This video is the only reason I even considered doing a full rebuild. Can't buy these old light 2 strokes anymore, so I feel it's worth a few bucks and a few hours to fix. Thanks a million for making and posting this

Great job Brandon! In my opinion this is one of the best instructional outboard teardown/rebuild videos on KZbin. I own both Johnson and mercury outboards and have watched a lot of related videos here and this is the most complete and easiest to understand and follow along with that I have seen so far.

Hi Brandon. Your videos are very helpful for me working on a complete rebuild of an Evinrude Fastwin 18HP year 1960. Here's a question. There are two guide centering pins which are tapered. They are used to center the crankcase cover on the cylinder block. On disassembly one pin remained in it's hole in the block, and the other pin remained in it's hole in the cover. I have bought new pins, but I don't feel confident punching them out due to possible damaging the cover and the block. What do you think I should do?

At exactly 5 19 when you hold up the reed plate. You can see on the plate by your thumb a channel from one side to the other. It is about 1/8 inch wide and 5 inches long. What is that for. What does it do?

Love you channel. I have a 1975 Johnson 15 hp and the engine cover seal is pretty much gone. Do you know where I could get a new one or something aftermarket to use?

Hiya Brandon watching these vids inspired me to my 1979 15hp thank you for the in depth and very clear detail and instructions and advise, now I've a question it's been bothering be as it keeps rising it face, I keep hearing that Johnson evinrude actually struggled to get 15hp out these motors untill early 80's where a series of updates or upgrades were added, 1979 they added the tuned exhaust then 81-82 the Reed plate had adjustments made to make it a true 15hp so anything before a little low on power , can you shed some light on this if its true or not I've an opportunity to pic up a 1986 15hp which I was gonna use for parts that that reason Cheers Kris

hi have a 1978 15 hp Evinrude. have a problem with the steering column. The upper mount seems to be sliding lots and I can rock the power head and steering column within the exhaust housing. it makes a click noise when fully pushed back then pulled forward. but vibrates with a rattling noise. is there a video on how to repair that? unsure if it is bolted down or how to get at that part or what parts are need for that fix. thanks for you help good videos.

Does anyone know if 1975 15hp evinrude and Johnson parts/gaskets etc are all interchangeable? I have an evinrude 15hp to rebuild and would be help to know if all parts are interchangeable for ordering new parts etc. Thanks

johnson / evinrude are the same engine. Evinrude just has fancier colors.

I don't know if I can ask such question here but I have seen that you have used a simple rubber tube to replace the grommet (Upper water tube 330426). Do you know where I could find the tube or indicate it's size?

I'm joining this thread late, but am wondering why you are tearing this powerhead down, everything looked OK inside...It is easier to drive that crankcase taper/alignment pin out before removing the crankcase bolts. It is driven out from the cylinder side toward the carburetor side of the crankcase.
@BrandonsGarage7 жыл бұрын
Just to give it new rings, gaskets, paint, seals, and to clean it up.

Brandon, when you mark the pistons, are you marking them because the pistons have to go back in the same cylinder? what if you order a new piston? or is that just to keep the rod cap with its respective rod?
@wish2fish376 жыл бұрын
I enjoy the tear down videos.Nice to see what these are made of.I have question about carbon build up on pistons.My 20hp Johnson has carbon built up on the lower part of piston, but up on the flat area it almost looks like rust on both of them.Yours have carbon and black on the tops of both.Any idea about this?

Brandon, NICE VIDEO! I have a 1980, 15 hp Evinrude which looks kind of like the Johnson. It has low compression of around 60psi but still runs. My marine shop says they won't work on it because it's not worth the labor involved. I bought the engine new in 1980 and haven't used it that much. I did however use engine starting fluid a few times to get it going. Do you think the starting fluid messed it up? Is it likely that just the reed valves are sticking and that is why compression is low? If so, do you think I still have to do a complete teardown? Can you provide a complete parts list needed to do this job so I can be sure to have everything on hand when I start?
@BrandonsGarage7 жыл бұрын
Well, dont use starting fluid- it has no oil and makes for dry starts. Low compression is probably from stuck piston rings. clean the carb and get the thing running and do a sea-foam job on it. That may clean the internals out and get it going decently.
@paladain555 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage How much seafoam do you recommend?

@BrandonsGarage6 жыл бұрын
Well, I can only guess. Carbon buildup on rings creating minimal vacuum to pull fuel until warm. Do a decarb process and see what happens?
