I swear Brandy sit between notes and has literally perfected the rasp in her tone to ride against any note. She doesn’t attempt song or notes that are out of her range... she tweaks them and that is how she is able to sing live and sound exactly the same. Im ONE OF HER BIGGEST FANS.

I agree with you about Brandy's voice. I have always liked her, but I have paid her more attention after hearing so many other vocal artists defining some runs as a "brandy run". I also have seen so many good artists talk about how much they like her voice, and how they couldn't believe such a young person (at start of her career) had such a developed voice.

I agree with everything except her voice being "hoarse". Hoarseness is a result of strain on the vocal chords-- Brandy's raspy sound is more likely the combination soft palate lift and tightening to squeeze the sound through the nasal passages. For low notes, she can sound raspy as a result of breathiness. She's like Dorinda Clark Cole or Kim Burrell. Their voices can maintain the raspy sound without fatiguing. Compare that to a young Fantasia and you'll hear the difference. Fantasia's rasp was the result of strain, which is why she had to cancel so many performances. Today, Fantasia doesn't sound as raspy and has fewer vocal issues because the strain is gone.

This is another "Mariah Carey called herself an alto" issue. People get confused - including famous singers who don't know real technical terms - alto IS not a vocal fach, it's a voice type in a choral group.
@jessicatrentwood8327 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you classify voices. Technical classification (what dileesa does) relies on how agile/comfortable/projected your voice is in a specific spectrum of notes. For that reason, both Brandy and Mariah are not altos. They can be really good at their low notes, but their voice projects and is more agile in higher ranges.

So Brandy is a Full Lyric Soprano, (after reading up, she can't be light lyric because her voice is way too mature to hav the youthful tone, example Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, etc.), but the fact that she's a Full Lyric Soprano is, (excuse my French lol), its pretty fuckin mind blowing, but yet it makes sooo much sense, because for sooo long Ive always thought she was a Lyric Contralto, but putting her against other contralto's her voice doesn't really sound androgynous, (if I spelt it right lol), at all around her lows to the forth octave, so I really really thank you Dileesa, because the way Brandy looked up to Whitney is the way I look up to her, I absolutely love this lady, granted that her voice is flawful, (Just like any singer or vocalist), but her technique isn't and she is just a master vocalist of that "3 octave" instrument of hers, (I put the quotations because ik she has more voice to show lol) but I genuinely thank you for the education and for clearing my mind, Thank You.!!

There's just no way in she's a soprano, sorry. Her tessitura sits way too low. Even lyric mezzo is honestly a stretch, but probably the best classification for her. if you want proof, check out her unreleased song "Home" with Timbaland. On the verse she is vocalizing sustained, fully projected lines around C3. Sopranos can't do that. Her voice isn't unrealized, it's fully matured and mastered. She simply doesn't have the top soprano notes you think she has because you're misclassifying her voice.

Dileesa im usually with you...but i think some other things should be factored into your analysis,and not just where the recordings of their voice may be sitting. Brandy's weight and color are important...i think that puts her in the Mezzo category for sure. Bc theirs a difference between the following voices that would thus all sing soprano according to how your analyzing....brandy, then clearly monica, beyonce, kelly rowland...keke palmer, ledisi. And i think this is where the classical and traditional/"modern" voice classifications may differ. To me, The soprano section starts with Kelly. Not that the ladies before cant give you soprano notes. I think we have to consider that a great singer can give you many different sounds. I can elaborate, but only if you care to hear that lol.

Ovan61 she's a lyric soprano. Her voice is way too light to be any sort of mezzo.
@Ovan616 жыл бұрын
Azeryahu Ben-Iramihu But that is one of the qualities of a dugazon mezzosoprano, they voice are lighter than other mezzosoprano, like Kelly Rowland. Dugazon mezzosopranos have light warm voices, they are the mezzo version of the soubrette soprano.
@brandonjohnson19986 жыл бұрын
Ovan61 I know what people think that is. It is a rare hybrid and Brandy's voice isn't hybrid. Her voice pops from middle C upwards like any other soprano. People are confused by her vocal fach because she has an extended lower extension and that is only because she learned how to push the air out in a controlled manner down there but as it was pointed out many times, her lower notes do not project.
@brandonjohnson19986 жыл бұрын
Kelly Rowland isn't a mezzo either. Beyonce is a mezzo. A coloratura to be exact.
@Ovan616 жыл бұрын
Azeryahu Ben-Iramihu When you refer to her low notes, are you referring to notes lower than G3, because notes lower than G3 is not apart of a natural mezzosoprano range and so those note won't project well, notes beyond a G3 belongs to contralto. That's why opera arias for mezzosoprano aren't composed beyond a G3. In recitals a mezzosoprano opera singer may go lower than a G3, but not in a opera role.

Hi Dilessa! not sure if you remember me... but I asked you a question a while back about a what you truly think about Brandy's voice! I totally agree with your analysis, I do believe that her voice is powerful and small at the same time. Brandy has an amazing voice however I think that she's doing too much at times. For example - I watched a live performance off her singing I Wanna Be Down at the BET Hip Hop Awards and she was not in tone at all. Considering she had a high pitch singing voice back in '95, she sounded like Monica/Whitney Houston. When I watch other performances, all she does is just RUNS. We get it you can sing Brandy, but I wanna hear you sing the lyrics! I strongly believe that nowadays she's trying to copy Whitney Houston too much. Brandy was the best when she produced songs like I Wanna Be Down, Never Say Never and especially Brokenhearted.
@RahLeone10 жыл бұрын
Your comment about her trying to copy Whitney now a days could not be further from the truth. And I say this respectively. Hear me out Back in the 90's and especially on her first album the Whitney influence/vocal style was much more apparent. By the time never say never came around brandy began creating her own unique sound By her third album "full Moon" she had her OWN sound in full effect. She was doing creative runs that were all her style, her tone and vibrato and sound had changed drastically from the 90's. No one in the industry layers their backing vocals and harmonies the way brandy does but many imitate. That is why Stacey Barth started the title vocal bible because of the vocals in full Moon. Not to say she got rid of the Whitney influence but she certainly created her very own sound. The same sound that she created with darkchild is the same sound he later gave to several other girl groups and solo artists. But still none sound like brandy. She has her own sound. When brandy dropped her aphrodisiac album in 2005 it inspired many artists. Rihannas entire 'good girl gone bad' album was inspired by brandys aphrodisiac album she said it herself. Coldplay also said brandys harmonies and backing vocals inspired one of their albums. When Beyonce discussed her itunes playlist she mentioned Brady's song 'focus' from aphrodisiac noting how much she loved the harmonies and backing vocals Her 2008 album human had a different sound then all the others. Actually all her albums sound so different from one another because she constantly remains innovative. Her voice has gotten better and better over the years. Whitney had an amazing tone, a big sounding voice when she projected, a beautiful head voice and nice vibrato and gravy definitely was most inspired by her but if u really listen to brandy and also to Whitney sings you will see brandy has made her own sound. If I had to suggest an album to prove this point the best one is full Moon. She made a vocal statement with that album. Brandy is actually more creative musically than Whitney was. That's why brandy is my favorite vocalist. Her tone is one of the most unique in the industry, her creative runs, vibrato, range etc And running is brandy's style we know she can hold notes but she chooses to run. No different then jazmine Sullivan or kim Burrell it's her style that she prefers. The truth is brandy ids capable of doing any run because we've seen in acapella videos on KZbin how much ability she has but she chooses to be very creative in her running. U rarely hear her continue one run for ever like Kim Burrell may do. Brandy thinks carefully about how she executes those runs but if u want a performance with some longer sustained notes then her 'without you' performance at the BET awards is a good start. She still runs but you definitely hear notes held longer. There's also a rehearsal video of the same performance so the vocals in each are a little different. Also she recently covered coldplays song 'magic' and that does not have as many runs. and there are so many other songs in her discography that are actually pretty simple as far as mass vocals go. Artists like, Chris Brown, tank, Solange, India Arie, Kierra sheard, Kim Burrel, Dawn Richards, Beyonce, Rihanna, Teyana Taylor, and countless other vocalists have praised Brady's vocals. At least 4 of these artist I mentioned have said brandy is either one of the greatest or that she is the greatest female vocalist. Her peers respect her because she had influenced so many of then with her sound. Is way more to her music than most people even hear. That's why some say brandy is a singer's singer. The industry resources her vocally and mutt because she is a Whitney copy.
@RahLeone10 жыл бұрын
That last line was supposed to say "the industry resources brandy vocally but not because she is a Whitney copy but because they recognize how influential her sound has actually been." And earlier in the post u should have said "if you listen to Whitney songs and then brandy songs sociality brandy songs from Full moon or after you will notice some huge difference in their vocal styles and in their music"
@RahLeone10 жыл бұрын
The other point I forgot to make is that I don't really remember at this moment how her pitch was for the 'I wanna be down' performance but if u check her live performances since 2008 during the human era up until today she is almost always in point with the vocals/pitch etc. Maybe she had some nerves or issues hearing herself or the track that day. Being a singer myself those kind of things happen from time to time but her pitch is very good almost every other performance and if she is pitchy is usually only a note or two out of a whole song. Like when her and Monica did 'it all belongs to me' live sometimes brandy was a little pitchy in the beginning due to nerves and the fact that her part was so low. But she recovered quickly

Rasheem Alavache Hi Rasheem! I do agree with what you say and I appreciate your response. We can agree to disagree, I'm not trying to start a war in any way! (laughs) I'll just explain briefly about my comment on her performance last year. What I was trying to say was... Her voice sounds too deep considering I Wanna Be Down has recorded in a higher register. If you hear the background vocals carefully, she doesn't match the tone. Since I Wanna Be Down was recorded in '94 I believe... Her voice has definitely changed in twenty years. But if a song is recorded/sung in a higher tone, she should remain to the original version as much as she can. In a period of twenty years - her voice has changed drastically and I do believe she can't hit those high notes she did back when she was 15. (If you watch the performance compared to live ones back in 94/95, she sounds just flawless, especially when she sings Brokenhearted with Wanya Morris on the Oprah show. Check it out if you haven't watched it!) Now a response to your comment: I watched the Without You performance when it first aired on BET and I do agree, it was breath-taking. I'm not doubting her ability to sing in any way or form, she's an amazing singer and she could out-sing me any day! Her latest album Two Eleven, I consider as one of her stronger albums compared to Human/Full Moon. But once she released Magic, I was once again disappointed. It just doesn't sound like Brandy song at all. I use to be a huge Brandy fan myself if I didn't state before. I own all of her albums, including the 2005 Greatest Hits album. Even if I don't love her albums Full Moon/Aphrodisiac, I still appreciate her as an amazing artist! I love Brandy and I will always buy her albums, but her music will never be amazing as it was back when she released Brandy/Never Say Never in the 90's (I may seem biased, but I do love my 90's R&B music.)

I definitely agree she sounds different now than at 14. She had grown up her voice was younger/brighter then and now it's a little bit of a darker tone but still very light and agile The performance for I wanna be down was still performed in the same key as when she was 14 but with vocals of a grown mature woman so I wouldn't expect it to sound exactly like the original. It's crazy because I literally hated magic wen I first heard her sing it I said the same thing you did it just didn't sound like brandy to me. But it was her take on the song and after a couple weeks wen I listened again and really payed attention to the vocals on the song I had to change my mind. Brandy has no bounds musically and that's what I love about her. I'm a 90s baby so its something nostalgic about her two 90s albums. Never say never was the most well put together of all her albums in my opinion. She explored so many styles on that album. Even tho never say never is so epic it's not my personal favorite anymore because her voice had not matured yet. Her vocals just got better as time went on. Brandy said full moon was all about the sound and making sure it was perfect and she did that. Created a great sound that she called futuristic r&b. Vocally it is better than the work before it not because of high notes but because of the way she used her instrument on that album. Plus she hit many high notes on this album. But even on full moon she sounded somewhat young. It wasn't until aphrodisiac that her full mature adult voice had come in. So I understand why u may not like full moon and human (by the way human her tone was different then every other album. A very high tone for her Jews husky she hit fast notes on these songs) and Afro albums because most ppl who remember brandy from the 90s (and especially the ones who haven't followed her career as much since) say they want the 90's brandy back. But truthfully vocally she truly knows how to use her instrument even better since full moon and after. I have seen the brokenhearted performance so I get what your saying. Even the biggest brandy fans sometimes complain about her not using her upper register enough. But she can definitely hit those notes still. When she did a change is gonna come in her bathroom her control is so amazing and that note she hits at the end was up there. There are songs I can show u where she hits notes just as high as wen she was a child. One thing I know is that brandy herself says she prefers to sing in her lower to mid register. Which is why she doesn't always sing as high. She performed in Baltimore in 2014 for the African festival. If you haven't seen that one it's a great performance my favorite one of them all. The entire show her vocals were amazing and she performed so many old songs and news ones and put new spins on them. She was hitting all the notes that day even higher then the original songs. Brandy was so confident as a kid which also had alot to do with her openly hitting the high notes on stage more often. She was not afraid. But later on she developed horrible stage fright and then her voice was changing through the whole never say never era. She talks about it. It took her some time to get comfortable performing again. I sing and I know wen I'm nervous the notes don't always come out as good. Nerves can cause you're whole mouth/throat to dry out and leave u gasping to hit notes. Also overtime due to maturity and having a baby her tone did get a little more dark/lower but she still has those high notes. Hopefully in the future she will continue to become more fearless and go for those money notes more often because so may people feel the sane way you do and really do think she is not capable of hitting the same notes now. Brandy is my favorite artist. I have done more covers of of her songs than anyone else on KZbin and iced heard all her albums and jUst about all her unreleased songs (She has well over 100 unreleased tracks out there) Some of the unreleased music us the best. Song like freedom or gonna find my love (great high notes in this one) She hits notes it all the time in the studio and some live or in bathroom performances. That's where I get frustrated as a fan of her. I want her to not only sure us she has great control, technique, vibrato, harmonies etc but I also don't want her to stay in one register too often because people forget what she can really do And please don't think of this as a back and forth argument (not saying u see it that way) because i'm enjoying your opinion and its great to see we can gave a discussion and even agree to disagree but in a cordial way I tend to write too much lol I'm kinda passionate about Brandy!

A soprano? O_O I really don't think Brandy is a soprano lol a mezzo maybe. Her tessitura doesn't seem to be in the soprano range. I thought she was a lyric mezzo.
@johnnycuff46479 жыл бұрын
lyric soprano really? i mean she sounds nothing like ariana or tori kelly. i agree her belting isn't great but her signature is her rich lower register.
@humbled92_Mister8 жыл бұрын
Tori and Ariana are light lyric sopranos.
@tekenaabere8 жыл бұрын
lol that was the point. it was said that brandy is a lyric soprano, and he is saying but she sounds nothing like tori or ariana who are lyric sopranos.
@humbled92_Mister8 жыл бұрын
Tekena Abere once again, tori and Ariana are LIGHT lyric sopranos. There's a difference between a light lyric soprano and a lyric soprano. Light lyric sopranos have youthful light and bright voices vs lyric sopranos who have a more mature lyric voice in comparison to light lyrics.

Brandy isn't a soprano she is lyric mezzo with a developed lower register and great agility but she ain't nobody's soprano lol. She doesn't even sing in the soprano tessitura & rarely ever songs above F5 which is where soprano voices are mostly comfortable
@thatsoulkidbtj7 жыл бұрын
RyderC Daniels you have to consider how she would perform vocally in a classical setting. If she were to sing opera, she wouldn't be a mezzo. She would be a soprano
@rydercdaniels44757 жыл бұрын
thatsoulchild No she wouldn't, her tessitura is within the mezzo range, plus the color/weight of her voice SCREAMS MEZZO. Plus no soprano has that much ease and comfort in the lower register that Brandy has (unless you're Aretha Franklin lol). Also it's like u said she doesn't and has never sang within the soprano tessitura & her main strengths are her lower register, mid belts, riffs/runs & that's about it. She rarely ever uses head voice and barely every sings upper belts and when every she does she doesn't stay up there, she quickly "hits it" and then quickly riffs back down because she isn't comfortable up there.
@thatsoulkidbtj7 жыл бұрын
RyderC Daniels But you're basing this off of her contemporary singing. If she were to sing opera or classical it's a different story. She wouldn't be a mezzo and that's the whole idea of the vocal fach. This is why many find it pointless to even classify contemporary singers.
@rydercdaniels44757 жыл бұрын
thatsoulchild that makes no sense to say that she would be singing as a soprano in opera when her vocal physiology is that of a mezzo's tessitura. That's like saying a contemporary bass-singer would be singing as a Tenor in Opera.
@thatsoulkidbtj7 жыл бұрын
RyderC Daniels Opera singers use their head voices predominately if not all the time. Brandy would not be able to hit those lower notes in her head voice or even in mixed because it simply is not her fach. She has hit an E6 before on stage which is clearly higher than a D6. She does indeed have the tessitura of a Lyric Soprano and even if she weren't truly comfortable with that D6 it simply speaks on her lack of classical training. Again, these are contemporary voices. She has expressed her being comfortable in her lower range and that is simply because it doesn't take much effort for her down there but even then you can still tell the sound produced is not really full.
