quick question. i have an old 1988 135hp mercury. it has a 8 pin. I've seen some similar online but they say works on 1994 and older. But they look identical. Im just curious if there is a big difference in the 2. They both have 8 pins and power trim.

Hey, Brandon. Great video. I watched it 4 times but there is no way I can split the remote on my 70HP Johnson controller. It appears to be hung up on the bottom where you firs split the halves. Maybe hanging up on the warning horn?

Naw, probably on the alignment pins on the two case halves. keep prying, but slowly around the entire case. Like, if you get the top open a pinch, put a wedge in there and keep going at another side. Some type of wedge is important to not loose your progress. This is the least of your problems, usually when they are that stuck the hardware inside also isnt coming off. The case halves can be purchased and replaced. The insides are whats important.

hey Brandon do you see at 17:32 when you have both controllers lying next to each other..the copper (retainer plate) on the remote on the left..on the right remote it looks like steel, one is held down with a bolt and one with a screw..is that because someone broke the screw off the one on the left and replaced with the bolt? That's my situation..just wondering if you can replace it with anything that will hold down the plate? Thanks

Thank you Brandon, I got 2 problems and I can’t figure it out. The problems are : 1) at engine off it doesn’t wanna click in reverse, engine running no problem. ( I think when I pulled down the lower leg to change the seals I must have moved the shift rod ? But why it wouldn’t work at engine off but no problem when the engine is running?) 2) when cruising along on the water, the forward control only works in the first 10% of its run and again to go faster ( a little) I have to put the lever all the way down ( the last 90% of the lever run) . It looks like from 11% to 90% the lever is doing nothing, it’s all play. Today I pulled the controller apart ( that’s why I am on your video) and looks like the cables are fine at 100% in movement back and forth. I can’t see where the problem is due to the fact that the control box is split in two part and I never know “what’s not working” while both parts are as whole. I hope I have described the problems accurately so you can understand what I mean . Thanks in advance and thank you for your videos ! You help thousands of ppl

What kind of engine do you have? The not shifting while not running is normal. Without the engine running, the gears aren't moving, and usually don't align correctly with the shifter. Spin the prop while shifting and it'll go right in. As for the controller, disconnect the cables on the engine, and check for full movement - that'll tell you if it's the engine or controller. Past that, I'll need the engine year/hp and controller type. I'm guessing it's a linkage adjustment issue.

Brandon I'm hoping you can help me out. I have twin yamaha's and my forward controls are not opening the throttles at the same rate. They start out fine at first but then the more you give it gas the larger the discrepancy between throttles. When I run at high speed the right handle has to be more forward that the left for both engines to have the same rpm. I thought at first that the throttle/cable parts/levers on the outboards could be loose or worn out. But they are fine. Both have been synchronized at neutral and at idle. Both idle at 700 rpm.

Hello, thanks for posting video.. I have a question if you dont mind. I have an older 20 foot powerboat that used to have a Johnson outboard engine in it. I have now replaced the original engine with an Evinrude V4 110 hp.from about the same era ( 1988-1992 ) The Evinrude engine came with a OMC controller but i was wondering if the Johnson Command center controller that is already installed in the boat will work the Evinrude.. I know you don’t usually answer questions, but here goes. I have this control box. The problem, you have to push the throttle 3/4 forward before it engages the carb. I tried new cam with zero improvement. Everything seems tight. My next attempt will be new cables. But I don’t really think that’s the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Riley

The red thing was/is a safety lanyard. Pretty important, boat cant run without it. (if the controller uses one that is)

Brandon, I wonder if you can advise me more on the Idle Lever side. I'm having an issue where it is either all out or all off, seem like it sticks or something. Partway up doesn't do anything, then a little further and it's full blast. Bringing it down, it stays that way to a point then seems to suddenly bring the idle all the way down.

Could be on the engine, the throttle levers grease has a tendency to turn to sticky glue; they still work, but not very well. I would check those first.

Thanks, I'll try that. It's a fairly new engine (old, but never used before I bought it). I got the controller from a guy that did work at the dock for me. Where do you buy parts for this shifter? I took mine out in too cold of weather and the shift cable froze and I. Broke the teeth on the big circular mechanism inside. And now it wont even turn over. Is there something that is a safety switch from keeping the starter from turning over.

Could be any key, if it was recently replaced, it might have a number on the front (where the key goes in) If not, you'll need to replace the ignition switch: amzn.to/2QbZLAJ Of, for a hair more, buy a key set and just figure out what key you need: ebay.to/2EZwY1o Problem with that, is if it has had a Sierra or other aftermarket lock in it, those keys wont work.

that is the overheat alarm. You need to fix the outboard's cooling. ..or, if you have an oil tank, it could be low on oil. (its a warning horn)

Hey Brandon maybe you can help me out i have a 90 hp v4 2 stroke evinrude now i replaced the motor as the mechanic said my other motor needed a complete carb rebuild now he is trying to say this one needs it too. Anyhow what is happening when i put the boat in the water. The rpms are high but doesnt seem to have power to go very fast almost like its slipping into neutral when i shift into high but when in shifts into lower gear it dies about 10 to 15 kmh but hight nothing is it possibly the OMC controls need a rebuild as the other guy who bought my motor said he hooked it up and working fine so what would cause the problem in my OMC THROTTLE CONTROL i was going to get another OMC controls but worried that it may just have the same problem any ideas

I have a cylindrical plastic piece about 3/8 x 3/8 that fell out. I think fits in the neutral throttle mechanism. But the main problem seems to be getting the plastic throttle disc up against what appears to be some sort of neutral switch. I will watch the video again, perhaps I missed something. Mine is an early 80's model

Hello i have a 84 johnson with the same controls as you have in video. I bought the boat off an older gentleman and the control box was apart do to having a plastic piece fixed. I put the control back together and took the boat out for test drive and the boat ran rough. I kept getting a electric shock when i touched the metal on the control box. So i took the control box back apart the next day to look for bare wires or anything that would cause a shock. I taped a couple wires and put it back together. Know i have no spark on any of the cylinders but i still get a shock through the control box. The safety kill switch doesn't work neither. This is my first boat and im getting frustrated. Just trying to get on the water with kiddos

On the engine wiring harness. Find the red plug, flow it up the engine, and find a small red round thing. it may be black with dirt, its about the size of a chapstick tube, cut in half.

Like an idiot, I went to start up the motor to run some water through it. Didn't realise kids playing around put the throttle up so I put the choke up to start, then noticed throttle up so like a knob I slammed it down with the choke up and it broke a tooth. Trying to super glue it lol but I doubt its gonna work lmao. I think I have to buy another sigh

That sucks. Not as bad as rebuilding a lower unit only to forget to add oil and run it all morning before it exploded bad; but still.
