This video is perfect timing for me. I just bought a pretty clean 1975 6hp OMC and I need to go through it in a way similar to what you just did - replace broken gear shift handle, redo the rewind, water pump, carb, etc. This is a great reference/check list for me. Fortunately, I found the correct version gear shift handle. Thanks, Brandon. Well done.

Thanks for this video, I have recently inherited the exact same motor (6505R) and am diagnosing an issue with it bogging down at WOT, but will restart perfectly on the first pull and continue for another few minutes at WOT before doing the same thing. Works well at anything under WOT. Have rebuilt carb and replaced plugs so far. Am waiting for coils, cables and condensers to arrive so I can rule out that stuff. Mine also has the broken gear selector, snapped pretty much in the same place. I have drilled a small hole through it and attached a small piece of aluminum tubing to it via a makeshift "shear pin". Looks like the handle was made with chinesium or something.

Some time ago I had a 8 horsepower on my 14 foot aluminum boat. I got a three bladed propeller and moved the fuel tank in front. When the trim two notches back it took 2 seconds to accelerate to the plane and the engine accelerated higher and my new gps showed my speed went from ten to fifteen knots. I snagged a fishing line and damaged the lower end and locked it up. I sure could of used your help fixing this? Great video.

same here! Ive worked on many 6 HP's I pieced one together using many different parts from many different year 6 HPs, one of the best running engines Ive ever owned. It was hit, fell off the boat, ran over, then dragged through a dirt field for a ways. It sat for a year or 2 like that, I pulled the powerhead and got all of the sand out of it, replaced the lower pan and prop, put it back together and it ran just as perfectly before it was crashed into.

The knowledge you have is astounding..I just picked up a 1978 6 HP for 50 dollars the guy found it in a storage unit he bought.. it's very clean wish I could send you pics ..upon looking at it the outer exhaust cover had a hole in center the inner exhaust shield seemed to have blowed out with enough pressure to hit it causing it to blow a hole..I took it off to inspect the pistons just knowing it had spattered one but no both pistons look great no scarring on them or rings ordered a set of inner and outer exhaust shield and cover for it gonna try to fix it what do you think could have caused it to happen.. there's no one around here in N.C that looks at these anymore..

I know you are mostly an old outboard guy, and usually the smaller units. But, I have an old 1975 Searay SRV175 and it has an omc "stringer" electric shift lower on it. Had it for over 20 years. Nobody makes excellent videos like yours on the internet. It would be super cool, if you got one, and went through the upper and lower on film. A couple videos out there on the impeller. But, most everything is old cameras, still photography, etc. That would be a great resource for us guys that have some wrench turning ability, but haven't gotten into them too much.

Love to see a video on setting up the timing with new points and condenser. And how to reset the timing on the flywheel. Thanks
@edwardhill6945
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
Look up T Mike from Louisiana videos,( or a couple of other videos) he has a very good one showing how to check the coils, & how to set the points. You don’t need that tool that Brandon used, just an ohmmeter. Place the flywheel on, but don’t tighten it down. Turn the flywheel by hand, as soon the ohmmeter shows the circuit broken, (points have opened), the mark on the flywheel should be right between the two marks in the timing plate. If not lift off the flywheel & adjust the points. Also, don’t remove the starter, as Brandon did to get the carb off. Only undo the top two bolts, the starter can then be swung outward enough to gain access to the carb bolt…that will save you a lot of unnecessary work.

I have a 1979 that when tested with Harbor Freight compression gauge reads 40psi for both cylinders. I tested it with both spark plugs out, full throttle, and used a rope on the flywheel. Its runs and idles great. Previous owner ran straight gas for undetermined amount of time. Could this be the cause of low compression? Maybe cheapy Harbor Freight gauge is faulty? New to outboards so thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey Brandon, how are you? Can I ask a question about a 1970s 6hp Johnson outboard? So, the new pull cord is installed. And I can start the engine; but as soon as I let my hand off the gas..it doesn’t idle. It just dies. Im thinking it might be the rich/lean adjustment knob. When I screw it in completely, the fuel/air mixture is too lean (I think) and it dies. When I unscrew the brass adjustment knob counterclockwise, I can keep it running so long as I keep my hand revving the engine. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

I like the video. Do you know why these shift handles get broken ? I have a 77 6hp Johnson. Long shaft. My handle is still good. I replace the water pump.i removed the lower case where the transmission is. The shaft that changes gears looks to be a little bent. Do you think maybe this is why the handle is getting broke because the bent shaft is not letting it get changed from forward to reverse ?
@edwardhill6945
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
The handle gets broken two ways. Dumbasses try to force it into gear with the motor NOT running. If you need to do this, just pull the starter rope a bit. People lay the motor in the back of a truck during the drive to the lake- with it sitting in the shift handle.

Just cleaned and set my points and got everything together after the water pump replacement. Out of curiosity... How much water should I see at startup? I see just a hint of water, then the thermostat opens up after a minute or two and there's a bit of a steam-bath that happens...plenty of water flow at that point.. Sound normal? Engine runs great in any case. Thanks for making this video.
@BrandonsGarage
@BrandonsGarage 9 ай бұрын
Ehhh, not so much on these; at least in my experience, you don't see any difference in water flow once it's going. Sounds like the pump is just taking its sweet time. OEM pump kit? Or impeller only in origional housing? Sealant above and below the plate? Testing in large deep barrel capable or submerging above the pump?

I usually pay $100 for a non running motor less than 40 HP; usually a junky motor of higher HP can be had for $100-300. An older motor like this in good running condition will usually bring $300. Doesnt seem like much considering the cost to repair it? it isnt! This is a hobby, sometimes you can turn a profit flipping one, but the value is knowing you have a good running reliable motor when you're out on the water. Also, you can usually trade them for something; dirt bike, gokart, etc.

The only thing I can see that would stop this impeller from functioning is that the aluminum cover is worn out too much space between the blades in the cover. OMC definitely knows where to put sealant. They didn’t forget anything but you can put it wherever you want. Take note that the top of the Cover wears out and it just can’t work. You do good work but I can see you’re still learning about Johnson motors nobody knows everything.

Pulled thermostat...found bypass plugged and thermostat krusty...cleaned and re-installed thermostat cover...still no water... Not blocked...just not pumping. Pulled lower unit to find my roll pin mangled...one side bent over... I must have messed up installation. Question...would bent or damaged roll pin explain no water pumping? Could it ruin the impeller? I plan to carefully attach a drill to the shaft with some downward pressure... Wish me luck.

I have this motor on my first boat ever, a Catalina 22 sailboat: "1966 Evinrude Outboard 5 HP angler 5603". It looks very similar. I hope to do everything you just did here. Where did you get all the parts? Thank you!

75 is probably fine. I would say it worth it if you need a 6 HP outboard.

@@BrandonsGarage So far so good. Your video is invaluable for someone like me...know barely enough to be dangerous. QUESTION: I'm having trouble finding the powerhead gasket (0387321) for anything less than $60. That's a far cry from the $8.99 for two you mention in the video. Can you point me to your source? You said something about Sierra...

I have a 1973 Evinrude 6 hp motor, it runs just fine. The only problem ,I have to squeeze the bulb on the fuel line about every minute or two or it will stall out. I checked the fuel filter and 42:08 it’s clean and I’m not sure what the problem could be? Any ideas ? I’m also looking for the gearshift handle if anyone happens to have one ?

SAE bolts. Many of these were built in Peterborough, Ontario, but it was before Canada went to metric.

Where can I get parts for a decent price. I have an 81 7.5 hp I need to go thru but I dont have a lot of experience with boat motors and im have trouble finding parts. I let a friend of mine work on it and he said he got it running so I'd like to go thru it service it up real good and get it in good shape Where I don't have to worry if it'll leave me hanging somewhere.
@BrandonsGarage

Wellllll, you'll have to forgo the cost of parts at a decent price. Water pump, fuel pump, ignition parts, etc are all on the expensive side when compared to car parts from the same time. I have a 1980s 4HP and 6HP video that would suit your engine better. I also have a 7.5 I'll be diving into this summer.

One small upgrade i would suggest when tinkering with these ones: Change the top bearing lubrication tube to a see through one. Kind of a "tell tale" if the top bearing is getting lubrication. (rarely it fails, but it won't hurt to know)
@BrandonsGarage
@BrandonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, here is the issue with that- those clear tube only have about a year of life in them before they become brittle and start falling apart; even the 'fuel' clear tubing falls apart. Unless you get the Mil-spec acid line from McMaster, it all sucks.

I have used clear pneumatic tubing. Kind of a semi-hard tubing. (meant for pneumatics low pressure hydraulics. slight milky tint on it). So far no problems in about 7 years. *ToppTube PA11P40 if i remember correctly.

Absolutely. I think Brandon may have removed the powerhead for other reasons. He should have mentioned it wasn’t necessary. Just rotate the flywheel slowly by hand as you are dropping the lower end. When the pin lines up, it will come right down.
