I think my main disappointment with the film was the it wasn’t a spy movie (Nat wasn’t in HER element - she was doing everything we’ve already seen her do - I thought we would get to see what we’re TOLD she can do) which you’ve said really well. The only other bone I have to pick with the film was that it felt like it was a prequel… that had a film before it - like we didn’t get to see the initial attempt to end the red room with clint - I felt like this was a missed opportunity to develop clint and nat’s friendship/ relationship or whatever. I absolutely LOVED yalena and Nats dynamic and just yalena in general and I agree that the film was visually stunning and it was very entertaining. Whoops that’s long. As Brandon brough up the power levels, it really feels like that's becoming a bigger issue in the MCU. Loki's powers and physical abilities were all over the place in his show. Winter Soldier was SO weak in the falcon and winter soldier even though he's supposed to be an experienced Deadly super soldier (even if he's trying not to kill), and they downplayed super soldiers in general. Now in Black Widow I have NO idea how she beat taskmaster in their last "fight", which lasted about 10 seconds. In their first encounter task master was easily dominating Widow, but then in the end it's the reverse. But.....why? How? Nat didn't get any stronger throughout the movie. So how did it change that much? That final fight was just so disappointing, really all of the action in the last quarter of the movie was

As Brandon is someone who meticulously crafts stories, I can't believe he gave this movie such a generous rating. While still pointing out nearly all the flaws that make this movie a 4 at best. They also liked that they didn't fight more at the end and just hugged it out because they were all victims of Harvey Weinstein Man! But it would make more sense to me that this version of Task Master would have been so much better if, after the control was broken, she had still wanted to kill the woman who used her as deliberate collateral damage and directly led to her becoming what her father turned her into. That would have been an interesting villain. They don't have to fight after that realization, the other widows could subdue her as she's choking Natasha or something to that effect, but to just immediately forgive Natasha when she was the reason her life turned out that way, doesn't work. There's no evidence of her being a forgiving or understanding person at all, because her character isn't developed at all beyond that we know she was a tool for both the good guys and bad guys at different points in her life.
@Sybato3 жыл бұрын
I was also hoping that Taskmaster would return or remain a villain because, she still lost a good portion of her life and maybe still cared that Natasha killed her dad, even though he was terrible to her. Alternatively taking her skills to become a mercenary for hire, since she might feel that she can't return to a "normal" life with her mimic ability and extensive combat training.

I feel like it's pertinent to this discussion to note that, due to the sheer amount of FX work needed for the action scenes, Marvel will often go into production before the script is even finalized. This pretty much guarantees they can never be particularly plot heavy, otherwise script revisions would obliterate production schedules. This is also partially responsible for the "rubbery" heroes, as the stakes in the rendered scenes completely dwarf the stakes of the filmed scenes, but they also can't have lasting consequences. Of course, a smaller story would have allowed them to film less effects-heavy action scenes, soooooo...

I can't agree more with Brandon Sanderson about Speed Racer. I mean, talk about set up and payoff. That opening scene and then the climactic finish to the last race. My mind is just blown every time I watch it. There is a scene where Young Speed is watching a race with his dad and even though they had seen it many times and knew the outcome they were jumping up and down cheering and I thought: "that's so dumb, who for example would ever re-watch a basketball game and get all excited like that?". But that is exactly how I feel every time watching the last race. Even though I know the outcome, I want to stand up and cheer and yell. They were able to get me (the audience) to live that same excitement in real life of something I originally thought was dumb. Crazy good what they accomplish with that movie.

I liked the idea of Alexi getting to defeat Taskmaster but I’ve got one thing: They explain that Taskmaster learns and can copy the moves of who she sees fighting or the moves of people she fights against, so she’d just be mimicking Alexi’s moves to use that against him (which she does during that scene where they do fight and that’s why she wipes the floor with him)
@erin37623 жыл бұрын
The only way to defeat Taskmaster was to outsmart her and that’s what ended up happening, and Alexi wasn’t the smartest so it makes sense that the guy who’s only mindset is “kill Captan America! Fight Captain America! We’re rivals and fought!” wouldn’t have been able to defeat someone who fights just like him with physical fighting and brute force.

After getting halfway through the podcast, I decided to just watch the Black Widow movie. My initial thoughts are: -The family dynamic was great (although the mom character seemed a little less developed than the rest) -I didn't really find there to be any great antagonists in the movie, since Taskmaster seemed like a mindless stunt-type villain with no real interesting story, and the other main villain was a guy in a suit in what was mostly an action movie -On that note, it seemed like the movie couldn't decide what it was about or the kind of movie it was supposed to be. Was it an action movie? A spy movie? A touching family story? A war crime movie? I think it introduced a lot of interesting ideas, but didn't really capitalize on any of them strongly enough.

I agree with All of Brandon's and Dan's points on black widow, including the fact that Red Guardian needed a success, but that would go against Disney's mission with the m-she-u. part of what is making the MCU hard to watch these days, is they aren't concerned with telling the best story, they have to support "the message" first and only. you can have good stories for women that also include men that aren't useless and make good decisions, but Disney doesn't seem to understand that.

I agree with the point that Marvel character's strength/power levels have become too similar and aren't clearly defined anymore. That's true, and it's sad because now, anyone can actually defeat anyone and it leads to strange situations (e.g. that ugly Child of Thanos flying out of the spinning wheel in Avengers: Infinity War and just dying like that even though he was so strong before... I think that confused a lot of viewers). I agree with most of your points, especially the Red Guardian vs Taskmaster scene that Brandon suggested. Also yes, I also think the movie would have done a lot better had it been released right after Civil War and if it had leaned further into the spy movie/Jason Bourne genre because a) a lot of recent Marvel movies feel a little too mixed up when it comes to genres and b) that's what most people were hoping for since we'd seen only snippets of Natasha's past before and those snippets caught people's attention (also the fact that the Winter Soldier had trained Black Widows in the past in the comics, so that could have been very very interesting as well). Also, the first scene with Yelena reminded me a lot of the third Bourne movie with the part that played in Morocco, so I'd hoped it would pursue that theme. When you talked about how the movie mattered to a lot of people, I agreed immediately. I went in with the expectation of it being a mediocre movie because so many people on KZbin seemed to dislike it - I hadn't seen any spoilers or the trailer or heard anyone talk about it either at that point because I also need to go into films spoiler-free - but I loved it as a stand-alone film, that wasn't bound into the whole recent storyline. (I had also deleted all memories of Infinity War and Endgame because that was all too painful to me and I didn't want to accept it.) I'm really grateful the directors paid so much attention to the family dynamic. That and Yelena were what really made the movie for me. Honestly, when I watched this movie for the first time, I identified so much with Natasha and everyone in it. Coming from a background with Russian influences, this was perfect. Super accurate, especially Alexei's dialogue but also the entire family dynamic. This was crazy. I had to show it to my family and they also agreed that this is exactly what e.g. talking to my grandpa feels like. There's so many details in this that made me howl with laughter - the fact that Natasha drives a Lada in Norway (why would you choose to drive a car that screams Russia if you want to stay hidden when the world is looking for you and you're in the hinterland of Norway?), the way Alexei insists the fuel is going to last all the way to St.Petersburg, not letting the girls be right, his obsession with Natasha being part of the Avengers but also insisting that the Western powers are evil and cannot be trusted or the way Alexei tells the story of his father peeing on his hand (I swear, I've heard multiple variations of that story from my grandpa). Even the way Natasha and Yelena interact as sisters - it's so perfect. I loved loved loved this movie. It was amazing. I suppose that many people couldn't really pick up on the Russian cultural cues and details but to me, it meant so much to see it all like this. Even though I don't really connect with that part of our family history, I felt really touched by this movie. But even so, I do agree that there are a lot of things that should've been done better - like the missing character arcs and the genre.

Personally I found my biggest issue was the fact that the daughter one survived and two was taskmaster. For the first point is that it shifts the blame from Natasha to the big bad because he was the one who turned her into a weapon but she is still alive so Natasha did not actually kill her. Two is just taskmaster is such a cool character and containing him to this movie really cuts him off so it is less that he is gender bent which also is just a weird choice but the autonomy that was taken away and then given back makes her/him have no choices and while an argument could be made that she/he goes on to be the mercenary that we already know is a bit of a leap. Not to mention that this redemption of Natasha due to taskmaster being alive and her saving her/him was just a really weak story trope to pull for this story.

I loved this movie but really only for the opening scene/credits, Yelena, and the whole family dynamic. The plot was.... Not the best. Also, something else that bothered me: the minute that the Windows were freed from mind control, they seemed happy to just give up their lives and move on... But weren't they brainwashed as children? Natasha spent years in the Red Room program and as a Black Widow without being mind controlled. Freeing them was great but I don't understand how it was such an easy fix, assuming that they've all gone through extensive brainwashing.

38:54: "Any movie is lucky if it gets one theater-wide cheer, and Endgame had like 5." Did you see the 2017 Power Rangers reboot? I went into it with really low expectations, after the mess that the earlier movies were, but the house was full of people like me who had grown up with the show, and it got 3 big cheers from the audience because *it just got so many things soooo right!* ...and yet it performed poorly at the box office and critics hated it. What went wrong?

It went wrong because it only appealed to your very specific demographic. If you didn't grow up watching Power Rangers you probably weren't going to like the movie or feel motivated to spend $10 on a ticket

I couldn't really care about Black Widow, none of the characters felt relevant in any sort of way in my opinion. Maybe if this had actually come out after Civil War it would have been better, but this movie adds nothing of value to the MCU in my opinion of course. I also don't know what makes Yelena so great? She felt childish in the worst sort of way to me. She isn't a character I would love to watch by herself. Very forgettable.

Damn you Perlmutter why did you have to prevent this movie coming out when it would've made since.

They made black widow in the MCU SOOOO tragic it is sad. This movie is good, it just feels disconnected as to where the MCU is right now. Had it been around civil war or even the winter soldier movie, it would have been great

you guys made a lot of good points. think they should of either made it after civil war or made it a genre they havent done, like a spy movie. i liked it a lot but they had a chance to make it more unique and they chose to just make another mcu movie. the bad guy was also pretty generic but that's 90% of the mcu bad guys, including thanos.

Ooh, an underrated film festival? Gentlemen Broncos. No one saw that movie. No one liked that movie, except me. I love it. It's spectacularly awkward.

Have you guys read any of John Le Carre novels? I find them really tough to get through especially the deliberately slow pacing

The Red Guardian was a big turn off for me. It's really hard for me to bond with a character who is meant to be an icon of the Soviet Union, what with the, ya know, Holodomor and all. The fact that he never seemed regretful, even for what he did to the girls was just high a hurdle to jump
