Hey I also have some shoe recommendations (I am from Germany but these are international): Nisolo ( for all leather goods, sandels and summer shoes are reasonable, "real shoes" are around 200$) Churchs (only via ebay otherwise $$$) RMS Williams (only via ebay, I have a pair that I am in love with the soles are actually attached via nails not just glue) Red Wing (ebay, new to expensive) Tods Ferragamo (expecially for the ballerina type shoes bought a pair via the german ebay for 30$) Aquatalia (have a line of watherproof city shoes, mine were also bought secondhand and have survived several Michigan winters) Doc Martins (!!only the Vintage ones via ebay , the ones that are still made in England are indistructable! the new ones are made in China and are Sh***) I am still a student and secondhand the most I paid for one of these brands are 60$ and are still surviving, the oldesr pairs are nearly 6 years old and were bought in Highschool. Generally avoid shoes which have " glued on soles" and the metallic dyes on shoes are known for scratching since, the metallc dye does not penetrate in the way normal dye does, it is more of a "coating".

That is heart breaking that Coach has gone down hill. I have a 14 year-old black leather coach and a 12 year-old bone leather coach and they are still in great shape. I take moderate good care of them and they still look great. I’ve noticed in the last 8 years that quality on so many goods have gone downhill. I buy quality so it lasts forever, but when they fall apart it’s discouraging to say the least. I’ve been running into a similar problem with my daughters toys.

i've had my frye boots, flats, and heels for years--- they were my mom's before she gave them to me. i also have a pair of ll bean boots from when my mom immigrated from the philippines in the 1970's and a pair of blundstones from the 80's. i'm really suprised with the coach bag-- i have a coach bag that i wear daily from my grandma that she got DECADES ago. also i swore by my bass weejuns that i wore to school daily and i still wear around campus since they're just so broken in and classic. maybe the quality of craftsmanship has dwindled over the years, sadly. i feel like you might have a better time looking for second hand leather goods because it seems to me like older stuff lasts longer. i've also noticed a dwindling in quality over levis jeans. a few brands that never seem to fail me: blundstone boots ariat boots (kinda a horseman's brand but they make really excellent quality boots and they have really cute ladie's boots as well!) dr marten's rainbow sandals (good quality flip flops) frye boots/flats ll bean ANYTHING fossil leather goods (i've had my fossil wallet since 2007. all the zips and snaps still work and it isn't too scuffed. a bit worn but what do you expect from a wallet? and i've had my sydney satchel since 2013.)

Very few brands hold up to daily wear, and the few that could handle it are cost prohibitive. I stopped buying Coach due to poor quality, and Clark’s as well, so I wasn’t surprised to see them featured here.

I'm not sure about the shoe companies but for Wilson and Coach the leather goods have warranties so if your items are showing wear and tear you can get them repaired or serviced by the company. Also with Coach and Michael Kors specifically where you buy the item from makes a big difference in the quality. I would always suggest buying those products from the companies website or retail store, NEVER from an Outlet store or a big box department store. The quality in the later stores is definitely subpar and I know MK won't service items bought from those stores. On another note for quality leather bags and backpacks I would suggest Fossil brand. Much better quality products and actually less expensive than those well know leather brands.

You should look into buying a vintage coach bag on ebay or etsy. Coach bags from the 80's and 90s were actually high quality and made to last. They will literally last forever with proper care. And there are many that have been "refurbished" on ebay and etsy. You should be able to find a great bag in pristine condition for $60-120.

Hmm. I bought some boots from Clarks maybe... uuhm, christmas 2016. I have worn them sooooo much. So effin much. They even gets used as my "oh my god, its pouring rain" shoes. Doesnt show much wear at all! The thing about them is that the leather needs some care... I wash them with a washing foam, put some leather wax on them and spray them with waterproofing spray. I just do this maybe 2, 3 tops, times a year. That is kind of the thing with leather. They will not hold up well if you don't take care of them. But if you do - they will last loooong. Maybe that is a bit of your problem with them? Or their quality is really hit or miss. I have to pairs of pumps as well, and they held up nice too. I even went up a small hill with a bit to much wine in my glass at new years, and they survived without a problem :O

The last handbag I bought was Marc Jacobs in a nude colour and it's lasted 10 years and it still looks new and I do have kids that pull on it and that small bag and another from the same place are in my collection. I completely understand where you are coming from. I have not ever had a problem from my Michael Khors purses. I have 2 big bags that are 4 years old that are super great and have stood up to a lot of travel and dogs. But I have had friends that have had horrible experiences with the brand. I am super picky when I buy though. I check all the stitching and pull the sides to insure that the stitching is sound. The Wilson Leather issue for me is pervasive, I bought a gorgeous purple motorcycle jacket and the snap came apart on the second wear. I spent a bunch of money on it and I love it so I have kept it and just don't use the snap.

I have bought several pairs of Clarks in the past, and I do not like their new shoes, they are not the same quality. I like Sofft or Born better. I used to like Skechers, the shoes I bought recently have held up well enough, but they have cheaper insoles, so they are not as comfortable as they used to be. For hand bags I like Maruca Design, and the bags are made in the US. They are made from Jacquard fabric, and will show wear over time, my first one lasted five or six years, and I have been using my second bag for two years and it still looks nice.

Try Fossil for handbags. I have two and love them. One of them I’ve had for a few months and still looks new. I looked at a lot of reviews because I wanted to buy a handbag that I could use everyday and hopefully for a few years. Some of the reviews I found were of people that had these bags for years and they were still in great shape. Also, they’re not that expensive. Coach is pricey as heck and the quality sucks!

I would try out Sam Eddelman shoes. I had a pair of ankle boots from him that lasted for over 3 years of constant use. I recently bought a new pair of the same shoe because I completely destroyed them on the cobblestones of Barcelona (they were on their last leg at that point). I have the petty boots. I highly recommend them to anyone. I also have a very expensive leather backpack form Doc Martens ($300ish). I am a student and I am rough on that backpack, and it still looks awesome. I have had it for over a year now and it still looks new. I fill it full of heavy text books everyday. It holds about 20-50 pounds during the school week. My Doc Marten boots have also held amazingly with heavy use but, I know those aren't everyone's style.

I've had good luck with Clarks but I did see some at a thrift shop where the sole stitching was coming undone even though the shoes looked new so I'd say they may be hit or miss. On that note, I never pay full price for them as I tend to buy second hand or wait for the 65% off end of season sales so I probably don't expect as much from them as I would if I'd paid full price. I've heard Coach isn't the best quality but I never had one. I've heard good things about Dooney and Burke's quality. I bought a Brahmin bag 1 1/2 years ago that I use every single day and I've been super impressed with the quality and will definitely buy that brand again. I love the look of B. Makowsky purses but the quality is terrible. Basically, I don't think there is very much that is worth full retail prices with regard to women's wear. You are so right. Just because something is expensive does not mean it's better quality.

You should try Everlane shoes, I have not been disappointed with quality, and I think the price is reasonable for the kind of quality you get. Two seasons now for my chelsea boots with only minor scuffing, babo shoes are going strong after 3 seasons (two fall seasons and a spring, going into my second spring), and they still look great. Worth it to mention that I do walk a lot but I drive to work and don't take public transport so shoes are not getting stepped on, but do get a good amount of wear.

The usual excellent presentation and this topic a good one for discussion. Dare I say it but does the country of manufacture play a significant role in quality and longevity? Showing my age here but using your shoe context as an example I had two pairs of Adidas purchased at different times in the 70's. One pair was made in France and lasted me almost ten years with regular use. The other pair was made in Germany and I got five + years from those. Admittedly you paid a premium for those, $250.00 for the pair from France which was substantial in those days but well worth it. Now I'm lucky to get a year from those that are made in China. Signs of the times unfortunately. Was Bemo busy today?

Clark's are great for comfort think the scuffs you got with flats are due too how you walk. Shoes are kind of hard too be the most minimal because shoes get worn all the wear looks decent and expected. Try hiking backpacks they tend to last longer. I also have a couch zip coin bag I have had for 11 years or so and it's beat up but holding strong. I agree things are made more cheaply these days but that's what the consumer wants. We just throw things away that often have little wear cause it doesn't look brand new it's sad

Hi Barnetta! I can totally relate with your feelings in this video! I have invested in boots and bags that didn't last me at all, although I take very good care of all my products! So now I prefer buying every 2 years cheap shoes and 1 or 2 bags that I can then maybe donate (for example your shoes are not appropriate for you to year them at your work anymore, but for people who struggle financially they are still wearable). Every product nowadays has an "expiring date" and it really makes me sad, from clothing to electronics. But I prefer donating cheap products that have been worn out rather than pieces I have invested in such as your backpack and Clarks. I actually had purchased a polo backpack which lasted me for more than eight years and after being roughly used I can say (beach, travels and every day use), the zippers only broke, but the stripes and the bottom were absolutely perfect! Hope this helps you, although polo might be too athletic for your style to work. ❤️❤️ greetings from Greece!

I have a pair of Clark’s boots that is going on 5 years! I think these brands are all hit and miss. Wilson leather is something I stopped buying many years ago, cheap crappy leathers😕 I was blessed with 2 vintage Coach purses that are amazing for their age, consider searching for one of those bags, hardware, stitching and leather is something you can’t find in their brand now. Never bought from Bass. Fossil bags are something I have and they can be an investment but the ones I have hold up to daily use. They can be a bit heavy but the leather, stitching and hardware holds up. I again have a vintage Fossil cross body that really has held up. A brand that I get my Travelers notebooks from has a tote that I have been eyeing for a long time, Chic Sparrow these are all hand made the handles are riveted which helps from the fraying because I don’t care how much you pay for leather goods it’s in the stitching and hardware that I look at. Top grain leather vs any other kind is something to know. So research the leathers they use and then inspect the hardware quality. Try finding a shoe made in USA they are worth checking out. Their is a list on internet that you can Google if US made brands, that would be a place to do some research.

Yes your so right, i think when you pare down things and buy goods that you have taken the time to chose and work hard to buy need to do exactly what they say, i buy clarks shoes and they are for work and they last me one season and i wear them to death, but they are not cheap but broad fitting so don,t have much choice in England, buy kippling bags which are so expensive for what they are but they do last but i think they have put their prices up and that really annoys me, i suppose its all trial and error maybe we need to contact these companies more often and let them know how we feel some may say its pointless but i think thats the approach and stance i am going to take from now on love Jacqueline

I still have my mom's Coach bag from the 70s. It was given to her as a gift and she always saved it for 'best' :-). While well worn, the leather only looks more mellow and the structure is fully intact. You can tell the leather and fittings used then were so much better than today. I enjoyed buying Fossil handbags until this last one. I sprung for a more expensive model -- a cross body bag -- only to find that the strap is starting to split after only 5-6 months' wear. I am so angry I am going to call the company to see what they can do. What an annoyance. The strap on the last Fossil bag I had was in better shape after five years than this one is after five months.
@KLCKLC-jd9jz6 жыл бұрын
They don't make 'em like they used to! I don't know what to recommend about Fossil. My two previous Fossil bags held up great and lasted for years. This last cross body bag has a wide, long strap that is leather on one side and fabric on the other. I noticed that the fabric side started to pill after one wearing, I swear! I thought I was imagining things, but no, it was indeed pilling. And after just a few months, I felt a roughness along the edges and thought, no this can't be splitting, but indeed it was. It keeps getting worse and worse and is starting to look like a worn out old handbag instead of a practically new one. Not sure if this is an anomaly, or what! I hope so, because I really liked the brand.

I got it free secondhand, and though it didn't last forever, I was carrying my heavy college textbooks and way too many notebooks in it 4+ days a week, for maybe 6 semesters. If I'd bought it from the company I think they would have replaced it too. It was the perfect bag, and I am not gentle at all with my stuff. I'm definitely on board with buying quality over quantity but as I see in this video so called quality companies can even be questioned. Just curious if you bought your Coach bag at a regular retail store or at an outlet. I didn't realize at first that the bags sold at the outlets are made with the intention of being sold at outlets and so are made of inferior materials and workmanship. I had assumed previously that they were just bags, etc. that had not sold in the retail stores. Even with that said the outlet prices still aren't cheap. I have bought several Coach bags from outlets and have not had any problems although I have never used them for daily use. I do have one I bought at a retail store and there is definite wear on the fabric after using it daily for quite some time.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched this video. I’ve had my Walmart purse for an entire year now at a cost of $13 and there’s not a mark on it or a thread out of place or even a fraying of the handles and it’s completely vegan… and I use it every day as it’s the only bag I have. I am surprised because I was actually on my way to Ross to buy a Tommy Hilfiger bag which usually lasts about a year, but I had to run into Walmart to get something else and came out with a much less expensive bag. And to my surprise it has held up extremely well with every day use. I am even considering buying another one that’s smaller just because this one lasted so long and so well - it’s not being retired though. I only have one large bag and sometimes it’d be nice to have a smaller one…. Someone just complimented me on it yesterday, saying what a nice bag it was. They were quite surprised when I said it was from Walmart. I’m not trying to sell anybody on Walmart I’m just very pleasantly surprised. Walmart is still a despicable company…

I hate to say it but Walmart is my go to store when I need something basic to wear. They actually have increased their quality dramatically on some items and it's usually priced at what I want to spend on something like a t-shirt or shorts or even shoes to use for camping.
@JaneDoe-ob3cu6 жыл бұрын
s.m. lambert I don’t think people should be ashamed for shopping at Walmart. There’s nothing innately wrong with Walmart or its products, the problem is with its business practices. The thing that bothers me about Walmart is that they pay their employees so low, so much so that many have to go on food stamps - a government subsidy. In the meantime, the Walton family members are millionaires and billionaires. When is enough enough for them? They won’t even have to raise their prices to pay their employees more, they would just have to accept a little bit less profit… As for buying expensive items, I would much rather buy a non-namebrand, something less expensive and put my money in the bank. I plan on having a kick-butt retirement. And if sacrificing now on “stuff” is what I have to do to have it then that’s what I do. Have values, not pretensions. Live beneath your means. Plan ahead.

I have cheap shoes from Target that are FANTASTIC and then more expensive shoes from Steve Madden that are so uncomfortable that I have had to pass them along. I would say that I will not buy from Steve Madden again. They are usually not comfortable and don't last very long. While the shoes from Target are good for me their bags last barely one season before they start to come apart and peel and I think that they are expensive for what they are. I try to only buy genuine leather bags now. I love Fossil for bags and I also try to thrift bags. I have found some good ones at TJ Maxx as well.

I would recommend, in the future, brand ratings research. Some are really good, some not really. I used to shop at Hot Topic and Spencer's and their belts are, in my opinion, complete crap. Fortunately, I'm starting to get too old for them, because my 26th birthday is next month on the 16th and I just try to focus on dressing like a dark urban style rather than looking like Marilyn Manson's kid lol. Personally, I'm really into Lugz. They're good and the price is always right as opposed to Nike, which I've grown up with, they're absolutely great, too, but too expensive. So, for minimalist street style shoes, I'm a Lugz guy.

Many so-called "vegan" fashion items, particularly shoes and bags made of "vegan leather," consist of synthetic materials, i.e. plastics - PVC, PU, and microfiber (usually spun from polyester or nylon) - which are made from petrochemicals and never biodegrade. So even when buying "vegan" products, you have to do your homework in order to find environmentally-friendly options. (I looked at the Will's Shoes website, and the first product I looked at, a pair of women's boots, has "Italian faux leather microfibre uppers.")

Barnetta Bradley Check out thefairtrade.com article on fair trade clothing! I still Google the brands they list just to check them out a little more. I mostly thrift, and I will buy non vegan items when thrifting. I know some people disagree with this because they see it as promoting non vegan brands. I don't agree because I'm not directly supporting the company, and if someone asks me about say a pair of shoes I'm wearing, I see it as an opportunity to help educate them on not only buying second hand but starting a conversation about ethical shopping. I also did not get rid of anything I already owned that wasn't vegan/ethical. To me it's just wasteful when people do that. I use everything I own until it's completely done for. I also will repair things to make them last longer, I have my own sewing machine so I can fix straps or tears. I also alter and hem clothes from the thrift stores. I know this isn't feasible for everyone, but you can also support small businesses and have your things tailored or repaired. Your things will last for years and years by taking care of them and having them repaired, that is good for the environment and your wallet since you won't be buying new things as soon as a zipper breaks or you get a hole in the sole of a shoe! Sorry this turned into a book, it's just something I've become passionate about in the last few years!

Barnetta Bradley I have not said no to leather yet, because there are happy cows out there (I pass by some on my way to work in CA, grazing on open pasture), and people are going to eat those cows and drink their milk. Using up all parts of the animal seems more low-waste to me than tossing it. In addition, cows are a domesticated animal, that wouldn't survive without humans nowadays. I'm not passionate about this, so a vegan may come in with a rebuttal, or philosophical argument, but I hope that helps in your decision making process. And I agree, second hand leather helps use it to it's fullest, too. I found a $7 basically new, kinda vintage, Fossil leather purse. Been using it daily for months with no tear, just cosmetic wear because I don't mind it so I don't prevent it. With Love! Donna Luna

Thank you so much for naming national brands you have experienced. You are absolutely right we assume some brands are better products. You have stated problems you have had that validated what I had experienced. Please do another video about "what not to buy".

I used to buy a lot of designer stuff that was such crap! Then I started buying vegan designer products. They've have been totally flogged and still look brand new - totally unbelievable. Vegan Dr Martens & Birks, Mat & Nat bags or cheaper synthetic bags.

Also most shoes aren't designed to be worn daily for 365 days no matter the cost. They need to rest and restore between wears. Birks are so hard wearing but shouldn't be worn daily. Cant recommend Dr Marten enough

I just don't like this video. When you use something every day, you cannot expect it to look brand new !!! I don't think 60$ on a pair of shoes is not "investing" and getting good quality.
