thatsoulchild there are many types of contraltos. The definition of Contralto is not that they have a masculine voice, but their passagio is in the F4/G4 region (yes similar to men before switching over to their head voice function), they sing in their chest voices higher in pitch than other female singers, their voices remain chesty, dark, smoky and rich for a long time. Sade is definitely a contralto, however she is neither the largest richest, heaviest, masculine/Androgynous voice either.It's feminine, mellow, rounded, warm, deep and smoky--never brassy or strident. Not everybody sounds like Tracy Chapman, even among contraltos it is rare to sound that close to a guy, she is clearly a dramatic. Although it's not obvious on every Contralto, it is true they have a tenor like depth and color in their low register, but they can still easily have the highs of Soprano and Mezzo-sopranos. Remember though the Contralto voice is simply the lowest, heaviest, and richest female voice, however you cut it they are still women and their vocal folds though larger than the average woman are still smaller than the typical man. Brandy actually stated she is an alto/tenor in a video interview not long ago. The typical range for a Contralto in pop is C3 to F5, very similar to the tenor range. Honestly her singing past this range is even smaller and weak. The core of any Alto singer is her chest voice. The farther they stray from it, the less comfort, and volume they have. I know what I'm talking about because l am one myself. A5 and above feels uncomfortably high. My pure head voice is really bright, thin, even crystalline compared to my dark, heavy, smoky chest voice.
