My mother used to make this only with bourbon - b/c we were in Kentucky - and she would serve it in a punch bowl pouring over the frozen slush extra bourbon and Sprite. This was served on minor holidays; i.e.: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Rose Bowl Parade, Friday, Super Bowl, etc.. Mom would also freeze the base in ice cube trays for emergency celebrations (the boss came for dinner, community pool opening, emergency divorce, out-of-town surprise company). I'm kinda glad Mom didn't know about the cranberry & lime version b/c there might not have been room in the freezer for the emergency beef roast. Thanks!

I’m surprised she used Sprite and not Ale 8

Snuck my first taste of this most famous slush when I was 10 at a polka dancing party in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. The black tea kicked in and combined with the brandy, liquid courage coursed through my veins. I spent several hours hogging the dance floor, trying to become the polka queen of Wisconsin. No one batted an eye when I passed out under a high table. Germans know how to party.

I was born in '82. I remember growing up in the 80s and early 90s seeing this at my grandma's for Christmas. Aunt, uncles, cousins, anyone of age drinking this. Jump forward a dozen or so years from then and we're into the last 2000s and it dawned on me: I remember seeing this drink but never having gotten to taste it! So of course I asked Busia (grandma in polish) if she remembers it, and of course she does. Hey, could you make that again so us grandkids who never got to try it could?! She does, and the rest is history. Man, those were good times. RIP Busia. Thank you Anders for bringing back my childhood. I'm forwarding this to all of my family so they can smile and remember how fun things were back then. Cheers, friends!

This was a staple for the holidays at my grandparents' house. Weirdly enough, I think I'm the only one who still does it at the holidays. The sweetness of the slush really balances wonderfully with the VERY SALTY mid-century snacks/nibblies/dips recipes.

My in-laws make this every year for Christmas for as long as they've been together (about 20 years now). I suspect it's something my MIL brought from her family's Christmas history as my FIL never made it before she was around; we're all natives of northern Pennsylvania, FWIW.

Holy hell.....this unlocked a memory that's been buried in my brain since my childhood. Grew up in WI, across the river from the UP. I remember my dad making this at least a dozen times.
