, filters and all. Only thing missing are original batteries that have died probably few decades ago and charger for those, but everything else including original cleaning cloths. Pretty nice collectors item, but dear god its horrible to actually use. Just 15minutes looking trough it and when you stop everything is looking like in sepia on your right eye that messes left side too and this takes hour or two to balance back. How snipers handle that i dont know. Maybe if you had light intensifier for your left eye too effect would not be that horrid or its individual thing like VR motion sickness and i'm suffering from it worse than others, gotta ask buddys to test it out to see how it effects them.

You guys would probably get a heart attack if you saw Mosin then. Not to mention apparently you have no idea that military uses either SVDS(collapsible stock) or SVU(bullpup version) since the same time when purpose build DMRs became a thing in NATO(hello there, SR-25). However apparently someone believes that mounting scope onto M14 made it a DMR when M21 was half assed into existence:D P.S.: and that is primarily because US didn't realize that snipers are "kind of needed" even in modern war until the late half of Vietnam War. Meanwhile soviets had thousands of renowned snipers during WWII and just decided that continuing to use what worked was a good idea. _Surprising, right?!_

It's not a derivative) and then you, Brandon, literally drop the ball on my head and reveal that's an NDM-86/Type 79. Brutal. Will keep watching to see if you got the scope and bayonet, too. As much as I love the OG Dragunov, I would rather have the updated and improved NDM 86 model with the rifling twist rate changed to make normal weight ammo more accurate. The original Russian barrels had a twist rate for heavyweight exploding ammo. This is why YOU Brandon need to make an American-made Dragunov, get tons more of them into the hands of people that have wanted them forever.

I admired this work of art while serving in the army. to my great regret, my eyesight did not allow me to become a sniper and I ran with an AK-74 Kalashnikov assault rifle. The external similarity of the SVD and AK is explained by the Soviet Arms School, where all the designers studied and naturally borrowed the best ideas from each other.

This was basically an auto rifle chambered in 50 BMG. Only like 50 were made. A prop was used in Robocop 2 and apparently his shop designed the extended barrel of Robocop's sidearm to make it look beefier. Look up videos on youtube of the thing in action.

I'm glad you're talking about it correctly, because so many people refuse to accept that this was absolutely a sniper rifle, designed for that purpose. Just because we like to think of modern "sniper" platforms as being weapons that can reach out and murk somebody at 2000+ yards has absolutely no bearing on the design intent here. Even the naming SVD (snayperskaya vintovka Dragunova) backs up it's purpose. If this kind of weapon were designed today it would likely be referred to as a DMR instead, but that concept didn't really exist in the 1960's.

I like the new 9,3mm SV-s! If they can use hunting ammo that means a lot!!! But once you fire Ex-Yu, Serbian made M76 PASP (Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle or Po-russki: poluavtomaticheskaya snayperskaya vintovka) in much more SLICK and SIGNIFICANTLY shorter rifle and has a rail that is much easier to find mounts for! Both here in EU and in US! Its twist and caliber makes it wind-resistant, better energy-carrying and intuitively falling chambering in 8mm Mauser/7,92mm IS and not so finicky in the bullet choice as SVD! I mean,it can fire API,Tracer,Ball and even the awful MG ball (or goat-crapammo as we call it!) not to mention most semi-decent Hunting Ammo and Sub-Sonic! SVD is...JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOVED IT! And had more than I need! LOL But finding the right ammo for it was...nightmare! It is like shopping for shoes for some princess! I bought in bulk tin of Russian Sniper-AP ammo and it was..a nightmare! One could not fire it at all w/o stoppage, another one could had a 3 LtBOA accuracy at 100m (3 LtBOA= 3 Loosely thrown Buckets Accuracy at 100m), and the third one performed...WELL!!! And all 3 were Russian-made beauties with very close serial numbers! The same goes for hunting bullets! But once you find the right one... the only solution is hand reloading using those bullets or copy of the same by the Lapua! But again...Bulgarian copy that has SVD furniture but M76 action and ammo is LIKE...THE WORST THING AMONG EX-COMM-BLOCK "SNIPER" RIFLES YOU CAN PUT YOUR HANDS ON! DDR AK-74 with railing is MUCH MUCH better DMR/Infantry Support Sniper than that c++p! RIGHT?! Greetings from Croatia! ;-D

Looks a lot like the Chinese type 81, but in 7.62x54 instead of 7.62x39. It's also a short stroke gas system like the SKS, with an AK style rotating bolt and a last round hold open. AK mags can be modified to work in them, but the bolt will no longer stay open after the last round. Oddly enough, here in Canada AK's have been prohibited for decades, but we can get some other cool stuff, at least for now.

What I know for sure from the army is the bayonet on the SVD has an important pedagogical value. On the shooting range, if you don't score enough to pass, you'll have to fix the bayonet, crawl up to the target (the distance is usually anywhere between three and seven hundred meters), stab the target with a bayonet right in the bullseye and then crawl back. After a couple iterations accuracy increases dramatically. I always almost felt sorry for the poor bastards who had to do that.

Firing from a prepared position like a fortification, one can fire all you wish at foes approaching. But a bayonet is useful when a fella tries to slip through the doorway with an SMG limbered.

I bought an airsoft SVD 10 years ago and it came with a legitimate PSO illuminated scope. When the battery died I thought all was lost because I was unable to open the battery compartment. One day about 2 years after the battery died I was able to get it open and I found a AA power cell jammed into the compartment. I guess it works if you just force it. The thing was leaking but luckily no corrosion was found inside the scope. If you’re brave enough. You can get that reticle to glow again.

A friend of my dad's got a Romanian PSL, which is another variant of the SVD/Dragunov, brought it out to a range day we had organized for Veteran's day this year. That has to be the most fun I've ever had with a 7.62x54 rifle, and surprisingly pretty pleasant to shoot, had a spring loaded butt plate if you'd believe it, though after a bit of shooting I did notice it was starting to shove my glasses off my face with the scope lol. Edit: As Brandon corrected, its based off the AK more than the SVD but still has the same vibe. Still a great experience shooting it
