Removing a powerhead from a 1978 115 HP Johnson engine. ...I probably should have used the rear hook.

Should use the flywheel tool and the provided lifting eyelet on the motor

Hey do you know if I can swap out a 225 evinrude(2000) powerhead onto a 225 johnson(1994)? The evinrude runs well but has a long 30 inch shaft. I need the johnson with the 20 inch shaft

You have to remove the Lower Unit to change the powerhead?

I have a 1979 100hp johnson javelin. It runs pretty bad at low speeds on a load but really good at fast speeds on a load. How can i make it run better at low speeds?

you might have a bad spark plug wire, check them all for continuity. mine did the same thing. good luck

Hey Brandon my crankcase breather hose has milky grey oil/fuel coming out of it. I replaced the head gaskets exhaust plate gaskets. would there be anywhere else that could cause water to get into the crankcase? It’s79 johnson 115

I have a 1985 Johnson 115 that I need to change the lower cover on. Looking at your video it looks like it's a requirement to pull the powerhead, yes? Am I gonna need any gaskets to do the swap?

Great information, I want to swap a 1988 88spl powerhead to a 1976 115, do I need to remove carbs,electronics,etc to get to bolts?
@BrandonsGarage7 жыл бұрын
Nope! Butt you will have to diconnect fuel lines, and ground straps. Pull the shift rod pin, and undo the lower cover mounts, then remove all the powerhead bolts, and it'll come right off.

Thanks,I'll use the rear hook with an engine hoist

Good job and good video but first thing I thought when you started lifting is that it's not lifting straight and he's going to bend a stud lol
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with my bench, its doesn't have the transom angle. Pulling straight on the bench is difficult.

Is it hard to replace the power head with a new one for as long as you have common sense you can do it take a video or what is something like that cost to have it done thanks again

Hi my name is Paul I was just wondering before you remove the powerhead did you have to remove the drive shaft or does that power hit come straight out from the drive shaft thanks I'll be waiting for your reply thanks again

Don't have to no, but you will have to remove the tilt pin.

Is it necessary to remove the lower unit? Would that cause the power head to not come off?
@BrandonsGarage7 жыл бұрын
No, usually I dont remove the lower first. its just a good idea to to make sure you dont damage the drive shaft splines. Also, by removing the lower first, you know that it isnt seized into the crankshaft. If its not coming, you could be pulling on an odd angle, and the studs are locking it in there. Gasket could have been glued down. Or, you dont have all the bolts/nuts off.

Brandon's Garage thanks for the reply. I have all the bolts out but it's not budging one bit. Gonna have to assess and readdress

Brandon can you tell me what the optimum cylinder pressure should be on a 1986 johnson 150 GT ? My engine has been pressure tested and the reading are from 78lbs to 87lbs. This engine does not like to idle very well and when you turn the key the starter spins the engine easily . it uses a lot of fuel as well. Should I get a ring job done to it to bring up the pressure? Thanks in advance. Joseph

While they do seem low, what the compression numbers should be was never published. Ive seen good running engines at 110psi, and good running engines at 80. So I cant give you an exact answer. Rule of thumb says all cylinders should be within 10% of each-other. I can tell you the V4's guzzle gas, and are known to have low numbers.

Do you know what that v4 powerhead weighs? Thinking of using one in a gocart..
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
about 100 pounds. in the 70's Ive seen some 115s that weigh in at 85lbs, in the 90's I think they are about 110.

@@BrandonsGarage Thanks for the quick reply, that is pretty light for a 1.6L engine. Might just buy one, convert to direct injection and add a supercharger.
